Poison focused rangers?
#42604 - 12/30/07 12:33 PM |
Hey guys, this may sounds dumb to some, but my ranger at lvl 15 has been built just for speed, AR and crit so far. For some reason I just have a real desire to build a full-blown agi/int ranger with all the poison skills (as it seems that was one way they were intended to be used judging by the skill trainer) So does anyone out there play a full poison ranger and do well with it? I have Vilespitter stashed in the bank for lvl 17, and it would be a perfect weapon for this as it seems. Post me up what you have for skills and what you use all the time/stats so I can get an idea of what anyone might be doing with this. I like to walk the tracks sometimes...thats all, I know it probably wont be efficient but oh well. Thanks ahead of time all... ![]() -------------------- "The future is in your grasp, be sure to reach for it before hands more determined and bloody than your own wrench it away." |

I think you might be talking about a Poison Mage - Mage armor ammy and rings + ranger boots gloves etc - Bilespitters (not vile ) are the best choice for poison mage.Happy New Years! posion rangers not so great for training and boss farming pvp they dont do so bad but a personal fav build is the crit ranger. very fast for trainin and boss farming and heres the reason why. see if this changes ur mind. now because ur base crit hit chance is only 3% all this crit iht gear adds up to what seems a very minimal amount and at lvl 100 canhave up to gear that is about 500% crit hit chance which is 18% total this seems like a very insignificant number to base a whole build around but here me out. most crit ranger take the speed aprouch to deal out large amounts of damage quickly therefore not needing so large amounts of health where can be better spend on agil. so on average id say a crit ranger has about 0.43 attack speed now when u do the maths on average ud land a crit hit about every 2 seconds which with all the agil u will have will be a nice looking number. also using things like acidic blight to lower defence increases the hit chance which is approx 95 % (dont quote me im not EXACT) and also with the attack rating u will have from the agility will ri[ thru most defence of monster defence and player defence. crit rangers can decent damage but is done of a larger period of time and normally to a larger area of enemies. ALSO IF U GOING FOR POSION RANGEr / MAGE HYBRID USE A DEMON SNIPER speed - freakin fast + x% agility - usefull + x% mana steal - very usefull freaking fast bows that give agility are always very usefull espec as u want mana aswell a demon sniper seems like a goo dbow for u -------------------- RangedRange - 400 pvp wins - level 10 TheDungeonRunner - 40 pvp wins - lvl 33 |

Thanks you two, the heavy poison build respec is working great: heres my current build/plan that is working awesome. Build even +2 int, +2 end, +1 agi; odd +2 agi, +2 end, +1 int (seems spread out but working awesome. worked hard so far to acquire the allusive bonesplint armour pcs which are heavy +end, +hp and +lots poison dmg per second. Happen to have brass ringlets rbw and bilespitter rbw/ slow to shoot but awesome dmg and poison bonus. skills as follows: LM : TFF RM: Nox shot (main attack explained below) GB, Retribution, Toxic talent, SOH, whatever resist, mental prowess, avg bmi, trigger..ah ranger passive, lol Mental prowees gives benefit to magic dmg, and ranger passive for spd, the two cancel out 7% of each others penalty for spd and magic dmg and somehow doesnt change the stats bonus...cool heres how lvls go; Toxic talent, tff, spam nox shot aimed at larger enemy in group to hit others (kind of like ranged GB), continue NS until mob closes TOO close if they do, toss GB, run back, resume nox shot spam, repeat. Im hardly ever taking dmg as most 90% of mobs drop bodies as they close on me and i use about 1/2 my mana each good size mob, pop 1 pot and im good. Im using nox shot on spam RM bc I figure it this way vs poison shot.. Nox shot cooldowns 1.4 sec, and it clicks twice (dmg over 2 sec to 4 + enemies) when it hits. PS hits one target, cooldown 1.1 or .2 but clicks 4 times and poison doesnt stack... my logci seems to be working great according to the dmg numbers that pop up. When i can buy monster bait and Putrid pen. ill get those, drop MB, pop putrid, then spam nox shot on the rabble on the ground and eatin my chicken...lol Thanks a lot guys for listening to my blathering and if anyone has bone splint armour pcs for rangers they dont want or extra bile spitters happy hunting -------------------- "The future is in your grasp, be sure to reach for it before hands more determined and bloody than your own wrench it away." |

I am used being a ranger, but with no poison. It might be good to have it and shoot it once in 3 seconds or so, but I find it destroys my regular speed a bit.. and after all poison doesnt stack, so its work for nothing actually. I consider a poison ranger as just another ranger that has a bit int, uses poison once in awhile and uses different skills, but being a full poison ranger only shooting poison skills all in a row without normal arrows is totally useless, poison doesnt stack. -------------------- LegendRunner - level 100 Ace something The Townstons Wiki Archive! - Boss of TT Dont Feed The Trolls! i agree with runner, since the nerf on gaseous blast, poison rangers aren't really much of an option, sure they have potential to do decent damage but not near what a pure agi ranger can do. |

Yeah the poison not stacking thing sucks, but thats why I really tried to figure out the speed/poison dps thing a lot the last few days. I think ive figured out why bilespitter has a sloth spd, and its on purpose. Since Im using the Bilespitter now, it adds its own poison dmg and the nox blast clicks 2 sec - i think thats the reason for bilespitter having a "sloth" speed, so that you DONT outstack your skill on purpose. So, after playing the same lvl over 4 times and recording dmg from bilespitter/vs a regular xbow with poison and agi+, I do MORE dps with poison dmg from noxious shot attack in mob AND dont outstack my skill - if i have to throw BG when they finally close, thats fine bc the NS effect has worn off quickly. The gb lasts longer, giving me chance to run back/sideways or whatever then resume my above cycle. Im tellin you guys, lol, its working some how! We'll have to see as time goes on and I buy/change/try different skills. if it still seems efficient eventhough it really "shouldnt" be....::shrugs:: maybe Ive really discovered the uber-poison ranger build! lol -------------------- "The future is in your grasp, be sure to reach for it before hands more determined and bloody than your own wrench it away." |

teclis that is exactly why , the fact that the bow is slothful means that poison isnt stacked as much and in the long run doing more damage espec AoE thus increasing the exp gained in that time. like running thru demonic crypts easy exp with all the monsters agro on you use all the AoE skills then u dont rely so heavily on the agility skills but still you need some as noxious shot will only work when it hits. For a good guide on poison rangers copy the link here: http://www.thetownstons.com/thetownstons/index.php/Poison_Ranger reccomends good gear to use etc... Most of the stuff there all from the guys in the townstons i contributed a bit aswell to try n help you guys out ^_^ -------------------- RangedRange - 400 pvp wins - level 10 TheDungeonRunner - 40 pvp wins - lvl 33 |

Btw, forgot to tell you in some other thread we're both endlessly on, your posts are much better recently (spelling and readability). -------------------- "The future is in your grasp, be sure to reach for it before hands more determined and bloody than your own wrench it away." |

Quote: I think there's a misconception here, and I'd like to correct it (since what I wrote probably introduced it). The individual poison skills, except Gaseous Blast, don't stack with themselves. If you hit a single monster with Poison Shot, Noxious Shot, and Gaseous Blast, you're still doing three separate DoT effects that stack with each other - but if you hit the same monster with Poison Shot 3 times in a row before the duration of the first wears off, then the net effect is that the monster takes damage from a single Poison Shot DoT over a longer period of time (each new shot extends the duration). If you're dealing with more than one monster, you can pepper them as a group with Noxious Shot, cycle through each one with a Poison Shot, and typically enough time passes when you're done that they're ready for another Noxious Shot (and soon after, more Poison Shots). Gaseous Blast will stack with itself, as the single exception right now. |

Well as far as PvP goes none of the well none Ranger build seem to do very good at all as being a poison ranger you rely to heavily upon your AoE skills which in PvP are abuot as useful as an ash tray on a motorbike. Then Crit rangers rely on doing quick and fast damage but at the samer time having the bair minimum health meaning they do fast damage but by the time they buff they are dead you need a combination of both to succeed. But i belive we need more skills for crit ranger as most AoE skills as LR said are poison which in many places doent prove to useful. -------------------- RangedRange - 730 pvp wins - level 10 <-- click for build... Are you guys turning my topic into a ranger pvp skill discussion?! How dare you! lol... It does seem like all the ranger skills are "poison" I suppose, but all the fighter skills are "divine" mostly, so its kind of the same thing, no? Quote: How about adding on some other passives to your skill bar? Happy Trigger, Gym Freak, and BMI Average should be there to boost hps and firing speed. Location would matter to me as well, so I would put a passive on right mouse and poison shot on left mouse. I havent compared a lot of blue to yellow equipment, but try to find out where the break in base attribute may be. Should give you some advantage when upgrading. |

Quote: It really looks like your build is incomplete. From what I've seen, poison rangers start doing well when they get noxious shot at level 15. I'd say level some more, get better gear and more skills. I would also say you should invest in passives like avg bmi; for the same penalties in dmg and int, they give you alot more hps. As you level up, you will need the hitpoints as critters hit much harder. yeah thats true, and ive been checking that guide, and i sometimes use avg bmi and gim freak+ bookworm when fighting boss/champs/heros, but on regular fighting id rather not use them since to get the extra hp i have so sacrifice int and agi :/ and to get int/mp i have to sacrifice agi :P |

check out my poison ranger as he is currently - the poison ranger really starts to be effective once you get nox shot, but theres a couple diff ways to go. You dont need to worry about speed as poison ranger, just connecting with shots to cause the poison effect, and end and int. Agility bonus comes a lot from gear. I have high end and then more or less even int and agi. Check out my toon on snarkys or demons viewer : Aerator. He will change soon with getting to lvl 25, but we'll see what happens as time goes on. Good luck - and you need a bilespitter, lol. -------------------- "Yorn desh born, der ritt de gitt der gue, Orn desh, dee born desh, de umn bork! bork! bork!" - my wife fell in love with me bc of the swedish chef...go figure lol. no i dont buy much of anything, its hard to buy stuff that you really need when you get set on a build. 90% of my gear is from farming with 2 chars and passing the needed gear for both back and forth. I farmed sissi about 50 times with each toon when they got to him, from lvl 13 to 17ishl then ran through alg terror dome to SC with both, and farmed SC with both from 18 to where they are now - my fighter at 23 and the ranger at 20. Other than that, Ill take gifts as ppl offer, but I try to get all my own gear. -------------------- "Yorn desh born, der ritt de gitt der gue, Orn desh, dee born desh, de umn bork! bork! bork!" - my wife fell in love with me bc of the swedish chef...go figure lol. I have to admit that i have never really cared for using poison, except for the occasional time i hit PvE. In PvP, taking an example from what LR said, the time it takes for you to use a poison skill, theres taking out the damage you could have caused with your bow. They can resist poison, but they cant resist good old fashion arrows. -------------------- Level 72 Ranger |

Anson, Do Nox Shots and Poison Shots from other players stack? What about other DOTs? I always wondered with a group with more than one ranger as I can't see anyone else's damage but my own... And for those building poison rangers don't forget to add Mental Prowess to your passives.... good god don't forget. That's 20% to all magical damage at a cost of 7% Ranged attack speed, which really isn't your main damage output, just the method of delivery. I didn't see it on any of the posts so I thought I'd add that. -------------------- ------=== Babs ===----- Spetsdod - Lvl 100 Ranger (DungeonRunners, W2) / Moderator: Townstons Wiki Master Sergeant (Exteel) KrindiFain - Master Sergeant (Exteel) -Semper Gumby (Always Flexible) |

I believe this is how it works. Different skills used by yourself stack. The same skill used by yourself does not stack. Any skill used by different people always stack. |

Ive noticed that if i use nox shot, and then use poison shot, the monsters hp will drain much faster, so i think they work both poisons at the same time, but when i use gaseous blast it wont. |
