DoT stacking
#39748 - 11/28/07 04:12 PM

I'd like to get some clarification as to which DoTs stack, either with themselves or with other skills of the same element. The current DoTs are:

Poison Shot:
* Weapon-based cooldown
* Does it stack with itself?
* Does it stack with other non-Poison Shot poison DoTs?
* Does it stack with Poison Shot DoTs from other players?

Noxious Shot
* Weapon-based cooldown
* Does it stack with itself?
* Does it stack with other non-Noxious Shot poison DoTs?
* Does it stack with Noxious Shot DoTs from other players?

Gaseous Blast
* Skill-based cooldown
* Does it stack with itself?
* Does it stack with other non-Gaseous Blast poison DoTs?
* Does it stack with Gaseous Blast DoTs from other players?

Soul Rend
* Weapon-based cooldown
* Does it stack with itself?
* Does it stack with Soul Rend DoTs from other players?

Ring of Fire
* Skill-based cooldown
* Does it stack with itself?
* Does it stack with Ring of Fire DoTs from other players?

Only 2 I can say for sure without testing some is for GB and ring of fire they will not stack with themselves. This is obvious b/c the duration of affect is shorter than the cooldown. So it is impossible for the same person to stack these. Now as for if they stack with another persons needs to be tested or answered from a dev.

I know many of these questions have been around since both of us started ... and probably much longer. Drop me a line in game and we can see if can pull some numbers for them. Unless a dev would be kind enough to answer.

I'm hoping Anson will answer, since he just confirmed that all the DoTs were bugged and that a fix has been sent to QA.

I'm not familiar with the code that applies DoTs, but I checked with MarkT because it got me curious. Right now, most DoTs don't stack with themselves, but they do stack with other DoTs. Two Poison Shots, from multiple people or not, do not stack. Gaseous Blast is the exception - two Gaseous Blasts will stack. Two different DoTs will always stack.

Anyway, I need to go back into my programming cave and get some work done.

Great question Ripper and thanks for the answer Anson. I've been chaining Gaseous Blast and Ring of Fire for a while now and I would have felt really stupid if they didn't stack. Usually too busy when I pop them to check...

Thanks Anson - you've been on a roll today! Too many questions answered, though, and Stephen will think you're slacking on your coding!

Can you please ping Mark and ask him to peruse this particular thread? Your answer was awesome, thanks, but now I have more questions!

Different DoTs: Does this simply mean DoTs from different skills (Noxious Shot + Gaseous Blast) or from different elemental pools (Gaseous Blast + Soul Rend). The first appears to be happening (which would be great), but it's tough to confirm in game with overlapping numbers that are all the same color. The second is definitely happening.

Weapon-based DoTs: If DoTs like Noxious Shot and Soul Rend don't stack with themselves, what's the point in having weapon-based cooldowns, especially with bows? With my blue non-member bow, here's a pic of the skill description with both the weapon-based cooldown time and the DoT duration:

Noxious Shot

Obviously, the cooldown is less than the actual duration of the DoT. If I have this mapped to an attack key, I'd just be wasting mana if the DoTs didn't stack. Also, if I were in a group and there were multiple rangers using Noxious Shot, we'd be wasting our mana. This changes the dynamics of grouping tremendously. Imagine having two fighters, each with their main attack key slotted with Soul Rend, in a group. In order to achieve maximum carnage, these two fighters would have to decide who was going to use Soul Rend and and who was going to use something else. This seems unnecessarily complicated, especially in a game that thrives on jump right in action and pick-up groups. In my opinion, there are two solutions:

1) DoTs should stack with themselves

2) The weapon-based cooldown should be changed to a skill based cooldown. This solution would help prevent soloists from wasting mana, but the group issue would still exist.

"Compiling!"

The questions you're asking came up when I was chatting with MarkT earlier; it's not perfect, and we're thinking about it, but I can't adequately address them myself

Lol! Sounds like we're on the same page, then, in our thoughts about these skills. Thanks for taking all your time to review and discuss, both with us and with Mark!

I worked for a little software company here in Utah this last year. We all worked hard, but played hard, too! Every day we had at least one game of darts or dominoes in the break room or a round of ping pong in the executive office, then back to work! Oh yeah, I also got them hooked on lunchtime DR (at least for a while)!
