3rd Party Soft and Lag/Errors?
#43487 - 01/08/08 03:00 PM |
Well after having crashed 2 times in a row and then having exceptional lag, I wanted to ask 'Is it just me or does the 3rd party View a character online software make any impact?'. The only reason I can see for the View Toon Online deal is for PvP'rs benefit so that they can adjust their gear and skills to defeat another player. In PvE if you see someone with a weapon or gear you like the look of you just ask them to link it and usually they will. Not being a fan of PvP I dont see the need to know what my fellow players have. Ok rant over -------------------- Beware the boredom Monster! |

Hey Lou, I'm not sure how the crashes / lag relate to the 3rd party viewer but I was having some trouble logging in the other day, right after selecting the server the game would freeze and crash back to the desktop, after repairing alls fine... As for the viewer, I think it's also handy if you've never played a class and havent a clue on how to go about it... It's also good for PvP'rs as you said. Here's the link to the stat viewer if anyone wants to have a look: Dungeon Runner Stat Viewer 2.0 DarthNinja -------------------- TLA Clan Leader ¤Ψ«Ŧħę Łээţ Ąśşãŝśïñş Ćłąй»Ψ¤™ Welcome to hell, here's your Pitchfork of Fireproof Taint I have nothing amusing to say here |

The third party app in question isnt run on my computer Ripper its the Online Character Viewer that are mentioned with the NCLauncher. So your saying that the Server in No way has any impact omn lag and lag is purely thru the users computer huh? I think you need to go back to what ever computer degree school you went to and demand your money back. -------------------- Beware the boredom Monster! |

The other software you're running in that case is a web browser. Depending on your machine, that could have an impact. The bandwidth required for Dungeon Runners is fairly low, and the amount of bandwidth required to view a character is even lower (and not a constant drain on available bandwidth). The system that delivers XML over the web is designed to be completely disconnected from the game servers, and our bandwidth is large enough to handle the launch day patch/upgrade of much larger games like Tabula Rasa. As for the purpose of the character viewer... primarily, it's to let players link their characters around. You may have noticed a lot of players list their characters in their signature, and in the last week or so have started using links on the names too. And of course we hope at some point players will start linking to their Dungeon Runners characters on other forums and websites. ![]() |

Quote: Lou, a third party application is a program you run on your computer. In this case, as Anson mentioned, you're running a web browser (which is an application) in the background in addition to Dungeon Runners. Depending on a variety of factors, such as: the actual browser and browser version used (FireFox, IE or Opera, for example), how many BHOs (Browser Helper Objects) such as toolbars, ActiveX components, plugins, your physical hardware (memory, integrity of hard driver, processor), etc..., this could definitely have a negative impact on game performance. At no point did I say the problem was entirely on the your side. I merely addressed Darth's implication that a 3rd party program wasn't local to the PC. There's no reason for you to be insulting. All that being said, the assumption I made, based on the responses to your post, is that you're running the browser in the background. Is your question really "Am I being affected due to other players using the online character viewers while I'm gaming?". If so, according to Anson, you're not. Quote: ive been noticing some problems i cannot directly blame the char sheet viewer for ...however it sure seems suspicious ..i will explain: i have a cabble connection so i will occasionally get packet loss ...witch is simmiler to lagg but it isnt delayed time of sending the info ..its packet loss ..in witch some info is missing from the data sent ..with that explained i will also say on my modem ..i have a light that is blinking as packets are sent and recieved ..and if this light when i look at it isnt steady with the beat ..than i know im getting packet loss ...a few times now in pvp ...i will be fighting somone ..and am NOT experiencing packet loss as far as i can see at that second ..hoowever i cannot change my gear as rapidly as needed ...in other words ...my gear gets locked ..but CAN move around freely..its only for a few seconds ...but that can be alot of time in the heat of battle ..i find it very suspicious and i question if this is possible becouse somone is acessing my xml sheet to view what im using at the same time im trien to change it ...hell im not a computer expert...however i do think its possibe this could be the reason that my gear could get locked for a second ...i would like the testing team to look into that since the dev here is quoting that he and the staff support this 3rd party program without thouroghly thinking about the possible reprecoussions for alowing this to be used ....i am not for ..or against the idea ..becouse i also know u can only GUESS what i might use as a set ..the char sheet viewer is crap in mah opinion .becouse u might think im gunna use what i have on at the second u see it ...but 30 seconds later i can change mah entiree gear set ..and your screwed ..lol...go ahead use it ...but i want to make sure the dev team looks into the reprecautions of alowing 3rd party programs to be used on thier game ....is bashing that view mah gear button really fast and reapetedly gunna lagg me/lock my gear without packet loss?....if so ...it isnt fair than anymore is it ... -------------------- Wreker 5000 pvp wins lvl 100 Wreckit 1350 pvp wins lvl 45 You ALL have been Wreked <<owner of the 1 million crit shot>> 123 days /played |

Quote: This may be a bug (or just lag... it can happen packet loss or no), but it will not be related to the character being viewed through the web. Quote: What we support is the character data provided on our web site; we have designed the system that delivers the character data in order to ensure it does not impact game performance. We do not support web browsers or web sites other than our own, but we may make mention of them. The information available on the web is always going to be outdated: it is updated on a regular but not constant basis, as often as the character data is saved to the database. This happens every time you gain a level or log out, as well as after every fifteen minutes of continuous game play, not every time someone looks at your character. |

Quote: I think you're misunderstanding how all of this works. The character sheet software that Snarky and Demosthenez have put together relies on the character data feed that we provide (e.g., http://www.dungeonrunners.com/characters/Anson is the raw data for my character). In other words, although we don't support what their software does with the data (it could display the wrong thing, for instance), we do support the data feed and make sure that when they use it to provide a character sheet, they can't impact game play. |

i dont need to nor am i all that interested in knowing how it all works ...i am simply saying i dont think your cheriter data feed is a very good idea ...in the relative field it give acess and supports the idea if outside ncsoft programmers to acess things i PERSONALLY dont feel they should gain acess too ..if i want to show off mah gear i would do it in the game ...not a 3rd party program ..but your posative that it wont affect my game play, d view away ...but i think your robbing pvp of alot of tactics .the lower lvl oon wont have more than 2 sets of gear ..and will be totaly vonerable to somone intentionally stacking gear against them..and the secrecy of the pvpers idea of some suprize ..but u all still will get wreked whether u see what i was wearing 15 minutes ago or ...30 seconds ago :P the lower lvl player need thier privacy of what little tactic they can have ...with this in place they can be intentionally ...asassinated way to go! -------------------- Wreker 5000 pvp wins lvl 100 Wreckit 1350 pvp wins lvl 45 You ALL have been Wreked <<owner of the 1 million crit shot>> 123 days /played |

This whole thread is rather silly. The XML viewer uses cached data and does not allow you to look at another person's gear in real time. I find it amusing that people seem to think that they can look at the XML viewer to see someone else's gear in real time to somehow get an advantage. You're looking at old data! If you think it causes lag, then the solution is pretty simple. Don't look at it when you PvP, since it's not giving you a real time feed anyway. -------------------- Mostly complete: Freesia - 7 days, 16 hours, 42 minutes to 100 Currently leveling up: Feisti - currently "dumb as rocks" Fletching - Ranger |
