Any non-shadow/ring of fire mages out there?
#43206 - 01/05/08 02:30 PM |
I see some people spec into ice for Abby or boss farming but the vast majority of mage builds I see are largely the AoE version / "Demonic Crypt farm" builds (mine's no exception). Essentially, it's: L/R click - Shadow Lightning / Shadow Bolt or Fire Bolt Skills - Improved Shadow Lightning, Ring of Fire, Gaseous Blast, Blue Screen of Life and your choice of passives (Bookworm, Gym Freak, Average BMI for some) Besides a couple of stat differences, differing gear and a little variation in some skill choices, mage builds are pretty much the same. I don't blame this on players because ultimately, most players will gravitate with what works best and fire/shadow/gas are just what you have for AoE choices. Still, it would be nice to see some other variants. Anyone use Shadow Word Smackdown for example or equips a bow to take advantage of the ranger spells? -------------------- Mostly complete: Freesia - 7 days, 16 hours, 42 minutes to 100 Currently leveling up: Feisti - currently "dumb as rocks" Fletching - Ranger |

With my old mage I used smackdown extensively, with lightning and ROF - I love the "whhhhhhpsshhhhh!" smack sound it makes and the guys flying around. For 8 lvls I used Demonsniper with him (the +shad dmg and mana steal rbw xbow) It was fun and he looked cool, but I was MUCH more effective in terms of clearing lvls, xp, and loot just doing the "normal" shadow mage build like you said. I didnt die or anything, but I ended up switching back and then starting two new characters after chunk 2. -------------------- "The future is in your grasp, be sure to reach for it before hands more determined and bloody than your own wrench it away." |

I have 2 builds, one for Abby: one boss max single enemy damage and one for everything else: AoE for HDoL Ratsputen etc. Build 1 For Abby: Skills from left to right. Ice Mage,
For everything but Abby I use the same spells: Build 2 Shadow Mage
Hope that helps DarthNinja PS: Check out my Ice Staff -best yet found- (Insert evil laugh here): Whizz-Bang Shaman Staff of the Stone Cold Platypus +215 Intellect +8% to all Ice Damage +171 Damage per Second to Ice Attacks (Thanks Dungeon Runners stat viewer 2.0 for the the ability to cut 'n paste item stats )-------------------- TLA Clan Leader ¤Ψ«Ŧħę Łээţ Ąśşãŝśïñş Ćłąй»Ψ¤™ Welcome to hell, here's your Pitchfork of Fireproof Taint I have nothing amusing to say here |

You have Shadow Bolt twice on the second build, but I assumed you meant Shadow Lightning for one of them. Why Acidic Blight though? Not much point for a Mage unless you are grouping or hybriding. |

And next to that Shadow bolt isnt handy at all, the guards will definitely gain the priority of the bolts, and they curve and dont do much damage anyway. |

Shadow Bolt has the highest average damage of all the Bolt spells. It may seem like its maximum damage is low, but its minimum damage is insanely high. I like Shadow Bolt for its consistently medium-high damage, as opposed to Fire Bolt and Ice Shards; which sometimes hits ridiculously high, but most of the time simply tickles your opponent. |

It makes the baddies turn green and smoke while producing a neat sound effect. Isnt that enough? -------------------- "The future is in your grasp, be sure to reach for it before hands more determined and bloody than your own wrench it away." |

Quote: Absolutely! I was using AB until someone told me that it doesn't help w/ magic attacks. It does really sound cool, though. Ya' know, I can't think of a single downside to MAKING THE CURSE WORK FOR BOTH physical AND magical weakening of our pernicious little (and big) foes. Those extra few percentage points would really be nice. How about it, has anyone formally asked for this? It seems like a rather mild change to an existing effect and would be welcomed by most, I think. -------------------- A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing. - Emo Philips |

Acidic Blight weakens Defense Ratings. Magical Attacks IGNORES Defense Ratings. Isn't that enough? |

I tried using a vis'kar's bilespitter (rainbow green looking crystal launcher) just to try out something new as I'm an almost identical build. I was toying with the theory that I might be able to shoot for some extra dps in between shadow lightning shots. I found that the agility that I had to put into my character in order to make me hit even a small percentage of the time lowered my int to the point where I was actually doing alot less damage overall. I have a friend who has a poison AoE ranger build that works very well, about 95% as fast as AoE mage builds. I'm not sure exactly how he has it worked though as the setup looks odd to me. In short, I'm not sure how to hybridize the two, but I think you are on the right track, even if I could not make it work. |
