How did you come up with your name?
#38403 - 11/04/07 02:45 PM

So, how'd you come up with the name(s) you're using now in DR?

Myself, I just browsed around for things ranger-like, and being shrouded seemed like an accurate quality for one.

The only one I really Picked was Bird. Copy and Reader were attempts to get something past the named taken without using more than one word , and to have a little fun naming my characters.

I first created this name cause Blender was taken on the site I was registering on.

Then I dicovered that it was also the name of a Norse Heroine. Which I thought was cool.

I was surfing the net to find out about Blenda and I came across a page in Norwegian. I couldn't read it but I came to the conclusion the Svint and Salmi were also Norse Heroines, so I often use those names too.

Mine are all character names from William Gibson's 2003 novel "Pattern Recognition". Mama Anarchia is the female villain and Cayce Pollard is the hero. Gibson is mainly know of course as the author who coined the term "cyberspace" and for the film version of one of his stories "Johnny Mnemonic".

I don't really have any consistent naming convention, but I do have fun picking the names. In fact, what I enjoyed most about City of Heroes/Villains was the character generation, including names and biographies.

UlrichWolfsbane - inspired by Ulrich Von Lichtenstein from "A Knight's Tale", but with a "ranger-y" surname.

UberAlice - a play on the words "Uber Alles" in the German National Anthem. Uber Alles means "above all else". It fits Alice's personality...

MedievalKnievel/EvelMedieval - obvious references to Evel Kneivel, world famous stuntman. Used for fearless (sometimes stupidly so) fighters who rush into battle.

DeadeyeDick - was looking for something "Old Western-ish"/"Ranger-y" a la Quickdraw McGraw (yeah, the cartoon character). Since I picked the eye-patch model for my character, I thought DeadEye was appropriate and I picked "Dick" for the alliteration.

Hyacinth - it was pretty

DancesWithN00bs - it was funny

etc...

As to my board name, Ripper McGee - that was simply the first character I ever created on my account in City of Heroes, years ago. It's the board name I used on the CoH Boards, continued to use here and now use as a pen name for reviews and other things.

Tet - been using that name since I first started gaming. Not exactly sure where or why I picked it up but it has various meanings. Most notably it is the Vietnamese New Year. Also means "good hidden within" in Hebrew and relates to the number 9. Means "head" in French... mmmmmmmm.... head. In ancient Egyptian is meant "tower of Assur" (Osiris) or "backbone of Assur" (Osiris) as translated by E.A. Wallis Budge. Since his translation it has become known as "djed".

Any way you look at it... Tet is an ancient word and I like it.

I've been using the name Discord since I was on such services as Compuserve and Q-Link back in 1985. Q-Link became AOL.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compuserve

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_Link

The name came from the Illuminatus! Trilogy. And essentially the whole Discordian concept.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illuminatus%21

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discordian

Yeah, I did the whole BBS/300 baud thing. I still have my Commodore 128 and a 1541 floppy drive. It probably still works, although I'm not sure if the 5 1/4 disks still retain any info.

My ingame characters right now are a fighter named Splunge (from Monty Python). Discordianna (a mage) and Mybad (a very young ranger),

Since you are probably wondering, I'm over 100 years old, okay? Now all of you kids, get out of my dungeon!

And as an old fogey I resent having the title New Kid under my name. I haven't been a kid since I was... well... a kid.

Heh, All that history, Im bad at history. Thats why my names dont go that far back in the time.
ALL my names contain one of the folowing words:

- Legend - Not very original, but I just simply like it.

- Solo - As in "I can do everything Solo", I like doing things for myself, I think tis because when I screw something up I blame myself.

- Agility - Goes bit back in time. On age 9 I started to Breakdance, upto age 13. Afcourse You dont come with a name like Piet jan Klaas (Dutch name btw, not my name), everyone has got a nickname, and I was famous all over the area and I was amazed; Even on parts of the country. Simply because My agility goes that far.. well... Ask for it if you want to know, its sick, plain sick.
So thats why I was called Agility.

- Eqel - Very rare and not used anymore, funny enough at 9 years old I didnt knew how to spell Agil, from Agility. Thought it was eqel, so yeh, stupid me.

These are the names that I have used for quite a while. The personal enjoyment that I got/get from them while gaming has been and is enormous. Used VOIP for UO as well as L2 and it is just a hoot sometimes when you are calling marks or someone else is.

Crickette obviously came from Cricket, which was my COH name. By the time I joined Exteel they already had a popular pvper named Cricket, and people were getting confused. That's why I decided to alter the name a little bit.

Cricket came from two things:

1)Cricket was the name of one of my dogs growing up. My grandfather called him that because this pooch liked to hop around a lot, out of pure excitement. So I've always sort of connected the words "Cricket" and "excitement" due to some childhood experiences. Yeah, I can't explain it, it is just one of those things. And when I was joined COH community, which was my break into the community field, I was rather excited

2)Cricket is obviously an insect, when I was a UO GM I also had an insect name. Different insect, though. It just felt fitting to go back to the old insect theme.

Artek, Rufgar, Argel (and even Zorlar) are names that just came to me as I was staring at the Character name box.

I've been using Zorlar since Ragnarok (early 2000).

Artek was thought up during by Shadowbane days (shortly after Ragnarok and I used Zorlar there, too).

Rufgar came to me when starting my Dwarf Paladin in WoW. Rufgar just sounded like a dwarf name to me.

I made Argel up when I wanted to start my mage in DR.

I've been a rapid fantasy fiction reader since jr. high and enjoy most Forgotten Realms, Salvatore, Piers Anthony and the like, so I guess it's kind of ingrained in my persona by now.

S'okay I'm 10 years younger than Discord:) so that makes me 90ish

First on-line game I played was on GameStorm. I played MPBT Solaris 7 (multi pleyr battletech) which is where Bogey started. was in 3rd lance and we all took the designator 13 at the end of our name. Hence came
Sgt.Bogey313-=CCAF=- and after 4 years later when EA bought out Kesma Studios and trashed BT and Legend of Kesma Ret.Col.Bogey-=FC=- got buried.

Steele was a what's you <insert type of name here> name genrator:)

Well. I normally use rather "odd" names in most games. Things like 3EggOmelette and such since the old names I used in FPS games became way to common. I wanted something a bit more normal for DR. That is if you can consider me or what I do as normal.

Pullus is Latin for Poultry or Chicken.
Exitium is Latin for Destruction.
And my other guy, Biscuts... well, we go back to that food thing again.

Tiqon was my second char in Silkroad (the first online game I played, im pretty new to this online gaming).

I really dont know why I used it. I have played RPG pen and paper style for over 20 years and names just keeps comming to me I guess.

I liked Tiqon. Its short and pretty easy to remember. So it stucked.

I have later found out that a painter is named Tiqon, I think (I cannot read spanish).

My wife always use the name LotusSama, also from her first char in Silkroad. Lotus... well she a girl, you know flowers and stuff and Sama is something you call a royal I think, in japan (yes she has high thoughts on herself , AND luckely for me, not reading forums!). Dont hang me up on this, its something like that anyway...

To the player who said he/she could not read a text from Norway. Give me the link, Danish and Norwegian (spelled wrong I think, im too lazy to check) is almost the same, almost , so I could help you understand if you like.

Cirk (pronounced with an s sound) is simply a anagram of my irl name, even with over ten years of table top rpg under my belt, i still have a hard time with names, so i stick with the simple.

I'm usually called Mr. Pointless or The Pointless elsewhere, which comes from my belief that there is no meaning of life or grand reason for us to exist. I tend to use The Pointless for RPGs and MMOs like EVE or Guild Wars.

Since DR doesn't like spaces in character names (ARGH! ), I simply named my Fighter "Pointless".
My Ranger on the other hand, I just ran the word "eagle" through Babelfish to get the Dutch word "Adelaar" for him.

I forgot the stoopid scroll again...
