Ultimate Guide v. 0.1.0 BETA lol
#41411 - 12/15/07 01:44 AM |
One Extremely Ultimate Guide to Everythingness!! VERSION 0.1.0 BETA!! (lol) Table of Contents A – Leveling B – Helpful Terms C – Helpful Links/Threads D – Skills & Builds E - Notice A - Leveling So, I had a hard time looking for a complete leveling guide when I was leveling. I thought I would come up with a little something myself. This will be the main part of the guide. The rest of the guide is stuff to help you level faster. Note: This guide will only help you till about 1-30, and is not the most efficient way. This is simply the way I used to level without Power Leveling/Power Farming. When doing dungeons for XP, Fastest way to level is on NORMAL. You won’t get as many drops, but you’re looking to get FAST experience points here and normal mode is the easiest way to kill. Also, make sure you keep up with your skills that you use in your build. Better skills = Quicker kills. 1.) When you first start out, just go through Dew Valley and its dungeons and learn how to play the game. Quests aren’t necessary for experience, so I didn’t even bother doing them. This will level you up little bit. After going through and killing things along the way, you will get to about level 3 pretty fast. At the end, Kill Rattletooth and go into Townston, it leads you to Algernon. 2.) In Algernon. I slowly went through, trying to kill everything on every level before I moved on. This gave me decent experience. However, I did skip the side dungeons. (Orok Outpost, Dark Forrest, etc.) This brought me to level 7 (almost 8). I killed Sissirat with a group a bunch of times after this, this gave me the gold I needed for skills and decent XP. I did this to about level 11. 3.) At level 11, I went into Algor's Terror Dome Base Camp, which led me to Algor's Terror Dome. In Algor's Terror Dome, I slowly went through it trying to kill everything on every level before moving on. When I reached Lair of Snow Chieftain, I grouped up the first couple times. (The Experience here is great.) I did this to level 25. 4.) At level 25, I went into the Vexation Station which leads you to Vergrim's Vexation. As I did on the other levels, I killed everything on every level before I moved on. When I encountered Vergrim. I was hoping for a little more Experience off of him, but it wasn’t the greatest experience. I leveled off Vergrim till I got bored, and moved into the Widowers Nest Base Camp. 5.) Widowers Nest. This is where I currently am. More info about it will follow later. B -Helpful Terms Ever see people using terms you don’t know? Here is what most of them mean! LFG = Looking for Group LFM = Looking for More SC = Snow Chieftain Sissi/Sissy = Sissirat HDoL = Horrific Dungeon of Legend KC = King’s Coin PL = Power Leveling PF = Power Farming C – Helpful Links/Threads - Dungeon Runners Wiki - VERY NICE -JoeB1978 Dungeon Runner Map -How Character Stats Work D – Skills & Builds Mage AOE farming XP leveling Build by Overpowerd - Click Here to See Build Poison and Critical Ranger Builds – Click Here to See Build Sissirat Fighter Build (low level) - Click Here to See Build E – Notice Some of this information was gathered from the Dungeon Runners Thread’s and I don’t take full credit for everything written here. I would also like to note that, I did this solely for the purpose of curing my boredom. LoL. This guide is NO WHERE NEAR complete, but I figured id start something up. I’d also like to point out that almost all this information can be found on http://www.thetownstons.com. Hope this helps some people out. See you all in game. As this guide makes me feel like playing again =P Edited by Hollen (12/15/07 01:48 AM) |

I'm not sure about leaving Dew Valley at level 3. Shouldn't you stay there longer? |

I was level 4 when i killed rattletooth, and as stated, this is simply just what i did to level. Thanks for the input though. If everyone puts in input like this, maybe we can make a full comprehensive guide for leveling. Tips to make it alittle quicker. You said that not doing is quests is fine, as they don't help you level. You forgot that many of the quests are chians. In other words, new quests don't open unless you finish old ones, and quests give you King's Coins. Those coins are very nice to have for getting some nice items. That's all. -------------------- Blenda, "Sneaking about in the shadows is not really how you play DR. A good way to get decent gear and more gold for training early on is to keep repeating the Rattletooth fight at the end of Dew valley Lvl 3, by resetting the instance, and increasing the level of difficulty. As Dew Valley is far easier than Algernon, you can probably handle formidable and extreme difficulty without any problems and get your character in much better shape before transitioning to Algernon, and at the same time get enough gold for all the training you will need. Just a thought. I think staying in Dew Valley til Level 7 might be a better choice. You can get XP in a dungeon up to 5 levels past what it is rated to, thus, I would say after you have explored everything (which is what I would recommend on your first character), then if you want to just level or farm for loot, go back to the Snow Chief until Level 30. At least that was my experience. On your 2nd and 3rd characters, you can just focus on where to level, but for your first, I would try to do most of the quests and explorer everything. There are a lot of very funny aspects of the game you would miss otherwise. It's not a race to 100, is it? Especially since I think there seems to be a lack of new content at level 100, it's probably pretty much the same stuff you've been running already. |

Quote: Quests dont give you any bonus experience and take up more time. I have gotten plenty of KC without doing quests. Just killing Heroes and opening chests. Plus, you will probably farm bosses at the end with a group for alittle and this will get you plenty of gold and gear for you to move on. Quote: This may be another great way to start out. I have not personally tried it. However, some people want to just level up and get to higher levels quick as possible. This is what I would like this guide to eventually do. I hope to eventually have skill builds for certain dungeons, recommended gear, and anything to possibily help speed up leveling. Recommended times to move onto the next zone.. etc. I would like to thank both of you for adding your comments, as I will be using this information to help make a more complete guide to leveling! I will make sure to include your names into the credits ![]() Edited by Hollen (12/15/07 02:12 PM) |

Quote: This is generally good advice, but quests really need to be worth doing. Getting 3000 gold and 1 KC at low level quests is not a great reward for the time involved. I know it scales as you level up, but even then what Hollen says is right on the money. Quests waste time - I'm still doing them on one character, but I *know* it affects leveling speed. Fastest leveling at any level seems to be get into the right leveling area (Snowchief, Demon Crypts, Embercore) as fast as possible and repeat the instances. Farm bosses if cash dries up, but generally this game rewards repetitive play. I really wish it wasn't the case, but the until the devs look at time-reward balance and make quests worthwhile, most players may feel that they aren't worth it. -------------------- Currently leveling up: Freesia - mage Feisti - fighter Fletching - ranger |

Hey Hollen, You might consider adding this part to your guide: *General build advice for the new player - many exceptions exist* Fighters - need Strength, Endurance, Agility; they don't need Intelligence. Common attribute allocations: * All Strength - Endurance and Agility from items. * Strength/Endurance 3/2 or 4/1 split. Agility from items. * Strength/Agility/Endurance - 3/1/1 split or 2/1/2 split. Mages - need Intelligence and may need Endurance; they don't need Strength or Agility. Common attribute allocations: * All Intelligence - Endurance from items. * Intelligence/Endurance - 4/1 or 3/2 split. Rangers - need Agility, Endurance and may need Intelligence depending on build selected; they don't need Strength. Common attribute allocations: * All Agility - Endurance and Intelligence from items. * Agility/Endurance - 4/1 or 3/2 split. Intelligence from items. * Agility/Endurance/Intelligence - 3/1/1 split. I suggest this because many new players ask this question quite a bit. And for PvE, these ratios seem to make for the most optimum builds. I'm still a newb here, but I've picked up this much. Of course, PvP builds would look quite a bit different. Having an experienced player fill in a section about most optimum skills to pick up for a beginning player would be a good help too (for example, having gaseous blast on a mage or average BMI for a fighter). Edited to remove Agility requirements from Mage builds. -------------------- Currently leveling up: Freesia - mage Feisti - fighter Fletching - ranger Edited by FSeries (12/15/07 06:52 PM) |

Quote: Some changes from a most experienced player. Mages never need Agi. Agi only affects your chance to hit with weapon, something that a mage should not want to do. Which rereading you say but then you put "Agility from items" on the builds for mage. -------------------- JoeB - Level 100 - Back to a Fighter where he belongs SirOldBottom - Level 42 - Shadow Merc Mearlin - Level 29 - Mage Dungeon Runners Map Build 0.95 |

Something I don't get is why people want to level as fast as possible. I hear it over and over, high level people who wish there was more to do at higher levels. I'm in my 50's and it's starting to slow up and there are not any more quests for a while to break the leveling tedium. I still enjoy doing it though. But... My advice is to go ahead and do the quests. enjoy the great stories that the dev's have put together for you to do. Some of them are more fun to read than to actually do. Do not waste your time trying to level up as fast as you can as you will also not be able to go back and do some of those quests later. They do drop off as you out-level them. -------------------- Blenda, "Sneaking about in the shadows is not really how you play DR. agreed. What's the rush? 100 is just a number. At that point you have beat the game, but not the quests, not most of the funny [censored] like spying on F3, the recently downsized convention. Take your time. I starting to go back and do quests I didn't do. Also note that if you don't do some quests, you can't do the later version. So if you don't do one of the bigger quests in algernon, or algors, you won't be able to do the version for more gold/KC in widowers/frumps Unless its an alt, whats the point of power-lvling. You miss out on the game |

I call it the 3 - days 100 mentality. People rush to 100 within 3 to 5 days playtime, farm 10 lvl 100 mythics and quit the game. And the value of being a 100 goes down as there are also people that actually played it to 100, and those get nothing in return because people almost abuse the game by getting so high in so few time. And then you got people asking for a power level (and many fellow 100's can speak with me on this one) which is really annoying. I see lvl 30's in the crypts. And a week later you stand next to them "congrats"-ing him with his final ding while you think by yourself *Hmm.. shall I ask this dude how the storyline actually went, im sure he wont come further then the second bunch of quests in algernon*. -------------------- LegendRunner - level 100 Ace something The Townstons Wiki Archive! - Boss of TT Dont Feed The Trolls! i agree 100% with you LR. They make monsters harder but really want they still need to due is fix the crypts. Make lava and lava like the burning lava crypts (with the healers). This will slow up lvling and still give them a place to lvl as embercore you can aoe as well its just not as fast as the crpts. You can also aoe the crypts too if they changed them all to like burning lava but its much harder. |

Clamm. Forced slowing up of leveling is not what I, or anyone else I read, are advocating. I am saying players should not be in such a hurry to level up. The storyline and early quests are just fun to run for the amusement factors and really helps immerse you in the game itself. Skipping all the side dungeons? That = boredom to me. Think of all the fun stuff you'd miss skipping quests. Sitar Hero is one that clearly sticks out to me. Rotgut's WMD's, It's Burning Man, and many many more. I made sure I did every quest till only the repeatables were left from every dungeon, just to see what all was out there and many times it suprised me. Many times it made me laugh out loud. It was just a lot of fun. -------------------- Blenda, "Sneaking about in the shadows is not really how you play DR. Quote: Then obviously this isnt the guide for you. There are people out there who want to level up. This will help them. Not everyone has the same gameplay preferences. Also stated in the notice on the bottom. This is guide is done for fun, and to give out help for people who just want to level. If you dont agree with this type of leveling, simply overlook this topic ![]() On a side note, Im putting in some new finishing touches to the updated guide, along with this i have been studying for finals as this is finals week. i was agree with LR that something should be done with the demonic and lava crypts. Making them both like burning lava would do just that. That is all i was saying. Hollen this guide would do me no good as i am 100 just posted for the above reasons i said. |

Folks, this all boils down to psychology in the context of computer gaming. In fact, this was covered by Richard Bartle, the co-auther of the first mult-user dungeon (MUD) circa 1978, in an article he wrote back in 1990 that analyzes MUDS and the people that play them. The full article can be found here: HEARTS, CLUBS, DIAMONDS, SPADES: PLAYERS WHO SUIT MUDS It's an interesting read for those inclined to understand the unlderying motivation of people who play MUDs/MMORPGs, the dynamic relationship between player types, and the delicate balancing act that goes into designing a given game in order to appeal to all or a specficic combination of player types. For the lazy, I'll save you some time. People generally display aspects of the following 4 motivations with an emphsasis on one particular motivation that defines the majority of how they interact in a given game. From the linked article. "i) Achievement within the game context. Players give themselves game-related goals, and vigorously set out to achieve them. This usually means accumulating and disposing of large quantities of high-value treasure, or cutting a swathe through hordes of mobiles (ie. monsters built in to the virtual world). ii) Exploration of the game. Players try to find out as much as they can about the virtual world. Although initially this means mapping its topology (ie. exploring the MUD's breadth), later it advances to experimentation with its physics (ie. exploring the MUD's depth). iii) Socialising with others. Players use the game's communicative facilities, and apply the role-playing that these engender, as a context in which to converse (and otherwise interact) with their fellow players. iv) Imposition upon others. Players use the tools provided by the game to cause distress to (or, in rare circumstances, to help) other players. Where permitted, this usually involves acquiring some weapon and applying it enthusiastically to the persona of another player in the game world." |
