what gear do you rpefer?
#44652 - 01/17/08 02:16 PM

Was wondering what gear everyone prefers to use? It seems that sissi's staff has become the staff for all mages to have even tho I'll never use a 2h. I love Wrings, Deaths gear, and a good shield even shardian works well for a mage cause of the nice def and end you get. But was wondering what RB's everyone else likes? Also what's a good rb neck piece for mage?

Picking on someone's spelling on the forums can be a dicey thing. Some people can't spell or are lazy, but others don't use English as a native language. How good would your post be if you had to post in Korean or Polish? Be respectful.

And besides, "laugh out loud" is spelled LOL!

I would like to point out you are not using correct grammar either. Let me modify it for you.

Laughs out loud "what gear do you rpefer" it's prefer! Learn English.

(You should probably use LOL in the above, rather. I know that LOL stands for "Laugh Out Loud", but when you actually write it out in full you may need to make "Laugh" a verb. I may be wrong here, however, since grammar is not my strong point)

Hey, even people with English as their primary language do not get it correct all the time. :P

My spelling may have been off but I was not quite sober when I wrote it, so to get as much right as I did was actually quite good.

Wow that must have taken quite some time to type out, I'm impressed, hehe. Oh and yes I could read it like you said and agree completely with the post. I'd heard of the same study.

Copy and paste is a wonderful thing, huh?

That is from a reported study by Cambridge Research that is actually an urban legend. I remember when it first showed up about 5 or 6 years ago in my email.

Yup. It's probably urban legend. Goes to show you that stuff dredged from the Internet can be worthless without checking the source(s) of information.

From this site talking about this urban legend:

Quote:

it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae... it doesn't matter in what order the letters in a word are, the only important thing is that the first and last letter be at the right place

This is clearly wrong. For instance, compare the following three sentences:

1) A vheclie epxledod at a plocie cehckipont near the UN haduqertares in Bagahdd on Mnoday kilinlg the bmober and an Irqai polcie offceir

2) Big ccunoil tax ineesacrs tihs yaer hvae seezueqd the inmcoes of mnay pneosenirs

3) A dootcr has aimttded the magltheuansr of a tageene ceacnr pintaet who deid aetfr a hatospil durg blendur

All three sentences were randomised according to the "rules" described in the meme. The first and last letters have stayed in the same place and all the other letters have been moved. However, I suspect that your experience is the same as mine, which is that the texts get progressively more difficult to read. If you get stuck, the sentences are linked to the original unscrambled texts.

Hopefully, these demonstrations will have convinced you that in some cases it can be very difficult to make sense of sentences with jumbled up words. Clearly, the first and last letter is not the only thing that you use when reading text. If this really was the case, how would you tell the difference between pairs of words like "salt" and "slat"?

I'm going to list some of the ways in which I think that the author(s) of this meme might have manipulated the jumbled text to make it relatively easy to read. This will also serve to list the factors that we think might be important in determining the ease or difficulty of reading jumbled text in general.

There is still a very real debate in the psychology of reading, however, about exactly what information we do use when reading. I don't know how much of this literature Dr. Rawlinson was aware of at the time of his thesis, but I do think that the jumbled text provides a neat illustration of some of the sources of information that we now think are important. I'm going to review some of the research that has been done to demonstrate this.

Spelling correctly is not entirely about good communication, although that is a principle reason. Other reasons that are more important is that spelling and grammar can reflect on a person's character, ie. maturity, intelligence/literacy, cultured-ness, etc. Also, spelling correctly and using good grammar makes it easier for others to read, and less stressful on the eyes and the brain (in cases of extremely poor literacy).

While I agree that you are correct in this statement when it comes to most things written in the United States or any other place that English is the official language. However, since there are several who play DR that live in other countries, I'd imagine that it reflects highly on them that not only do they know their own languages they also have a general knowledge (or better) of the English language as well. One should not generalize that simply because someone has some spelling or grammar mistakes, especially in a post, that it automatically reflects on their maturity and character or shows a lack of intelligence.
