members vs non members
#37773 - 10/24/07 02:55 AM

this game has lots of potential but wow just wow what a HORRIBLE system it has for the non paying people. this has to be the worst system of ALL free 2 play games. no bank, the items for non members are complete garbage. its just ridiculous the differences between non paying and paying customers. such a cool game and yet so many little people playing it ever think of why that is? yes paying members should definitely get more perks but the differences are 2 overwhelming. my suggestions either make it fully p2p with the same prices you got now or give the the non members a little bit more freedom because this is just crazy.

suggestions!
this game has lots of items not giving non members access to a bank or at least a limited bank right theirs drives away a lot of players

non members should in the very very least be able to equip the yellow colored stuff. making it rare drops for non members, and the gears higher then yellow should stay with the Members only

i myself have a Member account and a non member account and i can tell you its way unfair just by letting non members get their hands on yellow armor would go a long way for this game.

im tired of seeing soo little people playing this game. it SHOULD have a few thousand people playing not a few hundred, and all this is because of the unrealistic membership package.

either make it fully p2p so everyone can be equals or give the non members a little bit more freedom. the worst thing in a game is to be 15 levels higher then someone and their gear pwning yours in every stat. thats a complete turn off and this game i would gurantee would do way way better if its either fully p2p or the NON Members can get their hands on at least yellow gear.

i wanna know what everyone thinks on this issue. lets keep it civilized no flaming everyones opinion counts.

There was a previous post, which can be found HERE, that indicates how non-members will be able to use some of the better gear including all yellows and some purples. This is accomplished through an in game ad system which will only be seen by the non-member accounts. Just look in that thread for a reply by Stephen.

In my opinion, the ad shown in the screen shot would not hinder the game and place it in an unplayable state. I am sure that over time, the ad system will be tweaked and modified, including after it's implementation into the live game. All that we can do is be patient and wait for the Devs to get things rolling. At the point the non-members will have so much more opened up to them.

Edit: Sorry I posted the same link as Sharigan. When I read the OP, I first thought of that thread and did not fully read the reply that was made.

I too have a non member account. And the difference between it with its blues and Blenda with her purples and rainbows is not worth mentioning.

The word resist pops up slightly more often for Blenda. But she still gets stunned, poisoned, burned, frozen and cursed by shadow magic.

Unless she uses spells, which are available to non-members.

I have played nonmember accounts well into the 30's without problem. I found that running in HDoL is a lot harder as a nonmember but this is mainly due to the non stackable pots. The lack of bank access was a major incentive to join.

Personally I think that this was a great business model, it gives away a taste of the game play for free, while at the same time showing all the advantages of the full game. Also it allows you to play the complete game if you are so inclined (we do have a few nonmember level 100 characters).

1) Advertising for non-members is incoming, which will give them some, but not all, of the current member benefits. A link has already been provided.

2) I disagree - I actively play both member and non-member accounts and have no problems with the current setup. The game is still fun, more non-member loot drops than member loot ( statistical sample), and blue gear has the same base stats as yellow, purple and rainbow gear, but just can't be used until a higher level (the real "benefit" of member gear is that you can use the same stats at a lower level - example)

just an addition to Rippers comments with the real benefit. Some modifiers are not available on nonmember gear which will affect how you make your build. Specifically for me would be Health and Mana Steal, but also resistances and % chance to Stun.

Agree that it is very playable though just a little different.

I won't touch on the parts about non-members equipping yellow and the addition of bank space coming with ads as JoeB and Ripper have that covered.

However:

I'm going to say the following knowing full well that you've paid for a membership. I can't say it's really aimed at you, though. It's aimed more at the "give me more for free" crowd. Kudos to you for being a fellow paying member.

I'm curious that you find $5/month an "unrealistic membership package". I mean, really, to solve all the problems you've mentioned, you just have to pay $5. About the cost of a single trip to McDonald's and about 1/3 the cost of a certain other popular MMORPG. for those without credit cards, NCSoft sells gaming cards that can be bought at GameStop.

In this game, the "free" membership is there to give the player a taste of the game and, should they choose to live within the "free" confines, a way to play for free. However, this "free" membership is really a bait to get people to pay for the membership.

If they hand out too many non-member benefits (i.e. non-mebers getting bank slots and access to yellows; I will say that I like the addition of stackable potions, though), the incentive to pay goes down. If paying membership goes down, eventually, the game stops.

This isn't a flame by any stretch, so please don't take it as such.

A couple of points regarding this comment, specifically:

1) There are tens of thousands of total players (perhaps even over 100k). Please remember, however, that this game is designed to appeal to the casual player who may not have much time. As such, there are many, many players that login for sessions that last less than an hour. As such, there's a very low concurrency rate.

2) Per Stephen, at the meet-n-greet, there are 14,000 paid members (up from the 10k he mentioned on the boards a couple of months ago). In-game advertising will definitely increase revenue, especially from free players who can basically be equated to shareware users...
