How do you defeat mages/rangers?
#43422 - 01/07/08 04:31 PM |
I would normally put this in the pvp forum, but this is directed to the fighter class specifically. I have been trying over the last few weeks to come up with a good solid combination of attribute points, skills, etc to be able to stay a fighter, but be able to reliably take on a mage or ranger in pvp. I am not looking for an 'I win' setup, or some sort of bug that I can exploit. I am looking for any advice as far as weapons, stat point distribution, spells/skills, armor type, etc. It seems like we get shafted when it comes to points because a mage just need int and endurance. A ranger needs agility and endurance. A fighter needs endurance, strength, agility, and still some int for our attacks. Regarding our armor, we still get shafted. Every high armor rating piece of armor has a -3 to -12% movement speed penalty, so rangers and mages can easily escape us in pvp. I have been trying to come up with a hybread of a pbaoe tank/mage but even this doesn't seem to do too well in the pvp matches. As I see it, if a fighter uses low armor rating armor to boost the run speed, a crit ranger will easily beat them due to the high agility and damage. Also if another fighter is in the match, they will dominate because they will hit them almost every swing, etc. If a fighter uses high armor rating armor, they run super slow, and so a ranger or mage can easily kite them, fear them, slow them, etc etc. If a fighter trys to put more points into endurance to live through the mage/ranger spells, then they gimp their damage, so the ranger or mage will just run away. Has anyone been able to come up with some good tactics or combination of armor type and abilities to be 'successful' at pvp? Please let me know. Also, I really don't need people being rude and trying to claim I am just not playing my class correctly. I am looking for productive feedback. |

First of all, HP isnt everything anymore, be sure you have 25k+ defense rating as a level 100 (I dont kmnow your level so..) after that, be sure to have some poison resistance against acidic blight, thats really needed. Get 40k hp MINIMUM in-match. Dont focus on damage when you dont reach that. Next to that I can only speak of 2 Handed weps, get % speed, +dps and % dmg. Try to get some reistance as well. I like grandma for its:"When it hits you hit hard" thing, but a fast 2H like Wake of the devastator is cool too as you got nice dmg, but still are very fast. When you have more kills, NEVER chase the enemy, its pointless. Also dont let yourself get lured easily by a mage or ranger. When they slow you down and run and then shoot at you, be prepared. Thereby also: Light in the Loafers is a MUST. I hope that might help a bit. |

My main is a mage, but I've played all of the classes extensively in PvP. Check out my build by clicking here. I'm a kiting mage. I keep my health fairly low and focus on intellect for damage. Warriors that kick my butt are experts with Holy Roller. I have to really work hard to keep them at bay. Go for dual wielding vs. mages. The decreased cooldown on skills like Holy Roller will keep you in the mage's face more often. Attack rating isn't a strong requirement vs. anyone wearing cloth armor. Any warrior worth his salt will hit a cloth wearer 80% or more. Toss in Mad Melee Mastery to get that up in the 90% range. Resistances are key in fighting a mage or poison slinging ranger. Get the resistance skills and use them properly to offset damage. If you can afford it, get mutltiple gear sets and swap to your advantage during combat. With reasonable gear and skills you can easily get 70% resistance to a single damage type. Light in the Loafers gives 15 seconds of full mobility. This is critical for a closing in for a melee kill. Remember, a running mage isn't causing damage. ![]() I've also seen Teleport used to amazing advantage by clever warriors. It can be used in conjunction with Holy Roller to finish off a running mage. Say, you may also want to pack Fear of Gosh and Soul Rend as they make a great combo. Those damage over time skills pay dividends in the long run. steve |

Awesome advice guys, I appreciate the constructive feedback. Just out of curiosity, does level variance play a big roll? I have found that most of the people that really lay the smack down are people who are around lvl 75-100. My highest is only 25 at the moment. I keep re-rolling characters, build them up with mostly purples, with maybe one rainbo and one yellow. Then around lvl 20ish I'll take him for a test drive. My current favorite is a pbaoe type mage. I have found it quite convienient for those who like to stand inside me to gaseus blast-fire ring, stomp, then nuke the crap out of them with fire bolts. It has worked out well, but then again he isn't really a fighter, he is an 'Arcane Vanquisher'. Thanks again for the help. |

Level doesn't play that much of a role in PvP, though it still does play some part. For one thing, higher leveled characters can potentially horde equipment for longer amounts of time before they level and the equipments lose effectiveness. Another factor is skills, higher levels can have more powerful skills. This can mean very little, or it can mean a lot: such as in the case of Blue Screen of Life. x_x |

I was wonderring how that all works out... Like if I am lvl 20 using the lvl 18 spells, is that the same as a lvl 100 using the maxed out spells such as firebolt and what not? What about things such as armor rating? If I am a lvl 25 fighter with around 6000 armor rating, how does that scale up to a lvl 100 with several thousand armor rating. I understand that some things are scaled up, but I would think that a fire bolt trained 20/20 would do more damage than a fire bolt trained at 3/20 (at lvl 18) Thanks for any info. I am not trying to be a pain, I am just one of those min/max type people. I like to have the 'perfect' setup. |

Its fine to ask such things, everyone has to atleast know it and this is the chance to let us explain it good About the different ranks in skills.. The effects are NOT scaled, thats why higher level people can be more "pwning", but the damage thats different each rank is scaled up. The scaling up isnt something we know the maths of, but when you look to the enchantment you see:"Scaled UPTO level 101" so that means that when you have 6000 armor at level 25 you got 24240 def rating at level 101, and I think thats sort of how it goes. For a PvPer thats pretty low in level (50 and below) its NEEDED that your gear is max 2 levels below your own level as you can suffer horrible losses when not doing that. Your gear is scaled with you, that being said a level 25 with a level 24 item will have a level 100 item when scaled, so when you have a lvl 25 with lvl 20 gear you got lvl 96 gear in pvp, which is not that great. |
