Your questions about the character XML feed
#41194 - 12/13/07 04:22 PM

This didn't belong in the Bugs and Technical Issues category, but since I'm answering questions perhaps this is the place.

What Stephen announced about the coming year:
Quote:

8. Publicly accessible XML data feed for accessing character data (inventory, skills, stats, accomplishments).

Ripper's question about it:
Quote:

Will we be able to call the data via web services into our own web pages or other applications?

Answer: yes. Right now the plan is to, first, get the information out on the web, and second, write our own example of how to handle it so that there is a pretty web page with your data. But regardless of what pretty web page we put out, the raw data itself will be accessible on the web, free for anyone to use. Nothing as complicated as a web service, just "XML for X character at URL/X".

Legendrunner commented:
Quote:

Like an image where your stats are posted in, you can put it in your signature on the forums, or throw around with it proudly everywhere

Response: yes, that's a possibility. It won't be available as an image you can pull from our sites, but it would be possible for a player (or anyone, really) to make it happen.

Again, all we'll have at first is raw data for characters, and the icon images used in-game (like for skills and equipment). Over the course of the year, more pizazz will be added, and we'll also increase the amount of raw information available to make things like leader boards work.

Something like... Where you can tell your own story, place info about yourself ect. Like a user page. You can make it a bit more original in overall way. Just a box to fill in information bout yourself. You know...

Aha.

Not that I know of, Dungeon Runners is not really oriented toward role-playing.

On the other hand, an enterprising player could set up their own site that both used the XML from us, and kept additional information (like character bio, sketches, and so on) to use for their characters, or to share with other players. And obviously we'd sit up and take notice if that turned out to be a popular spot for the players!

I think this is horrible, I dont want my name on any list for anything........the factthat others could look at thigs like that is a very bad idea in my book....but then again I am probbaly in the minority

Out of curiosity, Ghad, why? If you were a PVPer, I could see how other players seeing your build and gear might bother you, but you're not. Why does it matter if somebody else can see the gear you're wearing or your point allocation?

That asked, it would be nice if there was a toggle in game to turn off the "share my information" feature.

I am a PVPer and this does bother me.. I share my information with people that I deem it required... I don't like the idea of giving my opponents the opportunity to evaluate my items or my stats. I've worked darn hard to get what I've needed for battle. It makes it so that people can see that I will be a easy win for them. I don't believe that most PVPers would be happy with this either.

We need an OP-OUT selection. Please re-evaluate this item.

No, there isn't. Like you say, for PVE we don't see a reason to opt out, and for PVP, we feel it's crucial to have a level playing field in terms of information available.

Does this mean we'll only be able to pull information on a character-by-character basis? One of the benefits of having a web service is that one could query and display chunks of information, for example I could query a variety of "Top 10 lists", like Top Ten PVP Wins, Top 10 Oldest Characters, etc...

The character XML feed is just that... characters. However, we now have the infrastructure in place to do more, and we'll be expanding the information available on the web as we see the opportunity and have the time.

We can do that without web services, too - just different URLs for each piece. The effect is largely the same, except the entire process is much more lightweight. Top 10 lists are definitely on the way, and we'll see what else.

Now Anson, I personally dont mind it at all that people are spying on my stats. But I find that people have to be able to put it off. As I find it still breaking in someone's privacy a bit. Some people just dont want it, and we need to live with that. We are customers after all. And buying/using something anonymously should be a feature.. no?

We take privacy very seriously; we never let another player "connect the dots" between different characters on your account, or between your forum account and your characters, unless you choose to do it for them.

Having ask a few people, apparently not alot (if any) understood what I was talking about, refering to the opening of the XML data.
In a previous game I have played, an announcement similar to the one stephen made stated they would open their XML to the players. Pretty vague yes but what that ment was players could alter or create UI windows. What this means is that when you hit "I" in game that window that pops up, the inventory window, could be altered to another configuration say "bag space" on left and Armor and Weapons on the right, instead of the way it looks now.

Here are two examples of how UI has been altered by players, these UI are for the same game.....

UI Example 1

And the other example of a changed UI.....

UI Example 2

These are character specific as all these files are located in a folder that contains your characters game intormation such as preferences and options and things such as friends list, settings, etc etc.

So you can see how I was very excited only to be confused when the character sheets came out.

Anyway sorry for any confusion.

I do know that, and appriciate it. But when you know someone in-game with name Poop, you can still lookup the name Poop and it has nothing to do with your account name. Still it breaks in your privacy as it is your character, and you maybe got a build you want to keep for yourself. I still find it breaking privacy a bit. I am for an option to put it off.

I understand, but if you could right-click on someone's name and get the same exact information, do you think you would feel differently?

What I mean is this: I think what makes this seem unusual is the fact that you have to go to a website and type in a character name. Perhaps this is what gives the feeling of "googling" someone, although the information you see is still strictly game-related. Just food for thought.

I do understand where everyone is coming from, including the pvpers. Just know that when the DR dev team decided to do this, it meant they also had to show their own character specs as well

I don't see it as breaking privacy at all. The information that's provided doesn't tie to any of my personal information like real name, address, credit card number, age, etc; it ties to my character, which resides on DR's servers and doesn't really belong to me.

I've got a question about the information posted. I was able to write some php code that parses the character data and gives me the info in an array (also stores it in a database so i can cache it). I decided to run it on a personal friend's character and it gave me strange numbers. for one, i know for a fact that the particular character is level 27+ but the info I see (in both the XML sheet and the info i'm parsing out) says his character is level 17.

I'm wondering if there's a latency between the live server and the XML feed, or if the XML feed is pulling directly from the live character database.

I would ask my friend if he had to delete his character and re-start for some reason but 2 other personal friends' characters are giving me similarly funny numbers. MY character's data is coming up just fine.

Neither. The data is written to the live database, and then replicated to somewhere the web servers can access it. The lag on this is very small, under 10 seconds (when a character is saved, which is at least every 15 minutes).

Per the announcement:

Quote:

Characters that haven't played since Chunk #2 went live may be very out of date, but it won't be more than about 15 minutes old for a character who has since logged in.

There was a bug with tracking the 'most recent' version of XML which was fixed in Chunk #2. Since just logging in is enough to fix it for a given character, active characters will be corrected as a matter of course over time - but we are probably going to make sure every character is up to date with our next patch.

Ok this makes sense, and the thought struck me as i was going to bed last night (just after I posted my question) that my friends hadn't been able to log in in a while due to either their jobs or the holiday season, and that was the only difference between my character and theirs.

Maybe if i'd read the announcement more closely...
