MyDungeonRunner google gadget
#45095 - 01/22/08 01:28 AM |
Display your character in a widget on your blog (or where ever). Check it out here. I'm incompetent when it comes to formatting, etc... so I am just posting this as an invitation to take that and make it look nice. ![]() Gadgets are what Google calls 'widgets' - little boxes of content you can put on a start page or in a blog side-bar, etc., with just one line of code (as opposed to needing your own server and writing php code to do it). So, if you have talent for making things look nice... knock yourself out. -------------------- Add MyDungeonRunner to your blog. |

MyDungeonRunner update I went ahead and finished the stats tab, made it look less ugly, and populated the skills page. I think it looks a lot better. [image]http://hosting.gmodules.com/ig/gadgets/file/116650004683272111876/dr_screen.png[/image] The background image is a user-setting, too, so you can set that to any URL - though you might have to manually resize it to get the right fit. Anyway... now the hard part really is done, so anyone interested in modifying that shouldn't find it too difficult. -------------------- Add MyDungeonRunner to your blog. |

Quote: Thanks! The MyDungeonRunner gadget is ready for prime-time, I think, should anyone want to display their character on their blog or the like (anywhere you can insert a line of javascript). I just got the Equipment tab in with popup-tooltips for the item details... [image]http://mythicalblog.com/dungeonrunners/my_dr_items.png[/image] ...so that's made me want the same for skill descriptions, while at the same time, the skill links have made me want the same for items. Or for that matter, I think it'd be nice if the character's name linked to a web-page character viewer too - I just haven't wanted to be so presumptuous as to just do it. Are wiki's able to read, format, and display data from an XML or JSON response to a server query (i.e. for data that users can maintain (wiki-like) in the db), or are they still just pretty much doing the web page thing? If no such thing exists already, I'd bet a wiki-like (user-maintained) web-accessible database would be just the sort of project to put a one-man company with a name like 'Three Moons Software" on the road to success (meaning: bought by Google, Yahoo, or MicroSoft - whichever one of them wins the "who can carry the most money to my bank"-contest). Sure hope someone out there is buyin' that, cause it's definitely better than me making it (at least from my perspective). Really looking forward to guild support and implementing a social network tab to that thing. ![]() Thanks so much for going this route with providing access to the data. I hit a different site earlier that wanted me to sign-up just to view someone else's character on their website, and it reminded me how much I hate people. Oh, and also that this is very nice. -------------------- Add MyDungeonRunner to your blog. |

Quote: First off: Yes it would be possible to make a wiki page which can pull the xml off the xml feed and transfer it to a viewer, thingy, if thats what you mean. Tho that would require some coding. Secondly: Yes there already is a wiki-like, user maintained, web-accessible database, called www.thetownstons.com , It is a wiki, its user maintained, and its web accessable. Its a database but just not possible to access the database itself, but the pages that view that info from the databases. Edited by Legendrunner (01/31/08 10:16 AM) |

Quote: I realize that my aunt could be my uncle, because there's a Swedish clinic specializing in gender reassignment procedures... but... Well, you know. I was more asking if that were functionality that wiki software already provided. I understand that such a thing could be coded, but I'm a big fan of other people already having done the work to create the things that I want. A huge fan of that. Quote: Right, but it's the direct access to the data that I'm after. (The wiki then using the data in that same format to display it, itself just logically follows from that). To clarify: Lots of cool things are possible due to the DR character data being available as raw XML, rather that there just being a webpage that displays DR characters. Likewise, lots of cool things would be possible if wiki data were available as raw XML, rather that there just being a webpage that displays the data. (That is - not just in the case of thetownstons.com DR wiki, but in all cases.) I suspect what I am describing is a sort of "next gen wiki", which hasn't been invented yet. But as an example of how such a thing would be more useful: if I could access the townstons' skill data as XML, I could display it in pop-ups on the character viewer. Currently, in order to do that, I'd have to duplicate the data (and duplicate the effort required to maintain it). A much better solution would be for users to support their local wiki (whatever the subject), for their local wiki to continue displaying its data on web pages as it does now, but for it also to provide the data in XML format so as to eliminate error-prone duplication of data and effort every time some new web-app wants to display the same info. If someone wants to volunteer to do a mess of data-entry for DR skills, it'd be a more efficient use of their time if their work went toward supporting a resource that lots of different applications could tap: from wiki web pages, to character-sheet viewers, to desktop widgets, etc. If someone offered to do data-entry for all the skills data I want (for my Google gadget), I'd ask them to spend that time on thetownstons.com instead, where it'll benefit more people. But a different sort of approach to all this could be even more beneficial than that - at least from my perspective. -------------------- Add MyDungeonRunner to your blog. |
