Actual Abby Bug?
#43979 - 01/12/08 02:57 PM

Working with my Ice build I was running Cleft of the Searing Knight and noticed something that bothered me. While BSOL WAS running the melee guards would attack my health directly. 5 of 6 trained BSOL should take 71% of all health damage and convert to mana damage. But this was not happening. No mana was being lost while health was dropping fast.

Was this designed as such or is this an actual BUG? I am hoping it is just a bug and can be fixed. I have noticed this as well with mobs in other areas, but with all the work going on with this area I figure it is best to get all the elements tweaked right for those that like this area.

I suspect you had just previously spammed the mana pots. Pots are stackable, so perhaps you were "overfull" of mana, and the mana damage was being calculated, but since you were "overfull" you didn't see it.

I would compare it to a car whose speedometer goes to 120 mph, but in actuality the car goes 150 mph. If you are going 150 mph, and slow down to 120 mph, you do slow your significantly, but your speedometer doesn't move. At the same time, you do see your RPM's on the tachometer drop significantly, and deduce the speedometer is therefore broken.
The bottom line is that Abby's just not fun anymore. Maybe some players like going through 40-50 pots only to die and try again and again and again on normal. Not me.
Not the case this time. all 3 times I tested this at 5 trains it did this. I did not use any mana pots after killing Abby, and going to the chest room. This was also on insane mode.

I tried this at full trains (6 of 6) and it was working correctly, now can I get that train removed? I only trained BSOL fully to see if it made a difference in this case.

Nice analogy though PhobicOne.

This is interesting. While I can not personally attempt to duplicate your results, I do knopw for a fact that there was a bug with blue screen before the patch that was fixed. The problem then was that all damage effected your mana before resistances were calculated. This meant with blue screen up, fire resistance didn't matter at all in Abby because your mana still took the damage whether you had fire resistances up or not. This problem was fixed in the last patch, at least for my level 6/6 blue screen. Is it possible that this is what you are actually experiencing?

Nope, this was AFTER Abby was dead. I would head to the treasure room and watch my health drop like a rock. All 3 times I checked by mousing over my name and my mana took almost no damage if any at all. I think the mana damage I did take was from the archers shots. When I upgraded to full trains this didn't happen. Only at 5 of 6 trains...

And again... Oh, most honorable and venerable devs, PLEASE OH PLEASE untrain that last train in BSOL. It is messing up my whole system!! ARG.. >>

We looked into this concern in quite some detail today and BSoL looks to be working properly at all Ranks. I think the situation you are seeing is simply a result of the drastic difference between your max health vs. your max mana.

With BSoL active, your health is still being damaged although at a decreased rate than normal. With a large difference between your maximum health and max mana, your health will appear to be taking far more damage than your mana will, although the numerical damage is correct. For example: a creature normally hits you for 400 health damage and you turn on BSoL and start taking 70 health damage per hit, while your mana takes 500. If your max health is 7000 and max mana is 40,000, your health bar will drop down much faster than your mana bar. Or another way to see it is that your mana will appear to take no substantial damage, but your health will empty quickly.

Note that I made these numbers up to show a point, but I hope this makes sense.

If you still feel that something else is going on, then please feel free to post again. Any more information you can provide would be helpful in tracking something down. I tried checking out your current build using the Character Data reader that Snarky put together, but it looks like you had changed from your Ice Mage recently. I was able to get a feel for what values of health and mana you had though from it

Ok, I switchback in to my ice gear set and respeced back to the original (5 of 6) stats I used for the 3 runs that I did. I must again say that I did mouse over my name and watch as almost no mama was being lost while a major amount of health was. It was almost like they hit right through the BSoL or it was running in reverse. Small mana loss 100 VS large health loss 600. That is approximately what they were, with both melee attacking at the same time it is hard to gauge exactly. And this was done Solo on Insane mode.

I like to keep my build set so that when attacking and being attacked, my mana and health do go down at approximately the same rate. And yes I am aware that while not casting heavy drain spells my mana will not drop as fast.

I see there was no mention of doing or being able to untrain BSoL. It will be hard for me to replicate the problem again as at full trains damage was acting correctly. And training another mage will be moot, by the time I could get her to 100 the next patch will be out. If it can't be done no worries, I will trudge through as is and train up a replacement.

Thank you for checking on this. I know you are all extremely busy with the heave in internal testing.

Hmmm intriguing that you are seeing that. Could you provide me with more information about what gear you were wearing and what your stats were at? I just checked what was listed for the character named Asheda on the character viewer and it is still a shadow mage.

You could set up the ice character, then copy and paste the raw XML into a PM to me if you want, or describe what the stats were here.

As for untraining a level of BSoL, that's not possible; sorry

While this viewer does not show the correct standing of the equipment level it does show the current equipment.

As noted in another thread the nicer of the 2 viewers is now set to only update about every hour.

I will get a raw feed sent to you in PM.
