End build mages
#39158 - 11/18/07 03:54 PM |
Stephen was recently on thr PVP server and was commenting on a future adjustment to spell cost on autofire spells. He said that high endurance mage builds are hugely over powered. Most people that complain dont bother to load resistances and when you fight someone that does its very hard to kill them before they go through 70k mage hit points. Mages dont have an ablative melee shield. We cant hit opponants standing inside us but we can be hit and are spells miss moving targets 90 percent of the time. I think if spells were to cost more then they should be more accurate and we should have a high mana cost low refresh ablative spell. What I think would be a better method is to tie agility to spell accuracy and intelligence to spell power so that like fighters, mages would need to make real choices. Simply making spells cost more may just make mages unable to kill opponents and survive with the above mentioned conditions in play. |

lets think about this a mage needs 5 passives against a fighter/ranger.. bmi, gym, book, mental, banner.. so that leaves 3 left.. heal self, hare, shout, mana regen, light in lofters, tele, retribution, resists, or self buff spells to choose from, with left and right being your dmg dealer.. fighters/rangers dont need 5 passives 4 at the most before you get into resists and 4 is being kind if you say agility to land spells when then there needs to be alot more items with intell and agi out there as i know there is a few but not many and NONE rbws for a mage i said this before and will say it again mages who use blue shield shouldnt be PVPing to begin with |

Clamm I agree with what your sayng about having a need for all the passives and i heard that mage targeting was going to be changed so maybe agility to targeting isnt needed, I think though that simply making spells cost more isnt the answer. If they make it impossible to survive by forcing us to spec more into intelligence then we either need more survivibility through melee ablatives or scaling damage through intelligence or the mages will suffer with the current state of pvp. I think though if people just loaded resists there wouldnt be any problem to begin with. Alot of folks just take their pve builds out to pvp and lose badly then they cry about balance. They bring no tactics no resists and the same spec in pve they use to run dungeons and thats the first problem right there. But I think that if they want to bump mana cost up then they should scale damage to intelligence otherwise another problem gets created. |

Both of you make excellent points to which the powers that be seem to miss. The system isnt really unbalanced. Simply, most people dont know how to pvp. I am not saying this a knock but more of a truth. Endurance is the key in pvp the way they have it now regardless of build. There are a few high endurance rangers..viperus and bitburger come to mind that are next to imposssible to kill. I tested last night a viable warrior build with 90k hps. The mad melee mastery skill made the lack of agility a moot point. As pointed out, you cant pvp with 10k hp and win against anyone that has pvp'd with any regularity. -------------------- Trample the weak. Hurdle the dead. |

exactly a high end ranger is very very hard to beat... example... shout, fear, trigger happy frenzy, pluck to death, toss in a few poison shots and its extremely tough to beat now ya thinking you are a mage you can use shadow word, stomp to keep the ranger away.. sure sounds good but where ya going to fit that in the skill bar as far as a high end fighter well they tough too but too many fighters rather see crits of 20k and die quicker then crit for less and live longer and hopefully win.. tie that all together with resists and its balanced.. i learned from asking and i wouldnt consider myself an elite pvper but i enjoy it and only if people could understand that hps wins in pvp, this discussion wouldnt even be happening |

targeting is going to fix?? ever try hitten a moving target with ice bolt or fire bolt.. gotta plan ahead as i think its pretty hard as it is to hit a moving target.. a few deeks or shimmies and i just wasted mana and gave my opponent valuable ground ahead of me |

I believe all-endurance mages are a dominant strategy because most players cannot deal with them. No doubt that resistances can make a huge difference in these situations. Without strong resistances, an all-endurance mage will rip you a new one. I'm sure most of you agree. ![]() The way the game is currently balanced, high health is a requirement to do well. Characters that do not focus on health are at a significant disadvantage. The coming changes are meant to give you more tradeoffs to choose between. Going all health as a mage will make you have to use your spells more carefully than you do now. With mana costs as they are an all-endurance mage can fire off spells with reckless abandon. Can a game be called "balanced" if there's only a handful of effective builds? I guess so. Ro Sham Bo is technically balanced... it's just not very interesting. We're just looking to give more choices validity. We'd like to ensure that choosing other attributes in your build won't totally screw you over in PvP. Any extreme attribute choices should have some significant drawback. All of them do, except for endurance. As for missing with your projectile spells... you'll have to learn to aim them better. It's currently pretty hard to use aimed projectile spells to keep enough damage on an opponent to stop them from healing up. We've reduced health regen 33% and increased the health regen start time to 10 seconds in this build to help ranged players keep their opponents from regenning. This should help a "kiting" character be more effective. We've also increased the speed of Ice Bolt to aid in catching runners. The mana cost increases will be noticed, but they're not unworkable. By all means, keep your all-endurance builds. Just make your spells count. We've done a lot more than just change some mana costs, however: Fear has been adjusted as well. Characters will no longer get stuck running in a corner. If you get stuck, you turn around. Blue Screen of Life now becomes more efficient as you rank it up. This is realized through a decrease in the damage inflation when applied to your mana. We've also further reduced the agility needs of warriors. The "Way of the Roo" skill now passively increases melee attack rating by 100%. The thinking here is to help make hybrid melee characters more effective. Warrior-types have three attributes that they must focus on to be effective (agi, str, end)... this helps alleviate that. Warrior armor has also been significantly improved this build. The defense ratings on all warrior armor (scale, place, crystal) have been given big boosts. Ranger skills have been given some love too. They can now be aimed like mage skills... letting rangers lead their opponents. As a ranger, it's pretty annoying to have a character trivially avoid any skill shot you use. If you can predict where they're going, lead them and let them have it! Damage and resistance buff durations and cooldowns have been adjusted as well. They now last less time and can be activated more often. This should help mitigate the dominance of resistance skills in PvP. The duration of Light in the Loafers has been increased to 15 seconds at all ranks. Its cooldown is now decreased as you rank it up. This helps slow-moving characters overcome their disadvantage more often. I'll post a full set of patch notes in the next day or so. steve |

stepehn an all endurance doesnt have enough mana to use at a whim.. against alot of the good pvpers i have to use spontaneous after every fight or run as fighters or rangers with mana steal take it all.. so basically what you are doing is going to let fighters/rangers load up on mana steal items and completely screw over the end mages.. great job there.. plus you are going to completely make fighters stronger.. stephen let me ask you something?? have you ever PVPed against ASWunreal (spell sorry ASW) or ahno (lvl 24 fighter) or even wreker?? they all extremely tough to beat even for a end mage at any lvl. so basically i spent the past month farming end gear for my mages for a complete waste |

Quote: Mana steal items do not remove mana from the target. They convert a percentage of the damage done into mana. Against the vast majority of opponents, all-endurance mages have no problems winning. Sure, if you focus on resistance gear and skills (or max out health as well), you stand a chance, but that's pretty much the only choice. Quote: Yes, I play PvP regularly... and have fought Aswun and Wreker. I don't recall fighting Ahno, but I probably have. My mage is all-int... with about 10k health in PvP. I've beaten Wreker with this build before. Never could hurt Aswun enough to kill him because regen is so strong. Best I could get is a stalemate out of him. In general, my mage does pretty well in PvP. Quote: I doubt it. A high endurance build for mages is still viable, just not as easy. You'll have to have a bit more intellect to compensate... or use your spells more effectively. Don't be so hasty to pass judgment on changes you haven't even tried yet. Be sure to jump on PTS when this build is ready and give it a whirl... then let us know what you think. steve |

well i wrote and erased this post many times thinking about what ya said steve and to make my point as i didnt mean in anyway to flame sure all lvl 100 mages are overpowered as i will agree with ya on that.. 85k mage with 8k mana will win due to the gear bonus they farmed so many hours for.. if they have any pvp experience; most important thing in this matter is to have fun and make it better however as i also have a lvl 25 mage who is extremely well geared for his lvl.. i need all the hps i can possible muster up against lvl 100s.. stephen my first post wasnt about lvl 100s was about low lvl end mages who go up against lvl 100s.. my lvl 25 is better geared then my lvl 100 but my lvl 100 has an easier time beating everyone but other lvl 100 mages or very high end rangers via viper/bit/lr.. but double the mana on shadow lightning and any groups will run ya dry on mana no matter if you have 20k mana. I know you will say use gas or fire well sure but do you have the gear on to use those spells for the bonus or do we need to farm poison gear just for groups? Fire i will leave alone as if there isnt enough of fire bonus in game already.. I also understand being higher lvl should have an advantage over lower lvls however i can almost guarantee you there isnt a lvl 25 mage out there that is better then me (not to toot my own horn by any means) or has better gear then i do.. the only 100s i cant beat it isnt because of skill, gear, and knowing how to pvp.. I just think you are going to completely hinder the low lvl mage and make most people lower lvls play fighters i also understand being lvl 25 is extremely hard but that is why i do it as if i wanted easy fights i would play my lvl 100 mage more often but in the same aspect ANY good pvper would know to use resists/wards when fighting a mage and with the skill bar popping when gates drop will help em all out alot In conclusion i did in fact duel Jay on his 90k fighter and he won against my lvl 25 each and every time.. I didnt even kill him once and no other fighter can say that as i beat all the lvl 100 fighters in a match on my 25.. I may not have a winning record against ASW but i have beat him before and its always a good match |

steve you make it sound like end mages on the one hand are invincible and on the other hand that if opponents used better gear and resists the fights would be fair. So with that you buff resists refresh, nerf our mana pools, boost warrior armor, increase their ability to stun with holy roller, lower our mana regen and health and then claim thats its going to make it more competitive for the poor tank with 5000 defence 6000 attack and 80000 hp. Hows is this gonna be fair? Thats going to make pvp a mage slaugther fest. Half the time i'm continusily snared by roller or a curse and spirit of the hares broken as soon as something touchs me the other half the time the opponents are running through me to stand inside where i cant hurt them but they can hurt me. I think your going to break mages in pvp with this. Ive got 3 pure class toons a warrior a ranger and a mage and between them i have 400 wins in pvp. I've found a way to win with everyone of them but with whats changing in the new patch I dont think mages stand an icecubes chance in hell. |

holy chit.. i just read the chunk for next build.. Are you friggen kidden me.. Way of roo increased, defense increased, attack buffs shorter recast time, holly roller reduced in mana, dmg reflection in half, dmg resists recast time shorter.. Congrats you just made everyone be a fighter now.. Sure you said yesterday and you thinking this now.. Mages have to play smart and by smart you mean Kiting.. So lets think about this whole kiting thing.. there is 10 skills so lets just say you have your dmg on left and right mouse. You need the 4 passives: gym, bmi, book, mental... so that is 6 right there, then you need shadow word and stomp, thats 8, now there is 2 left one being hare since shout or ice wont slow anyone down with the 15 seconds duration and quicker recast time on LoL, so that leaves one spell to choose from.. tele (to get out of dodge), heal self, no room for dmg buffer or dmg reducer buff, no room for retribution (which is cut in 1/2 now) and no room for shout.. not to even mention those who use blue shield on a side not somebody posted about only playing the dominating class.. i agree end mages were strong but that is also due to the fact others didnt use resists to the fullest extent and well sure if you farmed for a straight month to finally get the gear you been searching then why not play it.. Not everyone has no job or no school and can play all day farming for a new build.. which is what every mage will have to do after this chunk Congrats to your fighters as the most you will ever get off me is a draw as they made us mages cowards who will have to keep back peddling and just nick away at your hp pool. giving my 2 cents on this... from my own experience, classes are quite balanced for the moment in pvp with slight advantage to mages. I am a ranger 100. Against good end mages of my lvl, the best i can do is tie a match. I need res buff to survive and buff only last 60s, and i need to put 2 or 3 buffs in my hotbar as a good mage would switch spells. When low in hp mages are fast enough to dodge and run and are very very hard to catch. So i can tie at best. Against good warriors, games are pretty more balanced, and also often result in ties or very close wins. My last games with buddy aswun were so. What i think about pvp upcoming changes (my opinion again) is that i'm quite happy to see mages more accessible to win against (again i'm speaking of good ones), but have the feeling that warriors will dominate. Current patch was good for them and i was happy to see them back in town and have good games agaisnt them. Now it seems another story, with even greater AR, inflated defense, etc. Not complaining anyway, we prolly need to test some before saying that a new dominant class emerge or whatever. Only thing i would like to keep in this game is diversity and creativity over dominance. In two words Good Games! -------------------- Viperus Lvl 100 Ranger |

I'd suggest that you play the new build before passing judgement on the changes. It's a tough call on when to release patch notes just because of this kind of preliminary feedback. I come down on the side of giving you patch notes as soon as possible. It's unfortunate to see emotional responses to these changes before they're even tried out. I see why my peer producers are more guarded with their information... ![]() As for warriors being overpowered now. I don't think the balance will be in their favor as much as you believe. They do have increased hit chances, but hitting a low defense opponent is hardly a problem with the current game. We've increased the defense rating of warrior equipment and given them better melee attack rating, that's true. But the regen changes will help mages deal with them from a distance more effectively. If, as a mage, you want to stand next to a warrior and go blow for blow then you'll have to improve your defense rating in some way to compensate. Again, the increased mana costs will be felt, but they are not unplayable. An all-endurance mage will have to adjust strategies and get some regen armor to help compensate. Or, feel free to put some more points in intellect to make the difference. Light in the Loafers has been improved, but it's not much better than it's current "live" max rank. Really, this helps the lower-level players get more use out of the skill. I believe the duration is now 15 seconds with a 30 second cooldown at max rank. We're not stopping our work to make the game more balanced. We will continue to add skills and adjust powers into the future. Our goal is to enable as many valid strategies as possible. To do that, we have to disrupt clearly superior builds. This is a long-term iterative cycle that we're dealing with here. It's gonna take us dozens of iterations before we're "done". steve |

Here's what's wrong with (pure intel) mages (The way i see it) We rely on mana for everything, we use BSoL so we dont get one-hitted, we use mana to attack and mana to escape. when a mage runs out of mana in PvP our shield dies, we cant shoot back and we cant even use telly or SoH to escape... Hell, we cant even use the mana re-gen spell to get our mana back if it dies. My point: Mages in PvP with BSoL are SoL. Also if this sit carrys over into PvE mages will be limited to cursing and running in groups with Abby and might screw up any hopes of doing HDoL 3 on insane.. Maybe because I play many different characters and only really play my level 100 to help others and to farm occasionally. So yes although changes in game play will not affect my level 100 greatly it will my other characters which include mages and rangers. And the questions I was asking you were specific to PVP hence why they do belong in this forum. Not wanting to answer them or not able to I understand. -------------------- JoeB - Level 100 - Back to a Fighter where he belongs SirOldBottom - Level 42 - Shadow Merc Mearlin - Level 29 - Mage Dungeon Runners Map Build 0.95 |

Quote: The changes we're making aren't just for PvP. They are for PvE as well. We could have easily made them just for PvP, but the design team believes these changes will make the PvE game more interesting. I agree with them. If there's ever a change required to PvP that would ruin the PvE game... or a change to PvE that would ruin the PvP game then we'd keep those changes separate. If there's a change that makes them both better then we're gonna do it! It's a no-brainer from our vantage point. ![]() steve |

well Joe i think your quite right on your two specific points when it comes to a mage. Sadly this will impact the ranger that i am. Then i can understand somehow mages frustration as they're impacted by other changes. Trying to have constructive discussions, i have made a proposal in an other thread. It aims only at pvp and would only impact pvp. Any other ideas would be welcome. Let's put our energy on that rather folks. -------------------- Viperus Lvl 100 Ranger |

Joe: You're very much welcome to post your opinions on PvP here. Feel free to draw comparisons between the PvE and PvP rules as well. If you think some PvP change is gonna mess up the PvE game then let it be known! I want to hear everyone's opinion on PvP and PvE. Not just the hardcore PvP and PvE players. Shout it from the rooftops, Joe! steve |

Quote: I'd define more interesting as having more meaningful choices to make. More loot choices, improved monster AI, faster decision cycles for skill use and more limited resource management are all contributors for "more interesting" gameplay. Of course, you may think it's not all that interesting. We'll soon see. ![]() steve |

Ok I decided to read up on the forums about the debate of end. mages and the new patch of how we are going to get nerfed, So I decided to pull a few tests of my own. This is how it goes, for build 1 I pulled a jaysherman(no offense jay) with 90Hp and 8kmana I went up against a level 30 ranger and he took me down half hp, the second test was a 10kHp build with 65k mana Using SoL i went up against a 67 ranger and the results were terrible.. he was an AS ranger and took down my mana in a few seconds leaving me completely vulnerable with out my SoL and on top of that I couldn't use any skills or anything to even run away as darth stated. I also read in the next chunk SoL will receive a enhancement to decrease the % of mana it deflates which is usefull but your always increasing the mana cost of my spells 'significantly' so my thoughts are why not take the cost of SoL off because if my Hp are being nerfed hard and im relying on SoL which is deflating my mana then using a spell that literally eats away my mana, Mages become completely useless as many have said. -------------------- 100 Mage |

Quote: ------------------------------ This is exactly what i was saying that would happen, Now we know that BSoL is getting improved efficiency. However, this is ONLY as you rank up. This leads me to believe that lower level mages will be totally screwed in PvP and that unless there are new items that give a MASSIVE boost in intel higher end mages will have a very tough time of it as well. End note: I'll bet that mages will quickly vanish from PvP after the patch and I dont really want to think about fighting Abbadon (Abby) in PvE as a mage; As it is I cant solo him on anything higher then formidable and even in a group have to use lots of mana pots to keep my BSoL running, (FYI I'm a 8.6K HP mage with 44.7K mana with 1.5K fore resist with no buff/ward and 3K even with both {as I fight}) All of this makes me think is that mages especially low level ones are going to be easy pray in PvP and also that mages will be reduced even more to running around the edges of a fight casting curses to aid fighters / rangers like some low level leech. Those are my thoughts on all this, Darth. PS: thanks for telling some n00b that I'd powerlevel them when I logged on Nolan ![]() -------------------- TLA Clan Leader ¤Ψ«Ŧħę Łээţ Ąśşãŝśïñş Ćłąй»Ψ¤™ Welcome to hell, here's your Pitchfork of Fireproof Taint I have nothing amusing to say here |

yup they screwed the pure int and pure end mages completely.. have i tried new build yet nope i havent but have i been farming for fighter gear YUp you bet i have.. Darth i really dont like you and you know that cause of what transpired the other day but you said alot of good things for those that use BSOL as i wont and will never be one of those mages.. (well i retract that as i dont wanna say never)) ... liker viper said end is the big issue not mages, yes ASW runs around 50k hps and i am using him as a example of a lvl 100 fighter but he chooses too and can also crit for 25k which hurts alot.. (sorry ASW for bringing you into this as you are silent in this topic) yes the low lvl mages will feel it big time and why i will prolly stop playing this game.. Mark my words if this next chunk goes like i believe it will be you can say the end of hang/clamm.. |
