Pass the love on to others.
#37337 - 10/16/07 07:33 AM

Karma you got to love it. Why am I posting this you may ask? Well I found that little thing called karma. For the longest time I was a hoard with my rb's even the ones that was to low or not for my fighter and I wasn't going to trade them cuz of no safe way to trade and the only one you can trust is your self.
Next thing I know my bank was full of junk that I could not use so I grabbed it all up and started to hand it out to people that could use it. Seen as I'm in world 2 every one can use rb's.
Then I started to think. Why am I doing this? Then I was like screw it not like I paid for the rb's and I had fun looking for them. So I kept handing them out but on low key. as not to make a mad rush for my rb's. Next thing I know they was gone.
So I started to look once again. And I did meet a lot of cool people when handing out my rb's. So I started to group helping them out leveling and looting.
The next thing I know some of the people that I helped out and hooked up with some rb's started to look for me as a true friend would. This is karma taking hold and now it gets better. POW rb's and skill books just start dropping for me like crazy. not every run but I will tell you that I am getting at least 2-3 rb's a day and 1-2 skill books.
As I was doing before I was handing the rb's out in my groups when I got 1 that I couldn't use that would be the first place that I looked. Now you may be thinking that its not karma its just you know more people in groups get better loot then solo. But its not just drops that are crazy its the way people look at you and at least 5 people have just walked up to me in town and said here catch(rb).
and just last night some one walked up to me and gave me a Uber stick now I'm not a mage so no good to me but a friend that I was grouped with was so I gave it to her. Not 1 min passed and POW a rb drops for me and it was a good one that matched my level and was just what I was looking for.
Now that's Karma

Wouldn't it be cool if you did get some sort of "karma points" for helping out noobs and other lower level characters? We have been throwing around a "sidekicking idea" similar to what CoH has for quite a while now. Sidekicking would allow players of very different levels to have their character be "magically" shifted up (or down) to another player's level so they could play together. In the case of higher players dropping down to help lower level players I could see having some additional incentives put in place so we get more players helping out the noobs. Here's a "I just woke up and haven't had all my morning coffee idea:" in the case where a player sidekicks down to a lower level, players would accrue "karma points" while they spend time helping lower level noobs. For each second in combat the higher level player would earn some "karma points. 'X' amount of "Karma points" would increase your loot drop chances by 'Y' percent at your level when you go back to your normal level. Every loot drop at your level would automatically spend your "karma points." The greater the difference in level, perhaps the more "karma points" you could earn. So the longer you sidekick (especially lower level players), the more karma points you will earn to improve your loot drops at your level. In the case where a player sidekicks up to you, well, you might get some "karma points" but since you are at your level you aren't exactly getting penalized and they are getting to see higher level content at a lower level. Pretty much a win-win for both players in that scenario. Obviously, this is a pretty rough idea, but here's the main thing to take away: if you help lower level noobs by sidekicking down you would get better loot drop rates at your level. Sound cool?

Perhaps we could even hand out "karma points" for giving items away... although that sounds like it could be taken advantage of... I will have to think more on that one.

I would be curious to hear some thoughts on this. I think it's great that higher level players are willing to help out the lower level folks. It seems worth it to reward that behavior, and who knows... players might even meet more cool folks just like stonedfighter did.

The sidekick idea could be interesting. Especially if there was an incentive for the higher level players. I know I would do it a lot more if I could level down to them so I didn't feel like I was doing all the work for them.

Karma points for giving away items would probably be abused. Something like if an item is given to you it couldn't be sold for a certain time period, or points wouldn't be given until the item is bound to the person. I could see people giving away all of their loot just to get more karma points trying to get rainbows, or giving it to one of their alternates for the same reason.

Just a few thoughts of mine on the subject with 1 cup of coffee, but not nearly enough

I'm bang alongside this idea. I have a simple policy: RB items shouldn't sit unused. As I'm playing a shadow mage, there are exactly 2 RBs I want (Dark Ring and Sissi staff) so I've ended up handing out lots and lots of RBs. I started by giving the few I'd collected to the small handful of friends I had at the time, but I quickly found myself with more RBs than friends, so I started giving them to friends of friends. These people quickly became my friends. I think that it's not so much them thinking "hey, they guy can do something for me, so I like him" as "hey, this guy seems cool and I like that" so you wind up making good connections with people. You also don't have a dozen RBs to spam in world chat to try and look cool, so you really win on both ends.

As to the rewards for doing this (and my reason for posting here), we should really be looking big picture. I'll frequently join lower level groups and do some boss runs with them, give tips and tricks I've learned and other help as well as handing out RBs. I don't expect any direct reward for this and, most importantly, I don't want any. I do those things because it's the right thing to do, and I firmly believe that this attitude is contagious. A player who comes up through the game seeing higher level characters display that sort of courteous, neighborly and generous behavior is infinitely more likely to do the same when they're high level. Over time, this builds exactly the kind of community that I want to be a part of: a selfless group of decent people who're in it together to have as much fun as possible. That's the payoff.

I realize that this sounds more than a little Mister Rogers-ish, but by Gosh, I think it could work!

I like the idea of helping newbs.. being one in this game right now and having been one in the CoX world.

I think sidekicking down is the way to go.. In CoX, most people don't downward sk unless it's for a task force as the reward/risk isn't all that great. Here, there really is no risk for dying so the percentage increase drop thingy is really pretty cool.

Maybe it's because I am still new, but I have a question about sidekicking upwards. I've noticed that the only way for me to get an obelisk in my teleport list is to actually use it. So, if I am level 10 and I sidekick to someone who's level 30, how will I be able to get to their dungeons?

That is easy, and already can be done. When you group with someone who has the obelisk already you use the "go to" function and then click on obelisk.

I think the Kharma idea as described by Mark would be abused, but it made me think of a slight tweak to make it feasible. There has been talk about adjusting pvp so that characters scale up or down for the battle, allowing a level 1 to battle a level 100 on the same level. If this concept were used in the Kharma idea there would be no need to introduce another monetary system. Loot should scale during the kharma game time too though. Say a level 80 goes to help clear dew forest with a level 5. He could find stuff at his own level without upsetting game balance, since any time he goes to dew forest he gets scaled down. This whole concept would also prevent a group of level 40's from calling their level 100 friend to mow down everything in the boss farms. If the level 100 were scaled down automatically, then he'd have to work just as hard as the level 40's to kill Rotgut instead of clearing the room in 30 seconds or less.

I'm with you 100% on this. I don't think a reward should be handed out for this at all. The shear gratification of knowing that you truly help someone and that they truly are grateful for what you have done for them is the payoff in my eyes.

Personally I think scaling down and getting a bonus drop to your level is a great idea. It will help people who have friends that have just started playing, with this it wont be such a hinderance to the higher level player since he wont totally be wasting his time.

Also I dont think it will be abused since the higher level could simply kill at his own level and get the drop rate rather than scaling down, and you will still only get loot around your characters current level so you wont be set for life or anything.

I dont agree with scaling up though, ruins a bit of the replayability and "competition" feeling if you can simply jump to any point in the game.

i am mixed about this whole idea.. yes its nice when high lvl players help out low lvls ones but its not all that common.. sure i have helped out a ton and prolly given away hundreds of rbws in my time but the same can be said about all high lvls.. the thing is once you help others out and see how fast it goes its like cocaine to them.. they wantcha to do it all the time.. and i will help if i had the time and not busy with my own group.. and the only reward for having a high lvl would be boss loot % go up? no offense here but i rather not scaledown and just run them through in 20 seconds as its faster and we all know the faster the runs the more rbws..

There was a -growth in the closed beta for some time, they used it in pvp when you got "shame" on you. This can be achieved by giving up a match, its kind of a recognisation that you are a coward lol
I dont know but I think its around -20 to -25% when having shame on you.

This is part of the Yellow Belly debuff for being a stinking coward (although I know if you get disconnected due to network issues it also occurs) .

I think it would be hilarious if it was part of rainbow jewelry. Would cause an even larger discrepancy between characters sizes. Maybe a range of +/- 53 ... would then have people who only came up to my knees instead of my waist .

i agree i wanted to be a small character after seeing them in pvp.. they can do this still with the gear but instead of making them slower just make them all black like death if they are coward and leave pvp.. or have some silly thing over thing over heads like the quest givers but only something foul so you will no the difference and keeping with the humor in game.. this is my opinion.. mind ya all i am a yankee fan.. have a ballon on top of the heads when they leave pvp that says red sox sucks..
