I'm basically brand new, but an allure of any game I play is the opportunity to play by myself... and so far that's definitely possible.

With that said, what would be the best fighter build (stats and skills) to play effectively by myself?
Or what things would I need to keep in mind and aim for as I go along?

I would assume being by yourself one would want to focus on survivability, as even if you're mowing through mobs pretty easier, it's still easy to get overwhelmed.

Some people go pure strength, I like the str/end build myself; good power, defense, and nice health.
I just get agility based jewerly then, for good accuracy.

Skills, whatever you want. Gaseous blast is a nice aoe if you need one.

try this build, 3/6 end 2/6 agil 1/6 str 1/6 intel

gives u a good defence,some damage and a lil mana for skills =D

i am a lvl 38 fighter and i would go 45% str. 45%end and 10% int.

I'm only a level 21 fighter but I'm already noticing that when I switch out some of my agi gear my miss rate goes through the roof. Atm I have about 140ish str, 90 agi/end and 30 int all modded and it seems to work for me, any lower agi than that and I'd be pretty annoyed at how often I was missing. Keep in mind this is my build while using 2 1h weapons and I don't really like 2h weapons so I can't comment on it for that.

I'd recomend a ration of 2 Str, 2 Agi, and 1 End. You may be able to skimp on the Agi and drop some more into End. I'm level 36 now and it's working for me. Don't put anything into Int though. If you need mana later just get the passives from the mage trainer.

I have to say that the 3-1-1 method works great for me and I was soloing hdol at lvl 30. good things to look out for is items with Agi and end. I use twin 1 handers and plow straight thru the mobs and some times I do get overwhelmed but if its not a challenge then its not fun...as for int. unless your going to be a battle mage dont put any in int.

seen as your new keep an eye out at all times for new gear it will change from day to day at least till you hit lvl 100 it will.
skills I use butcher and soul rend as 1-2 on the mouse 1 hand swivel, redemption, thick headiness, and divine, as my self buffs, offensive gesture to keep the baddies close and off my boys, and all ways looking for that super rare skill that only drops from a kill the book of stupid str....or something like that..

When you say 3 1 1, whats the 3?

Specifically it would be:
3 STR
1 AGI
1 END

out of curiosity one day i respec'd my fighter to put all points into end. at lvl 17 i had about 7k hp and was having a great time getting xp without ever using a health pot. granted fights took quite some time to finish because i had little str and agi in gear. very fun to try but i wouldnt recommend it 100% of the time.

I think the best solo build is to go with 2 very fast weapons, high defense armors and get some health steal on them and just pound away at your enemys :P

I've made it to level 16, and up until recently I've been doing the 2/2/1 build and I have been piling on the AGI. I think at one point my agility was 119. Recent gear upgrades have swapped that out for endurance.

Always when I ask about points for a fighter, I pretty much get that all 3 (str, agi, and end) are equally important. There are arguments for each.

My initial thoughts came from previous games. That a fighter should focus points into Endurance and let your gear take care of everything else. ...granted that's not what I did, mainly because I could never get a straight answer.

Really, what it boils down too... is just have fun.
I might keep going with the agility (which comes from my WoW rogue days). While I might not be hitting very hard, I'm hitting a lot of with 2 Ludicrous 1handers, and they're hitting regularly. Hopefully I can kill things before they kill me.

Also, I dont know that I've seen any real difference between using a big, slow 2h, and 2 crazy fast 1h's. My damage output is about the same. As opposed to a lot of little hits, I'll just have 1 big hit that does the same damage. Kinda like a 10:1 ratio that does the same amount of damage in the same amount of time.

Like, I was farming Sissirat tonight with 2 1h's, when I picked up a nasty 2h. So, I tried it again with the 2h and the whole thing was over in about the same amount of time.

On your thoughts about 1 handers vs 2 handers:

I have been picking up some dragon fins that have high damage and around +40-+50 AGL that I use just to do Sissirat or Snow Cheif runs. With a few mages, I can focus on bosses and let them clean up the fodder. Works for me, but I use 2 one handers when xp hunting...

I'm lvl 45 fighter. For damage per second, boss farming and HDoL, nothing comes close to a hammer. Other weps barely dent enemy health over the same period of time. Big slow crushing 2H weps are the best I've found. Only use I see for fast 1 handers is if you want to help power lvl a n00b character quickly.

I am new to the game at lvl 6 Fighter and also use the 2/2/1 method. It worked well for me in Diablo II and seems to be working in this game as well. Also I like the 1 handed weapons with a shield but found a good 2 handed weapon I want to try and see how I like it when I'm a high enough lvl to use it.I like being fast to get more hits in

The best weps that I have found and that work best for me is: 2 rb's one called skulliosis and one called the fabled one.the stats are vary high and its got life and mana % steal on 2 insane fast weps. my attack speed is at .29 min/max damage is 1000/3000 with a 4500 attack rating
