Some PvP questions
#41350 - 12/14/07 06:28 PM

This morning I gave PvP in this game a try. I queued up my level 24 fighter and got matched up with a level 83 mage. I lost 3-7 but I suspect that mage wasn't really trying that hard. It's all good since I knew going in I was going to lose, but I wanted to understand how PvP in this game worked...at least in terms of first impressions.

My questions are as follows:

1. Defense Rating? Does it matter much for fighters in PvP. I'm getting the feeling that against mages, it doesn't matter at all. Maybe against rangers, but I doubt it since rangers will be pumping up their agility. So, I went in with lightweight +% movement gear with resists and +end. Is this right approach?

2. Ice bolt is pretty overpowered. Seriously. This seems to be a must have for just about anyone that goes into PvP. A lot of fights don't seem to last that long and you can debuff movement (big!) and attack speed pretty much the entire fight. Both my opponent and I had it and the debuff is very noticeable. Anyone fight w/o this? Or is there anyway you can resist against it?

3. Fear powers are annoying. I think a got a cheap kill once by spamming fear of gosh and fear-locking my opponent. Any way to resist fear? I suspect unnerving shout is just as annoying. I shudder to think what the ranger fear power can do.

4. Any way you can bind attack skills to something like shift+mouse click? I have a standard two button wheel mouse and if it's possible, a multi button mouse would be a significant advantage (if mouse keys can be bound to skill keys).

I'm probably going with another class if I give this a try again. I can see a fighter do okay, but with the movement debuffs, range is king. It's too easy to see that you can pop someone, debuff them and then run around a corner. They get too close, hit them with righteous stomp. Mind you I don't have a problem with this. Balancing for PvP (I've done a fair bit in other MMOs) is pretty tough.

Thanks in advance for any advice / answers.

1. Defense rating only works against physical attacks, so you are right: it means nothing against mages. Never played a Fighter, I wouldn't know what you might need in terms of equipment.

2.You could use the Ice Resistance spell and/or Ice Ward and/or wear Ice resistant gear. personally though, I don't find any of them particularly useful, considering you could spam Ice Bolt and it only takes one hit for the debuffing to work. Still, Ice Bolt isn't the only slowing spell, and is by no means the most powerful (though it is the most spammable).

3.Banner of Foolish Bravery can help resist fear effects. Unnerving Shout is not a fearing curse, it is a attack speed and movement speed debuff like Ice Bolt.

4.Don't think so. Is pressing a number key and mouse click, or simply mouse click, not enough?

well ...you have to understand that every attack has a counter ...ice has ice resistance ..from your gear and available skills ...the pvp in this game isnt planned out so that once class only uses skills all from only one class ...my suggestion would be begin to look into other class skills to find the counter to any attack you want to counter....also from your gear ....excluding fear ...however when pvp was released along with the skill to resist fear ..there was also talk of gear to increase that as well..i have not personaly heard or seen any gear yet that has that component ..but it doesnt mean it doesnt exist ..additionally ..str ..and defence will help agaisnt fear as well...also defence does help agaisnt physical damage typse ...so defence rating will help against gfighters and rangers ...but not mages...and the same works for mages ...for example ..the ranger debuff archadic blight ...will not help a mage hit u more or do more damage to u ...for it decreases defence rating ..with doesnt affect thier abulity to hit the target or do more damage ...but if u have a resist from your gear or as a skill ..than that will afffect a mages ability to hit u and do more damage

As I thought. Thanks for the verification.

It's not the ice bolt damage but the fact that it is a ranged autohit debuff that I'm worried about. Slowing a fighter's ability to close on his target and to slow down his dps by slowing attack speed is pretty phenomenal for a skill anyone can get. I'm just hoping there is a cap to the debuff and it doesn't stack.

Thanks for the correction on Unnerving Shout. I'm one level shy of banner of the foolish bavery, but it's good to know it has fear resists.

Skills like holy roller for example work off of a single mouse click if set to either your left or right mouse clicks, while if they are bound to a skill key number, it takes pressing the number and then clicking on the target with your mouse (two actions). I find I'd like to have cleave or holy roller bound to one mouse click, fear of gosh on the other and I'd like to be able to activate ice bolt similarly.

Thanks for the feedback. As I mentioned earlier, I'm aware that there are skills for ice/cold damage from ice bolt but I'm more concerned about the debuffs. I can see how defense could help in some situations but maybe only against fighters.

I think however as PvP matures, anyone who takes it halfway seriously will have ranged capabilities...I doubt there will be any pure fighters or even fighter hybrids when it is just easier to be mage or ranger. This isn't meant as a criticism. I saw PvP added in another MMO I was involved in and even now it is far from balanced (even though it has been over a year and a half since they added it). I only see pure fighters being viable only after they do some serious rebalancing of skills. Hopefully, the devs will hire someone with pvp experience in their background as balancing a game for pvp is quite hard.

If you resist an Ice Bolt, you will not be affected by its debuff. However, because Ice Bolt is so spammable and even high resistance isn't going to block every attack, it doesn't really work much. Perhaps if an Ice Mage is accustomed to fire off an Ice Bolt and immediately switch to something else, it might work, but normally it won't work very well IMO.

And yes, freezing effects do stack, but not if it is the same skill. Holy Roller and Unnerving Shout can stack their speed debuffs, or Ice Bolt and Holy Roller, or Ice Bolt and Unnerving Shout, but Ice Bolt cannot stack with Ice Bolt. And yes, there is a cap to speed debuffing: I believe it is 50%.

Oh! Now that's interesting. Thanks for that tidbit!

Something else: using Light in the Loafers can allow you to ignore all speed debuffs for a short time. You could also use Spirit of the Hare to increase your speed, which may or may not overcome the debuff effects.

and mages could use ring of fire to cancell your hare )))..

Also there are many fighters in pvp that are extremely hard to beat. They get there paws on ya and you dead. I can name 4 fighters i wouldnt what to meet in a dark alley yet in pvp. However all 4 fighters are either lvl 100 or have a lvl 100 and are extremely well practiced in the art of PvP.

I agree low lvl fighters with there clunky gear are still in somewhat a disadvantage with the range. Any good mage would have you down to nothing before even get hit once however your roller is key and goes far now as well.

I haven't seen any mages using Ring of Fire in PvP yet. Then again, I don't PvP much.

PvP has actually been well thought out on this game unlike most others. Every character has the ability to use every combination of spells and is not restricted to anything. You need different build depending on who ur fighting. I always carry and endurance armour set and an agility armour set as i am a ranger. also respec until you find the correct build for you. enter a free for all pvp practice game and muck about with ur char sheet and find out the best combo for what ur fighting what u want . every 1 has there own fightin style they enjoy sum like doing lots of damage in 1 go but slowly and others prefer fast damage which isnt quite as much so get familar to PvP and im sure ull do great
