What do you think about mythos
#45245 - 01/23/08 11:10 PM

Mythos

Mythos is an online, action role-playing game that is free to download and free to play. Set in the land of Uld – a fantasy
world arising from the ashes of an epoch-long war of darkness – players assume the roles of fantasy heroes as they
explore, adventure, and quest through entirely randomized dungeons and environments. With an elegant point-and-click
interface and an accessible “isometric” perspective, Mythos is poised to have near-universal appeal. The game
allows thousands of players to interact within the same world while using mostly “Instanced” dungeons to create unique
gaming experiences suited for both solo and group-minded players.

As players journey into Mythos’ ever-expanding universe, they select one of three races (Human, Elves, or Gremlins)
and opt to play as a particular character class using a huge variety of skills and items. Through heroic quests players
search for gold, gems, armor, and weapons, while unlocking the secrets of Uld. Mythos presents a constantly expanding, continuously updated world where something new lurks around every corner.

Mythos is an online role-playing game developed by Flagship Seattle, a subsidiary of Flagship Studios. Mythos is currently exercising the online technology and services behind the multiplayer component of the highly-anticipated action
role-playing game Hellgate: London. Mythos will be digitally distributed in North America and Europe in 2007 by Ping0.
HanbitSoft, Flagship Studios’ partner in Ping0, will be responsible for distributing Mythos in Asia.

For more information, head to the official Mythos website at www.mythos.com.

FAMILAR ANYONE?????
They are even advertising how you can play for 10-15 mins and leave. Christ....

I think it's against the rules to post like this, sorry:

Quote:

12. No “Compare and Contrast” threads.

The official forums are intended solely for discussion of the Dungeon Runners. Any thread whose primary purpose is the discussion of another game (whether published by NCsoft or not) will be removed, whether it is in the context of “comparing” it to Dungeon Runners or not. Incidental comparisons will arise from time to time. This is understood and acceptable. However, it is when a thread becomes primarily about such comparisons that the thread will be removed.

That being said, Mythos has been around for a little while. It was started as a way to test the network for Hellgate: London and grew into a sustainable game and potential source of revenue. Mythos is made by the actual developers of Diablo (ex-Blizzard employees that split off to form what is now known as Flagship Studios). I'm part of the Mythos beta and, while I think it's an ok game, I also feel that it is exactly like Diablo, but with updated graphics. Even some of the mobs are the same:

Recognize these impish characters from D2?
or these?

I have a whole article I'm going to write on D3, I mean Mythos, so I'll save further comments for that.

Mythos, if I am not mistaken, is the spiritual sequel to Fate. Personally, I found Fate quite a nice game, and I look forward to see how Mythos will do.

Mythos is an okay game, I find dungeon runners more intense since your using a lot more skills vs more enemies.

Legendrunner, that pic is from the Alpha, I believe. If you look at my first two links, you'll see it is much nicer looking, both in art and the UI.

I firmly believe the two big players in this genre (f2p online hack-n-slash) will be DR and Mythos. As I mentioned earlier, Mythos is literally D3. Because of that, they have a built in fan base that is huge. Personally, I like DR better, but that's me. Mythos will be f2p, btw (it is now, but it's still in beta), but they will have some sort of cash mall/microtransaction system revenue model, I believe.

Its all about which is more fun though, killing screenfulls of enemies really fast is far more fun than pretty graphics. Thats kinda one problem with mythos, lack of enemies since they have so many graphical effects going on at once. Cant even party because it gets so laggy. I mean is dungeon runners gonna be able to do things like "raid boss" as it said it would?

I'm not ready to spill the beans yet, but we've licensed a very capable third-party engine. It's been in tons of games and supports several platforms.

As for maintaining the perfomance of things... We will not be degrading the ability of the game to run on your machines.

On the contrary, this new engine is considerably more efficient than our inherited custom engine. We will likely be able to provide better framerates than we do now.

Not to mention optional shadow support...

oooooooooh, DR is going to get a graphics boost? That sounds ace! I think the majority of DR players will stick with DR since it's just so much fun to play and has been getting very good updates to the game.
I imagine that DR will have a lot more content etc than Mythos when that is released too.

Re: What do you think about mythos

In regards to Mythos' graphics, specifically, I both like and dislike them. I'll explain:

Pros:
  • "Style" - the overall cohesive look and feel of the game. I like it just fine. It's definitely "cartoony", much like DR.
  • "ooh, shiny!" - From a technical perspective, there's a lot of "shiny" due to the use of particle effects and shader technology. Pretty....

Cons:

  • Camera - the only playable camera mode is from an isometric view. That was fine in Diablo, but in this day and age, I expect a bit more camera control (like what can be found in DR). Also, due to the camera angle, one must pan the camera pretty far out for the game to be playable, thereby negating much of the "ooh, shiny!". Personally, I prefer this angle to this angle . *
  • "Performance" - Yes, I know the game is in beta, but for a game that is essentially an isometric single player (conceptually, it's the same as DR - solo or group, but nobody groups), performance isn't that great, especially with all the eye candy turned on. It needs some tweaking, after all, this isn't LotR... Performance in groups is flat out awful due (at least in part) to all the effects going off, btw.
  • "The world" - most of the nice graphical effects are saved for the character and NPC models, the maps--in general--are very plain and non-interactive.Here are some examples of outdoor maps: Map1 and Map2
  • Playable/Viewable area of maps - simply put, you can't see all of the screen while in dungeons. Having a widescreen monitor gives you a little more playable area, but not that much, really. In outdoor instances, instead of using x-ray vision, objects are simply highlighted in white (through trees, for example). Here are examples of an indoor map at two different resolutions: standard aspect ratio vs. widescreen. This probably wouldn't be an issue if one were able to change the camera.
* Please note, there is a "vanity" mode that lets you see your character in all it's shiny glory, but you can't move in this mode (see the "ooh, shiny!" pic linked above.

On a completely separate note, just like Diablo, Mythos is click-to-move only. There's no WASD, which is an absolute killer for me, personally.

True and nice comparsion, but you miss alot of stuffs in your pro :P
please allow me to add a few
- the sound effect in Mythos are super. The kaboom of your fire dart sounds awesome, enemy death and big units of enemy goes splat that make your heart race and make you wonder "wow did i just freaking did that?" lol
- there are unlimited of crazy map for you to get into (epic map that you could use even its 10 lvl above ya for more challenge and with the right build any thing is possible. That of course it require player skill and the right build to do so.
- maps you re-visit are never the same, they got this system where it will randomize your dungeon. Think they called it random dungeon lol
- the viewing and angel are fine as its. You won't fumble around with your view when the fight get to intense. Its beautiful made.

Cons:
- lack of storyline (beta i guess? only given a small amount for us to taste)
- lack of cutescene which make the game 100x better. D3? naww lol
- PVP - they said it will add soon, and i'm a big fan of PVP as many of u already know from my DR past PVP advocated suggestions.

thats pretty much it, i only test the game for couple of day and i already discovery my ulimate mage build. Just like I did to my Mage in DR :P

My pros and cons were specific to the graphics only, which is why I said "In regards to Mythos' graphics, specifically...".

As to your comments, however:

Sounds - the sounds are nice

Maps - yes, they have random maps, but just like in DR, they're based off a finite number of tilesets (caves, ruins, outdoors, etc...) So, infinite map layouts based on a limited number of dungeon "types".

Camera - if you like isometric, fine. Personally, I like having options...

Story - as far as I'm concerned, stories should be told through quests and quest arcs. Otherwise, one is simply watching a story rather than participating in it.

Cutscenes - meh.. I'd rather play the game than watch it...This is a hack-n-slash, after all...

PVP - PVP would be nice. I like having options...

My bad on the graphic part :P

well have you get the chance to do this quest call "The Faceless One?" The guard that once protect the city went to join the Dark Side, his betrayal lead me to his assassination hired by his former boss.
It was a bit of disappointing when I slaughter my way to him, but to my dismay I didnt receive a single dialogue or cut-scene from that guard, because I was hoping to see his "transformation" and hoping he would be a tougher and bigger mob instead just a normal every day boss tehe. So yea a cool cut-scene would rox, not only that it give player some laid back for all their work and get to enjoy some eye candy effect lol. This ultimately would draw in tons and tons of players. I have no doubt on that, after all its close to being the next D3 but in multi-player baby!

I'm kinda scared... Is this saying that my celeron isn't going to like running DR by the end of the year? Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but I've been saving my nickels for a new PC - I'm just not there yet! Enlighten me guys.

What else do you expect? The minimum requirements for DR are nearly classified as.. A computer. Nothing more. We cant expect DR to be able to run on a random computer with the age of 20 in 2008 anymore. Its 2008 remember

At the moment its a rather low requirement though, and it is possible to get it even lower by changing how they render certain objects. Like if they render fireballs as a simple sprites then the computer doesnt need to render anything other than a picture. If they make it a ball of fire with alpha and all those pretty things then computer has to process all of that. This goes with a lot of other things

Teclis, unless your wife is the geek in the family, you can always start having "mysterious" hard drive and system issues (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) for instance, by using the task scheduler to make things start happening "by themselves."

When I recently decided I needed a new 22-inch monitor - coincidentally, one of my two 17-inchers started having "color and brightness issues" and needed replacing.

Once I got it home and connected she said "omg, how did you stand that tiny one so long?"

FYI, in regards to Mythos' revenue model, it will be F2P/RMT. Per Max Schaefer, Executive Producer of Mythos:

I'll address this since there is some confusion. To make Mythos all it should be, obviously we have to make some money. So we are creating a second currency (let's call it Ingots until we think of something better) that will be purchased with real money. These Ingots will let you buy various enhancements in game. Our plans will be guided by a couple important principles:

1) The Ingots will be freely tradable once they are purchased. So if a non-paying player finds a killer item, he can "trade" it to a paying customer for Ingots. This will result in a mixed economy where everything is available to everyone.

2) We don't want to simply sell the best loot. There will not be a vendor with the best arrmor or swords for the richest players. Instead, we will sell things that only enhance your ability to go out and find the loot yourself. Additionally the Ingots will buy cosmetic items like crazy hairstyles, account enhancements, guild items, and that sort of thing. We do NOT want to create a split community between haves and have-nots. Players unable to spend real money will simply have to put more time into it, but will be able to have just as powerful a character as a paying customer.

Mythos is a global project, and will release in Asia separately from the US/Europe commercialization date (undetermined at this point). For those of you familiar with the Asian gaming community, the Cash Shop (or RMT for "real money transactions") model is now standard. Most games operate that way. We do not have the time, money, or staff to create multiple versions of Mythos that work on different business models (yet!) and we think it's a great model that lets you pay if you want to, but also allows players to succeed without any financial committment at all.

We realize there are pluses and minuses for every model and that not everyone will be satisfied no matter what we do. Not everyone can commit to a monthly subscription. And a box product doesn't allow continued development, doesn't work in Asia, and requires a substantial up-front payment. So this model lets EVERYONE IN THE WORLD play Mythos, and offers enhancements for those who don't have as much time to invest and can afford to pay. No solution will make everyone happy, and we're doing our best to strike the best balance we can.

That being said, we still welcome your input. Making the customer happy is what we're all about.

Also, here's an excerpt from an interview at Stropp's World:

Quote:

Stropp: It’s been previously announced that Mythos will be free to play. Can you tell us what revenue model you will be using? What incentives will there be for players to pay extra?

Max: We will be using an RMT model. Our goal is to provide a wonderful, robust free experience, but offer attractive options for people who are willing to pay to get extra luxuries, or enhance their adventuring. We don’t want to simply sell the best items - even paying players will have to go kill monsters to find the best loot. Also, we plan to let players trade the in-game cash currency for items with non-paying players. This way, even the cash items will be available to free players, and we’ll avoid splitting the community into the haves and have-nots.

Stropp: There’s been quite a lot of discussion around the MMO blogging community recently about RMT. How do you intend to deal with third party gold and item sellers?

Max: It’s very difficult to stop item selling. Instead, we are investigating actually allowing players to sell items though a secure in-game marketplace rather than resorting to Ebay. We don’t think gold farming will be a huge issue in Mythos, however, since the RMT currency cannot be farmed, and the in-game gold doesn’t buy you everything you need. Nevertheless, we stop gold farming whenever we can.

Well, I gave it a shot, and surprisingly I like Mythos. It has a very Diablo like feel...all the controls are earily familiar. The fact that they have a quest centered xp mechanism really takes away the grind for me.

For an unfinished game, it feels finished. And while there isn't an overarching world story, there easily could be one involving the Faceless One.

Game play wise is pretty easy. Three modes: standard, elite and hardcore. You can even mix them up and go elite hardcore. I went with the option of elite (harder bosses, a little bit harder game) and standard (if you die, you don't die forever). So far, I've died 4 times to two difficult bosses, but it's been easy sailing other than that.

I like DR quite a bit for its humor, ease of getting into it, but Mythos (even as incomplete as it is) seems to be a more complicated/deeper game. And I like the quest based xp advancement (though right now, the game doesn't have content past level 25, so everyone higher than that grinds it out). Strangely, I like Mythos *better* than Hellgate: London, the game it was supposed to be a test for.

As for DR and Mythos - it's a toss up, with an edge going to DR for now. Bottom line: I *pay* for DR, not sure if I'd do the same for Mythos.

Well, it basically is Diablo 3/Fate 2.

Agree. Then again, they have the advantage of having dev staff that created the monster hit Diablo and they've essentially created an updated version of that... While the dev team is small, they've put money into it whereas the DR team didn't have funding, was experimenting with a new revenue model and had to invent a game out of inefficient inherited code. Now that DR has some funding and some new designers, I'm really anxious to see what they come up with, especially in regards to the newly licensed engine!

I agree with all of these points.

Personally, I don't care for the direction of their proposed revenue model, although I can see how it's the right choice for an Asian audience that is used to item shop/cash mall games.
