Ranger Knockback/Stun?
#42165 - 12/23/07 04:45 AM

Has anyone suggested adding knockback to the ranger skill list?

I realize that rangers have putrid penetration, which is a knockdown/knockback of sorts.

Perhaps this can be added to make shotguns or slower ranged weapons a more popular alternative.

Warriors go toe to toe as tanks.
BSOL Mages can tank after a fashion or use their speed to keep out of trouble.
Rangers have neither the speed nor the HP to do either.

While I've adjusted my build to compensate for often being a "melee ranger", I remember my days back on D2 driving a group of cows off a sorc buddy.

I can't help but wonder if knockback or making stun applicable to arrows has ever been considered or tested.

Keep in mind, that the crossbow wielding runts would also have access to this skill, but of course the counter would be a high def (gotta hit em to knock em back) backed by thickhead (well yeah you hit me, but I got a thick skull and I'm just gonna bull through anyways).

I really want to be able to give the bladesingers, hulks and log-wielders a taste of their own medicine for all the bruises I've gotten in the past 100 levels.

Maybe this could be a use for those wonderful pure agi, +ranged, +% crushing items I sometimes get?

i think we kind of have that secretly already kinda , ive had several ranger account and i found that when fighting hulks in certain areas they get knocked back so i dont think there will be bonuses for it but im pretty sure its already there but if there was a way like critical hit to increase the chance of succsess that seems like a good idea

The big hits already auto-stun quite a bit, and my current build makes heavy use of the awesome power of smackdown to limit close encounters.

With the cast timers on penetration and smackdown I usually find I have enough knockdown to finish the job, you've also got the option of righteous stomp, which I only just recently removed from my bar because I nearly never needed to use it.

HOWEVER, a heavy hitting knockdown arrow would be welcome, and I think adding +%stun chance to range weapon roll tables as an option in place of one of the DPS or ATR buffs would be a great way to get some more weight out of the slower weapons.

yes i do notice that too. i've most of my gear having crit bonuses, and i notice that when i do land a crit the mobs almost always get knockback.

Rangers have Putrid but also Fear Shot and they can use Smackdown too. what I'd like to see is a Fear spell for us mages.

Rangers can use Putrid Shot, Fear Shot, Righteous Stomp, ShadowWord: Smack Down. Fighters can use Holy Roller, Butcher, Fear of Gosh, Righteous Stomp, ShadowWord: Smackdown. What can Mages use? Righteous Stomp and ShadowWord: Smackdown. Two less stuns than Fighters, one less stun that Rangers, no fear attack.

Really though, I don't mind that much except for the no fear part. Homing Shadow Bolts and Fear Spells will make a tasty combination... which is probably why Mages don't have one.

about 90% of all critical hits will take a knockback effect on a monster as a ranger but as we can hit form quite a distance this means that the knockback is very minimal as to avoid a stupid amount of time being wasted as they get knocked back / down then have to get back to the ranger massive damage could be done with a minimal amount of damage being taken if this was to take effect i think that it would have to be so low as a ranger that it would be unnoticable or that it wud be to high and therefore over powering ranger and then in the next batch they just fix it anyway.

we would end up having a base knockback chance of like 2% so if it was the same as crit hit gear with an aprox max of 500% making it 10% as a ranger with the ability to have freakin fast wepons and with the new TFF edits a ranger would land a knockback / stnu every 1 second or 1.5 seconds and thats only with a base of 2 and if it was much lower than that then it would be pointless.

the idea i belive is very good and i am still all for it it just gives rangers more things to experiment with and diff builds to muck with but i dont think it would go down aswell as crit rangers do.

but each to there own ^_^

Yes, I wonder what will happen with knockbacks / crits after rangers get to dual wield

w8 w8 w8 w8 backup.... dual wield?

ok now dont go telling me no lies! im exited now... but there seems to be several reasons why it wont happen or they take them away..

TFF at max can have a 115% speed buff 1 handed wepons tend to be alot faster than 2 handed wepons meaning attack speed with attack speed gear on also wud end up being sumthing stupid like 0.1 lol

the ability to wield is sumthing a ranger doesnt have as its another good point for other classes meaning that if rangers get 2 wepons 99% of people will become rangers.

so if they do they will either make a new TFF for 1 handed ranged stuff or not do it... i hope they do it but also find a way to make it balanced

1H ranger weapons exist already just not in the live game yet. They are very very unbalanced though. Still need to be worked on before they will make them into the live server. I only assume that you will be able to dual wield them.

Yep, problems with wielding a 1H gun and an axe or sword, I believe. The icons that come along in the item pack contain 4 or 5 icons of guns, which are already made, but arent in the game yet because of the above problem.

hmm well seems good , they may be in the PTS i look forawrd to testing it out if it is , maybe they will do as they did with the 1h melee wepons and make a complete diff ranged buff to make it even

Knockbacks are needed spells in the repertoire of a ranger. Although there are some armor/weapons that come with a % stun chance, i think it is completely useless in PvP, as i have yet to see it take effect. I go with Smack, Fear, Shout, Loafers, and sometimes i throw in Hare to catch the pesky mage every now and then.

Putrid Penetration is a great skill, especially since it has a narrow cone. If you can bunch up mobs or players, you can knock them all down (assuming to hit success on each mob or player). It can be used particularly well in PvP if you knock a player against a wall, pop TFF then unload on them before they get their bearings (much like Fear Shot).

The downside, of course, like all other ranger shots is that:

1) It can be sidestepped
2) If it hits, there's still a "to hit" check

Personally, I like hitting a player with PP as soon as they appear from a teleport (for those players that like to TP in their approach and pop up behind you). They really don't appreciate it!
