Forced into a hybrid
#41338 - 12/14/07 02:24 PM

After this last patch with such increased mana costs for most of our spells I found that to be effective I had to respech and go deep fighter/mage hybrid. I'm fighting all fists of furry now and only really using my spells to deal with fodder. This isn't necessarily bad, but it's just not what I signed up for as a mage.

Strangely enough, I find a lot of fighter/mage hybrids complaining they were nerfed with this update. As a INT mage, I still find myself effective (increased spell range and damage, as well as increased efficiency of BSoL is not bad at all), the only difference is that I now have to drink mana potions, when previously I could breeze through dungeons without drinking one.

i was never big into hybrids so i cant really give you advice. I know hybrids in game arent quite as strong as pure classes.

The new bsol sure does help and like necro stated you will be drinking more mana potions but with the increased dmg a pure mage sure does very well for themself.

Essentially the same for me. Just drinking more potions. even at level 49 I can still grind out a level about every hour. The only thing I would add is that in order for me to make any significant gains in cash, I have to group for some insane boss runs since much of my profits go to pot purchases.

I had thought the same thing for a while until I bought new skills which I hadn't previously needed ie. Spontaneous Regeneration. All you really need to do is buy mana potions as Necro stated. Potions stack for non-members (5) and the stacks got bigger for members (10), so being a pure mage isn't actually weaker, it got a huge boost if you ask me.

What instance do you go to to be able to grind a level an hour, that's alot of monster kills and with the amount of monsters that knock down I'm on my [censored] for the first 10 seconds of every fight.

The key is finding a dungeon that does not have critters that knock you down. Conventional wisdom states that Demonic Crypts is the place to go for the AE mage to level however, I have found that for my playstyle Embercore lvls 5-7 is the best since it costs me less potion wise. In either case, nothing in these dungeons can knock you down and if you've specialized your build for a specific dmg type, I am shadow, you can plow through these guys fast. It's not exactly fun grinding, but when I need a level, I hit Embercore.
If you don't have Shadow's Gate waypoint, look me up in game. The name is Lucretian.

While Demonic Crypts may cost more in terms of potions, usually the drops should be able to balance out your potion use. If you want profit, boss runs would be a better choice instead of running dungeons. So if your goal is not to get exp and make a profit at the same time, then Demonic Crypts is the best place to get exp.

I myself am a hybrid and it is pretty nice. Any weakness my mage side has is reinforced by my warrior and vice versa. It great!

At the cost of losing efficiency on both archetypes.

Currently I am at lvl 23. I wear all high defence equipment but, put all my points in Intelligence. I have shadow lightning asigned to my left mouse button so when I hit things I either physically hit them or fire off shadow lightning. I sneak in a fire-ring when I can too. This seems to be working well enough but, I wonder after reading this post if I might do better wearing some of the purple mage gear I have in the bank to further raise my Intelligence and be a true mage. With the gear I currently wear I can stand in the middle of mobs and take very little damage. Right now I'm being lazy and killing Sissirat repeatedly then selling the drops - not a lot of xp but a decent amount of cash.

Does this make me a hybrid - wearing fighter gear while doing mostly magic damage? Does this seem like a good method or should I wear the mage gear?

Thanks for any comments/advice!

well if your wanting higher def but still have punching power try using ranger gear, still decent def and usually you can find +int on them, worth a try to see if it will fit your play style.

I've been doing a shadow mage also and found as much as possible I am using all +int items except for a high defense shield with +end like the Shardian. If you look up ThisNameTaken you can see this. The times I took off the shield I wind up having to use a lot more pots even though a second Brain on a Stick helps kill the mobs faster.

ya that is definatly viable, some shields can sometimes double your def, i like that idea, so obvious yet i never tried it, i am such a knob.,

Yeah, wearing fighter/ranger armour or a shield does increase your survivability, but personally I think wearing full mage attire and just running around avoiding hits works well enough. Your survivability isn't that bad if the melee mobs can barely hit you while the ranged mobs are running around trying to get away.

It also helps if you continuely change what skills your using depending on what resistances the monster have

Possibly, but usually when you go into a dungeon you should know what elements the monster are, and had prepared accordingly to it. I'd rather use the same set of skills throughout a dungeon than changing skills whenever a see a group of mobs with a different elemental type. There's rarely more than two elemental types in a dungeon anyway, so just use a skill the is not resisted by either and (if you think it is necessary) bring the corresponding resistance spells.

the patch nerfed endurance magi ie spell casters that have low intel, therefor a fighter/mage would be hit hard from this patch.

Well, I saw quite a few Fighter/Mage Hybrids complaining right after the patch, but Stephen helped most of them get back to track. They are hit, but not that hard I'd say.

The superimposed mana costs really hurts though. Too often do I find myself with no mana in PvP in the middle of a battle.

No mana in PvP is old news for Bluescreen Magi...

I was talking about Mage wannabes that use fighter gear and such when i was talking about Mage/Fighters

They said they fixed Blue Screen in PvP. I wonder if they really did... I should test it someday.

The money thing in my post was in the context of EXP farming. When I want to farm cash or drops, I do Rotgut on Insane like you.

As some of you may know I've been having issues connecting to the game ever since the July 2007 update and thus the last time I played was in June 2007... I loved this game and long time ago mages were just pure AoE masters with super low single dps... Do mages now have the ability to even come close to comparing with fighter and ranger single DPS? It was always a dream of mine... I'm still interested in this game even though I'm unable to play it

I don't know whether or not Mages now have the ability to out DPS Fighters/Rangers or not, but looking at PvP, I'd say it is possible.
