A popper saved my ranger
#37134 - 10/12/07 07:48 AM |
After playing a separate character as a mage for 40 levels, I realized how pathetic my Venom Mercenary was. My endurance was too low, my shot speed was marginal and I used so many potions that my profit per run was minimal. I finally hit level 53 and was able to use a popper (ludicrous speed rifle) I had in the bank. It is best without the poison shot on the left button (at least with my slow computer response). This weapon has significantly reduced my need for elemental protection, mana, mana potions and health potions. I am having a great time with my ranger again - briefly as a Shadow Merc and now an Arcane Scout. -------------------- Gelum - Level 54 Shadow Merc CrimsonMoon - Level 40 Pyromancer Thormageddon - Level 8 Brutish Barbarian 4/1/0 Rainbow Drops |

I got to stick with Plate Piercer as the ultimate bow. It is really hard to beat those double stats. By the 50s it results in 100 more agi or more no matter how you slice it. In general the casting side of rangers ends up being dubious I think. I recently got a fresh poison ranger rainbow and I am going to goof off with a build around it. However a plate piercer ranger with everything that can be spared in agi, criticals, and attack speed is a force. The demon spitter rainbow is amusing because it lets you chain cast without any mana which is useful around normal strength mobs. However, even so when pressed for dps in a group I go plate piercer. I actually havent got a popper to drop. Only a couple plate piercers. but I have seen the stats and havent been that disappointed. |

Grats on finding something that works for you. That is probably the most difficult part of the game. As for using a popper, or a shotgun in any form, you will need your bonuses to be for slash damage and not pierce. I have both The Judge and Duke Blaster in the bank. Now if I could just put together a decent suit of Slash gear to use with it while maintaining the high Agility aspect. -------------------- Pullus, Level 100 Ranger Exitium, Level 60+ Mage |

have noticed that the +slashing is harder to come by than the +piercing for good ranger gear. I'm looking for the ludi popper mythic but am having problems gettin the gear I would need for it. I love my popper. It's basically the equivalent of the new balanced Plate Piercer, except I get the AGI bonus instead of the INT/END split. Here's a screenshot that shows my popper and how I've maximized stats for either +Ranged or +Slashing damage types: Popper + Gear Popper damage on char sheet Please note, I have TFF up to show the maximum DPS I get from my popper. It's 5341.67, btw... My only problem is that I haven't found anything to replace my popper or much of my gear in several levels. -------------------- ~Ripper Complainers of the World Unite NOT Ripper in game... Look for "of the _whatevere_ Newt". I saw some of this on a vendor and at level 76 it had +73 Agi and +110 to slash attacks. I bought it and equiped my Duke Blaster. Damage did go up with the Slash bonus. Will be looking for a suit of that. Sad thing is that I am not sure if the 3k DPS with a .20 Attack speed will out damage a 7k DPS with a .50. Will have to do some testing. My main concern is that using The Judge, as slow as it may be, can land crits over 15k when set with pure agi and no slash bonuses. -------------------- Pullus, Level 100 Ranger Exitium, Level 60+ Mage |

why wouldnt a 7k dps weapon outdamage a 3k dps weapon in your mind? Think about the units... damage per a second... Assuming your calculation is accurate. If a 3k dps weapon out damages a 7k dps weapon overtime, I assure you your calculation of damage per a second was suspect. |

Well, in my mind, the DPS listed on the character sheet is just that. Damage Per Second that is applied to the weapon with the stats, skills, and bonuses you have applied to your character. It does not factor in the targets defense, bonuses, and such, which can drastically alter the true damage per second produced by the weapon itself. During an extended boss fight, having the 3k DPS (Base) may be able to bring the boss down faster then the 7k DPS (Base). There is always more to it then the numbers shown on the character sheet. As for my calculations being accurate. The numbers I used are rounded off versions of what is shown on the character sheet. As for how I figure out which one is better, that is simple. Kill the same thing 10 times and clock your kill speed using each weapon. If one always ends up going faster, use that weapon. It is no longer a matter of calculations being correct but a matter of time itself. When I am farming, I honestly don't care which hits harder but more into which brings it down faster. And to be quite honest, they both seem to be ending up fairly equal. -------------------- Pullus, Level 100 Ranger Exitium, Level 60+ Mage |

DPS is not shown on the character sheet. DPS is your estimate on how much damage you do per a second. The number on the character sheet is damage per an attack and number of seconds per an attack. |

FYI, the calculation is: ((Min + Max) / 2) / AR = Average DPS Based on this screenshot , my calculation would be: ((436 + 2128) / 2) / .24 = 5341.67 average DPS I never equip a weapon without weighing the calculated dps vs. other factors, such as buffs, bonuses, detriments, etc... |

bah! Too much work for me lol. If weapon A kills the target in 10 seconds and weapon B takes 13, I will use A. Most of the time, I am just too lazy to even time it so I will use which ever looks best in the character sheet. Simple game, simple solutions. Quote: A correction might be that is an ~estimate~ of average DPS. Based on running around with my groups son leading the party sometimes it can get pretty far off actual. (the son is lower level which ends up skewing average hit location up in the spectrum exposing that average hit location isnt fixed on center) The rub or distinction is the estimate assumes that the distribution of hits are symmetric with center(min+max)/2 But my experience is the hits are not always symmetric about that location. Also the moniker average dps is misleading since it suggest that is reasonable estimate of dps however we know missing is the reality of miss rate which is also not constant but that tells us real dps is much lower. Just something to keep in mind when comparing dps sources. (PS devs have said melee/rangers should get some of the resist fun of mages; however spells dont miss... so now we have to deal with average hit location in the spread, average miss rate, and resist damage type mobs. I am suspicious...) |

I am like Ripper and I always do the DPS calculations prior to selecting a weapon. From 78 to 94 I used the same purple weapon because of the dps output. For me the ideal weapon has +agility and both +% damage, +% speed that results in the highest DPS. I am also an enormous fan of poppers and I am still looking for the perfect level 100 popper that will replace all rainbows in my inventory. This is how I personally see current ranger weapon selection in Dungeon Runners. Weapon Selection You can choose guns or bows in a variety of speeds. There are more rainbow drops with ranged +piercing damage than +slashing or +ranged damage so if that is a factor grab a bow. I personally prefer guns, over bows and with 1 exception would never wield a "grandma" shotgun. Shotgun The saddest of all ranger weapons is the grandma shotgun and unless you are attacking a single target there is almost no reason to own one. I do farm Abaddon with [The Judge] Rainbow shotgun, but that falls into the single target exception category. I also have an attack rating over 24,000 so I rarely miss Abaddon, but otherwise all shotguns needs to be reworked. Pros - Big, big hits Cons - Misses cripple your dps. 1 miss every 3 seconds is a 25% reduction in DPS. - Using skills while holding down the left-mouse button just doesn't work well further reducing your combat effectiveness - Shotguns require a very high attack rating to be useful at the sacrifice of health and mana pools - Spending .73 seconds to kill a single fodder with a 10k shot is wasteful. Then when you have 20 fodder to kill it takes FOREVER. Crossbow Crossbow drops are so common most players believe that rangers get more loot drops than any other class. The truth is most crossbows go to the vendors even when rangers get them because of poor ranger stats (Vilespitter RB for example). Pros - A variety of speeds and damage ranges - A variety of cool visuals - There are more ranged +piercing drops than +slashing or +ranged - Best ranged weapon for a non-member until after Chunk #2 Cons - Ho hum DPS Repeating Bow These are uncommon drops, but have a speed rating of ludicrous. Pros - Higher dps than their slower brethren - Cool visual - There are more ranged +piercing drops than +slashing or +ranged Cons - Purple or higher drops are either very rare or non-existent Popper Though classified as shotguns they have a ludicrous speed rating and when fired resemble a laser gun. Pros - Stat for stat they have the highest DPS of any ranged weapon - It is easiest to use additonal skills (gaseous blast, ring of fire, etc) with a popper - You can mow down fodder quickly Cons - Drops are rare and ones with good stats very rare. - They are all purple drops (or non-purples are extremely rare) - Finding complimentary gear with +slashing is harder than +piercing |

I have a duke blaster, but I don't want to give up all the +agi for +end and +int. I currently farm Abby with the Judge then switch to the Duke Blaster for everything else and it kinda gives me two builds. |

i'm also doing DPS calculations when selecting a weap, and in my own experience i have found nothing better than purple bows so far, with %speed, %AR or %dmg (well at least since the pp was nerfed). I liked much using popper at a time, it was quite fun, but never found any that could match good bows in DPS. i hope ranger's weap rbs get renewed some time as most are crap imo. -------------------- Viperus Lvl 100 Ranger 1253 pvp wins - finally ! |

Bringing a melee weapon to a ranged fight doens't make those that bring ranged weapons cowards. Just because you want to plug your lil thread doesn't mean you have to insult people who have a different playstyle than you by calling them cowards. Particularly when you are in the rangers forum. 'nuff said bout that. I typically use xbows. I'm not sure I've EVER found a decent popper @ any lvl. Edit: Draco, your attempt to use post count to put me down falls on deaf ears. I read the post, one good contribution does not make your calling rangers cowards in their own forums to plug a non-ranger thread justified...and that is regardless of being 'gamer advocate' or 'joking'. Actually I have to get up and personal many times which can be a challenge. If any trash gets in the way its taking me longer to kill intended target. If I go too long without damaging said target they begin to regen HP. Best examples are when I ran Vergrim or trying to kill a fearing caster. Mobs were always inbetween me and Verg causing me to hit 1 or 2 and them exploding. Melee surrounds you forcing you to run to said caster which in part they run away. Ranger requires finesse on certain content which I enjoy. -------------------- Altstar: 15 RB Hunter Ranger 97% :: Fighter 97% :: Mage 98% My Gear & Wishlist :: L10 RBs for trade! |

ok you pushed the button... i'm obligated and do apologize to all rangers and FPS fans for this. Takes a lot of finesse to sit and snipe, RUN and snipe some more. Oh speaking of time to kill a target... isn't that was the devs intended? Your basically circumventing all there hard work... that says cheater to me. Next logic step here is to call somebody that circumvents hard work to get there way quickly sounds like a cheater to me, sorry all but there it is. |

Where's your mother's wit now? Please, shut up. You don't have anything good to say so don't say anything. You talk much but say little. And before you go on your little tirade about "new kid", do some research about who you are talking to. To say that someone who snipes from a distance is cheating is sheer folly. Just because in your head you can't picture playing with that playstyle does NOT mean it is cheating. Tell you something, bud. I pvp'ed vs one of the devs. Guess what he did? He kited. Shot at me and moved away to shoot some more. Did he cheat? I think not. You are a self absorbed self righteous self promoter who thinks way too highly of himself to be of much use to anyone. Mother's wit, my left foot. Oh, and as for your advocating...put a sock in it. The players don't want you to speak for them. I know, I'm a player. I'm fairly certain the devs don't need you to advocate for them either. I think I may bring my old siggy from another forum to this one. The clue bat siggy, because Draco, you need to get tattoo'ed with it. /rant. Apologies to the forum for this, but he had it coming. |

To the original post - I found a lvl 23 purple BFG 9001 that was really nice. Even though it was slothfull I still had an AR of .53 and took mobs out quick. I quickly found a higher level xbow that was even better but I liked the BFG 9001 so much I have kept it around. I only wish the BFG's had more of a SCIFI sound - like a blaster or laser. That shotgun blast gets on my nerves pretty quick. I read your Guide Drac - Some parts were good and clear some illegible and confusing. A friendly suggestion - slow down a little and check your spelling/grammer. We all make mistakes when we hurry but as far as I know there isn't a race to get the most posts in. Using a Ranger Cheating? If that is the case why is there a ranger class in the game. IMO the classes have a role that when put together make a great team in the PVE game. Fighter pulls aggro and hopefully holds it, Mage kills in mass quantities or at least softens up the mobs, and ranger takes out specific targets. Yes Ranger - by definition - uses agility, stategy, and speed to hit from a distance and Fighters - by definition - simply pound to pulp anything within arms reach. Fortunatly we all get to choose what works for us and fits our style. Isn't it awesome. -------------------- Ipack - Level 30 Healthy Practiced Poison Ranger; still looking for a useful rainbow item. What's wrong with killing things from a distance? IMO, a ranged attacker requires more skill and strategy to pull off than a melee attacker... melee attackers are often augmented with high constitution, so they can afford to stand there and hack away. That doesn't really need much skill. Ranged attackers, on the other hand, often have weaker constitutions, and they need to rely on their range (and sometimes, speed) to evade damage while still dealing damage to their opponent(s). That's harder than the job of a melee attacker, I think, and therefore requiring more skill. Nothing's wrong with that... they have an advantage which is counteracted with a disadvantage. I don't see any unbalance, and definitely no cheating involved. |

Yes it is awesome. While your fighter is drawing agro and keeping the fight focused on him, my ranger can pick off threats from the fringes and someone else's mage can curse and burn the baddies for both of us. It is about creating a team and using tactics to win the battle. Any player or army that only uses one type of soldier, no matter how good they are will ultimately face an enemy that can and will take advantage of your weakness. Diversity allows for greater adaptation - This game doesn't really require it but I have seen how well it works when Rangers, Fighters, and Mages team up. And courage? I think in real life it would have taken a bit of courage to be an archer - they wore little more than padded quilted-cloth armor and leather or chain mail - if they were lucky - so that they could have the agility to use their weapons knowing it was quite likely they would be overrun by heavily armed and armored infantry. -------------------- Ipack - Level 30 Healthy Practiced Poison Ranger; still looking for a useful rainbow item. |

Fighters have more damage simply because they need to run to the opponent, and mages and rangers dont, but because of that do less damage. Now lets move on and get on-topic again. |

Yeah what Hihellogoodbye said. Funny I like both my ranger & fiter.. heheh fighter Now that I gotten a handle on the game My fighter is dealing out more damage in a shorter time, due to using spells. So Now that seems to work well for my Fighter Im checking it out with my ranger, & from reading, someone said that the Popper decreases the need for spell use, or you can cast while shooting?? It has nothing to do with skills. Yet some skills will decrease in cooldown when your weapon is faster too. So for example you can shoot poison shot with 7 seconds cooldown with a speed of .50, and with a speed of .30 you can shoot poison shot and have 5 secs cooldown. |
