How do spell resists work?
#43467 - 01/08/08 10:55 AM |
I am talking about everything related to spell resistance. The passive abilities, the temporary buffs, and the resists on armor. Do they all do the same thing? Do they reduce damage, or do they increaes the chance to resists the spell itself? Does level matter in these resists? If I am a lvl 30 with around 200 fire resist, does that just mean if I am hit with 4000 damage, I will only get hit with 3800? Or does it mean I have a certain % chance to resist the attack? Please let me know. |

It's a percentage to completely resist the attack. I don't know exactly how much say 300 resists in fire works, but I do know that with higher resists you'll start seeing a Resist message when an elemental attack hits your character. Resisted attacks mean your character doesn't take any damage. -------------------- Freesia - 7 days, 16 hours, 42 minutes to 100 |

Quote: Yes, but: unlike resists on gear Wards/Buffs do something else: in the case of Wards your resist to X is boosted but the rest of your resists are reduced, Buffs on the other hand only add to your total resist, however the cool down and cost mana whereas wards dont. As for how resists work, they give you a % chance to resist the total attack or the magical part of it, PvP example: If your fighting a fire mage (and you have fire resist) you'll resist the whole attack, Now if your fighting a poison ranger, and you have poison resist you'll resist the poison shot but not the arrow's damage. That said it's mostly something you look for when fighting mages in PvE, in PvP it's a must-have. Hope that answers your questions ![]() DarthNinja -------------------- TLA Clan Leader ¤Ψ«Ŧħę Łээţ Ąśşãŝśïñş Ćłąй»Ψ¤ Welcome to hell, here's your Pitchfork of Fireproof Taint I have nothing amusing to say here |

Ok so now the big question... what do the numbers mean? Has anyone figured out how much exactly 200 fire resist actualy translates to a resistance chance? Or what is the base chance? Is it like crit chance where there is a base 3% then you have to divide the + to gear by 100 or whatever it is? |

Ideal resistance is equal to (13 * level). That is, if you have 13 resistance at level 1 then you'll resist damage about 75% of the time. At level 100, you'll need 1300 resist to have the same percentage. In PvP, the basis for resistance is lower. Instead of 75%, I believe the resistance basis is 35%. steve |

Quote: Stephen - can ideal resistance (75%) be exceeded or is that a hard cap? I'm level 71 at the moment, so my ideal resistance = 13 * 71 or 923. Sheesh, and I thought 359 shadow resistance was decent. It seems that 359 = roughtly 29%. -------------------- Freesia - 7 days, 16 hours, 42 minutes to 100 |

IMHO resisting 1/3 of all magic attacks isn't bad stats unless you are up against Abby's fire storm. And with the numbers given by Stephen plugged in, 100% resist would be 1735% +/-1 at lvl 100. Not easily obtainable from what I have seen. But getting resists that high CAN be done. Worth while or not all depends on where you are and what you are doing. -------------------- And that is just my 2 cents and a haypenny. Welcome to the boards, search is your friend.
