Am I missing something?
#41238 - 12/13/07 09:56 PM |
Apologies if this is posted incorrectly or is covered elsewhere. Is it just me (well me and at least 3 others I've spoken with) that thinks the changes to Retribution, Thickheadedness and 1H/2H Swivel Arm Action have really messed things up? I'm trying to work out how 'being able to use them more frequently', is better than having them last longer. I use 2 Handers and having 2H Swivel arm go from lasting 2 minutes at max level to only 30 seconds is definitely not an improvement. The same argument applies to the other 2 skills, all of which were working just fine and didn't seem to need improving at all. Rather than the hard won and paid for improvements to my character now I've hit 100, they are little more than novelties that wear off far too quickly. This is especially the case when you have to hunt down ranged mobs that steadfastly refuse to stand there and be swatted. Perhaps a little adjustment was warranted, though I'm yet to be convinced, but to drastically reduce the time in such a way seems a little extreme. I wonder if anyone else has any thoughts on the matter? There are some good changes to the game in Chunk#2, but these stand out for me as being almost disastrous. -------------------- Gurnard Lvl 100 Heroic Barbarian |

Understand, there are a few threads on this. Mainly with the ranger speed buff. I am giving them time before I say they are awful. So far they dont seem to slow down my killing much. -------------------- JoeB - Level 100 - Back to a Fighter where he belongs SirOldBottom - Level 42 - Shadow Merc Mearlin - Level 29 - Mage Dungeon Runners Map Build 0.95 |

Much lower level than you two (38), but I'm not wild about the changes either. I really didn't need those abilities for typical trash mob clearing in a crawl. When I did need and use them was for tougher encounters. So, while the cooldown seemed long, I did need the duration. Still early but it seems like a bit of a boss nerf, especially when trying to take a boss out solo. |

I also noticed the Ranger speed 'nerf', and that's worse than the fighter ones that I will happily concede. The difficulty I'm having is seeing how it has improved matters? As the old adage says - If it aint broke - don't break it! It's the wholesale slashing of all 3 of those buffs that I cannot understand, particularly with the logic that you can now use them more often (with associated increase in mana drain). That's like drinking beer in half pints because you can refill the glass more often, I think I'll stick to pints thanks. I too am managing without the speed, but then one has too. I'm fortunate to have a fairly fast overall 2H RB weapon anyway, but I'd hate to have to use something like The Gavel, or Mr Fracture Upper now. As far as Retribution and Thickheadedness go however, I feel they are now effectively useless. I also agree that with just general mob traffic it's not so bad, but against some tough bosses and/or a lot of healers and rangers these new improved skills are a serious drawback. Thanks again for taking time to reply. ps. I'll risk sounding like a child who has had their toys taken away and add; I invested a lot of gold in getting those skills maxed out and now they have gone and taken my toys away, lol! -------------------- Gurnard Lvl 100 Heroic Barbarian |

Well we appear to building up something of a consensus at least. Thanks to everyone for the input, I'm pleased to see it's not just me (& the people on W4 I've spoken to) feeling a might peeved. -------------------- Gurnard Lvl 100 Heroic Barbarian |

I agree. I use the 2H swivel arm all the time. I cannot even finish one mob before it is gone. Even if the cool down is shorter it takes much longer before the start of one use and the next because it only lasts one quarter of the time it used to last. It really stinks now. |

With the exception of bosses I now find I'm having to get along without 2H Swivel, Thickheadedness and Retribution at all. Even when confronting a boss the effect is negligible given the rapidity with which the buffs run out. 3 skills, now useless. As I said initially, I simply do not understand the rationale behind these changes at all. I wonder if Crickette or any of the other mods could enlighten us? Thanks again to you all for taking the time to reply. -------------------- Gurnard Lvl 100 Heroic Barbarian |

Quote: Herein lies the buff "rub", due to this game's attack mechanism requiring you to hold down a key you can easily have a hard time re-"keying" your target if it is in a crowd or behind a larger foe. Thus when you lift your mouse button in order to effectuate a key press for a skill then reapply the mouse button you can often get the wrong target and have a very hard time finding the original in all the mob mayhem. |

Quote: My biggest complaint on game mechanics. Very well articulated. It makes using anything OTHER than a left/right mouse click in melee limited. Only on GIANT boss mobs do I dare release a mouse key in order to hit a numbered ability. I'm still not sure why we don't have a toggle auto-attack. Would make things much more enjoyable in PvE stuff at least. |

The targeting issue had not gone unnoticed with me either and once again begs the question why did they mess with the buffs at all? I too would welcome a much improved targeting mechanic, if we could have that and a reversal of the changes to the skills I've mentioned, so much the better. -------------------- Gurnard Lvl 100 Heroic Barbarian |

Quote:Quote: Eh? Why not just press the number instead of using the mouse to click it? Although, my gripe is that numbered powers work differently than mouse click powers. Mouse click powers select and trigger the power all at the same time. Number keys only trigger the power but doesn't select a target unless it is an AoE, self buff or curse - powers like holy roller for example will not activate until you use your mouse to click a target. Very irritating. But getting back to the subject. I target by holding down my attack power (usually cleave) and then use number keys to self buff with stuff like 1H or 2H swivel, resistance powers, etc. |

I think thats what he was saying FS, not that he had to click the power but rather let go of holding the mouse button for the current attack to activate a power with a number key (you cant press the power keys while holding the mouse button down to use them), then you have to re-click a target to attack again, thats all. I find that part of using powers a little bothersome sometimes also , especially in boss fights like was said. it appears most everybody is in agreement about the general issue though, and thats a good thing! -------------------- "The future is in your grasp, be sure to reach for it before hands more determined and bloody than your own wrench it away." |

That was also my understanding of what was being said. This is of course exacerbated by the increased frequency with which these buffs now have to be activated. It is encouraging though that there does seem to be common agreement -------------------- Gurnard Lvl 100 Heroic Barbarian |

Yep, it is the releasing of the mouse button (which holds your targetting) in order to press a skill key (1,2,3,4,etc) that becomes the issue. In large packs, especially with different mob sizes, you can lose your moused target and struggle to reaquire while your buff expires... |

i agree with all of you, i mean it takes usally more than 30 seconds to finish off one or two monbs "combind" so you have to wait almost a min b4 you can use it again. i brought this up to stephen and he said so u can use it more bla bla bla. when i first saw it i did not see a improvement i saw a downgrade. -------------------- Punished lvl 70 non member pyromancer |

only thing i cant remember is, before chunk 2, were you able to hit a hot key WHILE holding mouse button and attacking, have the triggered key power/effect take place and then it stayed on target attacking? idk about fighter situation bc i used to have shadow mage and was using shadow lightning on rclick all the time with ring of fire on key 1. -------------------- "The future is in your grasp, be sure to reach for it before hands more determined and bloody than your own wrench it away." |

If they allow you to use hotkeys while holding a mouse button that would alleviate the problem. Otherwise, I would really want some sort of "sticky" target capability. Doesn't make sense otherwise. |

The problem of conflicting mouse and key presses wasn't an issue for me until they messed around with the duration of the buffs in Chunk#2. Prior to that, and using HDoL as an example, I could trigger all 3 buffs, fight 2 maybe 3 groups and then have to wait approx 20 secs for the remaining cooldown time to elapse before starting all over again. This was with the skills maxed out. I'm currently only bothering to buff for bosses and frankly that's a waste of time and mana. I cannot see any resolution to this problem short of reinstating the original time span or placing one of the buffs on L and/or R. ![]() -------------------- Gurnard Lvl 100 Heroic Barbarian |
