WAYPOINT TABLETS - WRITTEN IN STONE
#37037 - 10/10/07 12:07 PM

OK...I get the whole waypoint scroll thing. But it is too short term.

I would like to be able to BUY a STONE TABLET....and on it...INSCRIBE a PERMANENT waypoint of my choosing.

I would hope it would only take ONE inventory slot...and that I could have as MANY as I want.

I know the dungeons reset and change....I just want the stone tablets to represent a "Boss Farm" waypoint that I can KEEP once I log off.

And wouldn't it be GREAT if I could have as MANY as my level or gold would allow?

Please please...I know SOME people want to work their way through the game....but the "true addicts" want to repeat their favorit runs...wherever they may begin!

I would have to say "no" IMO on this one. Reason is that it is not at all difficult to take port to the waystation entrance to the next higher dungeon set and just enter the dungeon that you want to farm from level 5. Then just run through level 5, 6 then into 7 till you get to the boss you want to farm. Takes me about 10 minutes to do that. It's a small price to pay to allow the devs to do more content (quests, items, skills) relating items than have to try and redesign how their waypoints operate and keeping the database on who has what where when someone logs off.

Plus, I feel that the "small price" of having to run through a couple dungeons to get to the boss is easy enough that making it any easier would end up negating the purpose of those lower dungeons. If the game becomes all about farming bosses and you can do them without having to deal with level 5, 6, and 7 then why even have level 1-4?

End in the end... IMO... I would have to say that getting to the boss is easy enough so I would vote "no" on making it any easier.

Just my $0.02.

Fully agree Tet. To many of the newer players don't do any quests and run very few dungeons. They only farm bosses and go from boss to boss as their level permits. Permanent waypoints would facilitate this way to much and IMO would degrade the game play.

I gotta agree with Tetness and JoeB here. This has serious potential for imbalancing the game system. The current system is very much in line with the idea of casual gaming. I'm a little surprised that this is something the devs want to implement.

If this gets implemented there needs to be something that is a detriment to the player who uses a permanent waypoint.

For instance (heh little pun there), the scrolls would be soulbound and extremely rare random drops. If you get 3 or 4 in 100 levels that's lucky. Also the waypoint that is set would be random too. It would simply show up on your obelisk as a permananent boss encounter waypoint. These scrolls shouldn't be something you can just buy at the merchant.

Or... make it into a quest that requires a player to spend a significant period of time running the lower end dungeons in a sequence in order to get what will end up to being a permanent boss way point.

Or....the boss encounters need to be a LOT HARDER across the board. Anyplayer using a permanent way poiint has 50% health and mana for that instance and the difficulty is set to insane with loot set to normal. Or limit the resets on the instance to 10 resets per 24 hour period.

In other words, there should be no free lunch.

Agree!! Can only assume they are making a change but not to the degree of the OP. The devs are usually very good at not implementing changes that severely change the balance of the game. Hate to make assumptions but will assume they thought this change out and the exploits that will be used.

Agree that the changes are usually well thought out so it is safe to say that this one is also. So I can't imagine that it is a free-ride past the run at all levels all the time.

I hope, anyways.

While I can appreciate a "purist" approach to the game...I don't understand why "balanceing" is so important. The game takes place with a maximum of five players. How THEY choose to play has no effect on other players. Maybe some people will shake their heads at power levelers or loot farmers...but live and let live. In PvP...the system matches people (or should match people) based on not only level but attack and defense strength.

My point is this...I don't think a GAME should be so proud of their "game philosophy" that they let membership and revenues fall off because they aren't feeding the NEED.

Dungeon Runners is addicting. People in the world are almost ALWAYS looking for BOSS groups, EXP groups, and LOOT groups.

People who are jealous or intimidated or look down upon these types of players may need to find another game that is more "balanced" or play with FRIENDS that share the same philosophy and keep shaking their heads.

I don't see what would be so bad to HAVE Boss Obelisks. It could be an option you could toggle, or even be a "ludicrus" setting.

Again...I do understand and respect the gameplay purists who tend to want more graphics, more dungeons, more puzzles, more story line. All great things. Always welcomed by everyone. But this game feeds the need and greed of immediate action and gratification for those who SEEK it.

Listening to world chat...this game already has a following of junkies. To FORCE those customers to embrace a purist attitude would drive them away.

Leveling, wealth and equipment should be tough to come by...but how many people would cheat if they could...START at lvl 100 with the best rainbow available and a billion in gold??? A LOT.

Maybe if PvP had an option that let you BUILD a character with given restricted attribute points and gold...let you pick your distribution and budget your purchases. That would level the playing field. Then it would be up to the developers to tweak classes so that the game is based on strategy and reaction time.

Thanks for your opinions. I appreciate in advance your respect for mine.

game philosophies are what built the games to begin with. If it weren't kept then we wouldn't have so many games to choose from because we would have one game built by suggestions of all players that would end up combining a WoW/LOTRO genre to an Eve genre with varying levels of interaction and no one would be happy with it. Simple fact is that some people are not going to be happy when it comes down to game design. Just the way of life. Now in this case whether that is you or me... well... that is up to us individually. I cannot control your happiness and you cannot control mine. And I certainly don't expect the devs to try. Mainly because this is a game that they play as well. And being as they design it and play it... the result of what happens with this game is ultimately theirs.

You have the first part right. DR is addicting. But I think a large number of us are looking more at the humor and social aspect than at loot or xp or boss encounters. Not sure what world you play on but on the one I play on we regularly have rainbows being given away. Even a trivia contest several times a week. Because of that, loot has taken a second (or even third or lower) place to the actual social aspect of the game.

Quote:

Jealous or intimidated? By what? I think you have the wrong impression about where this game started and what the philosophy is. Or maybe I and every other person who has been here since beta does. But it isn't about loot, or gold, or whatever. It's about having a good time. If that is what you are getting at then yes, if someone is jealous that others are having a good time then they should find a game that is less fun to them.

Quote:

Ludicrous setting? I can see that. Some sort of "penalty" (for lack of a better word) to using that portal. I just feel that it shouldn't be made that easy. In no other game have I ever heard of someone just going to an area and having the boss fight without having to do anything else. While I think DR is progressive in a number of ways... I don't really see just going to a boss fight as being progressive.

Quote:

Not sure that I am a "purist" but hey... guess it works. I just don't really see how taking a few extra minutes to get from level 5 to level 7 is such a huge inconvenience in the great scheme of life. I figure that if I have time to play a game then I have time to do what I want to do in that game. Same way with these boards. If I have time to respond to a post then I make sure I have time to try and be intelligible and understandable. (You haven't exhibited this but I have seen others that just can't spell to save their life and justify it by saying that don't have the time to do otherwise.) So, I hope that I am coming across understandably.

Quote:

Listening to world chat...this game already has a following of junkies. To FORCE those customers to embrace a purist attitude would drive them away.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by this. Every game forces people to embrace the game that they choose to play. If people are driven away then maybe it wasn't the game for them. I can think of a number of games that people are total slaves to whatever is handed to them and they love the devs for it. Gotta figure that one game (that shall remain un-named) that pulls in $120,000,000 each month and has a slew of devs would be more responsive to it's member base but it isn't. The players are zombies to the company and nothing more. But, to DR, we are fellow players. So here again... even though we go by the devs will in what they grant to us... they too are playing the game with us. If something does need to happen then they listen to us and decide for themselves. Here again though... can't make everyone happy. But if someone is on the verge and if they don't get something then they leave... well... it must not have been the game for them anyways.

Quote:

Leveling, wealth and equipment should be tough to come by...but how many people would cheat if they could...START at lvl 100 with the best rainbow available and a billion in gold??? A LOT.

Here again, not sure what world you are playing on but if these type of people are playing on a server that you are on then I can say that I am glad I don't play on that server. Seriously... from my experience we don't have that type of thing going on in World 7. So if you are seeing that... switch worlds. Come on over and join the fray. We are good people and welcome other good people. We are also quick to iggy so I think that is what keeps World 7 a good world. People get our goats for all of a minute and then they are on the bad list. Then they get no responses and then go away.

Can't speak for PVP as I don't really care. So, here's an area that doesn't affect me any. I might choose to go try it out once the update goes to the live server... but we'll see.

Quote:

Thanks for your opinions. I appreciate in advance your respect for mine.

I appreciate ideas. I really do. Even though when looking through my past posts on ideas it might not seem like it. My personal opinion is that for every reward there must be a little investment. DR asks so little of us as it is. Whether it be $5/month or viewing ads... yay. I personally don't see an extra 10 minutes of a mad dash through 2 1/2 levels to be a huge deal that I would need a work around to avoid it. So, because of that, my opinion is to have the devs work on larger issues (trade system, quests, etc) than possibly have to rework how waypoints are given and maintained. Here again, just my opinion. Nothing wrong with mine nor yours.

I guess, in the end, I understand that some people are all about that instant gratification of getting a boss done. For others of us, though... nothing earned is just that... nothing.

I respect your position on this and I feel that you respect ours (speaking for Joe and Mama here). So, this is nothing more than just sharing an understanding.

Agreed?

The amazing thing is how quickly it occurs. Most of the Vets on the world ignore around the same point. Often I will hold off just to laugh at the person trying to still talk trash and everyone else has already ignored them.

I haven't been around long enough to appreciate some of your comments. I apologize for my newness. KCMM is my level 76 character.

I will definately agree that the game is what it is...and people will either play it or not.

It seems we are coming at this with different expectations...and that's fine.

It would be best to make as many people as happy as possible...in my opinion.

As for the world...after hitting about level 15 I decided to subscribe. I'm glad I did. Since then I have been on "Members Only" - world two?

I'll try world 7 out. Thanks for the tip.

It's interesting...but I got the impression from the boards that the developers are really listening to its users. I found this refreshing and thought it was forth it to throw in my two cents.

Again...I'm glad I jumped into the boards. Thanks for the experience. It's all good.

Indeed, the devs are listening to the players. That doesn't mean that every suggestion will be considered. They will be viewed and they will be thought about. Some will work towards implementation... others not. But one of the things that is being looked at are the thoughts of many of the players when suggestions are made.

Well the more I thought about permanent boss waypoints the more I kinda liked the idea, it would be a really nice thing for a player to have. In essence DR is a "carrot and stick" scenario where every so often we actually get the carrot.

So... adding to the loot table isn't all that tough...why not add boss waypoint scrolls. Here's how I'd suggest this get realized in the game. There would be two sorts of scrolls. Named scrolls, Scroll of Sissirat's Lair, Scroll of Raputin's Kremlin etc etc. and there would be Wildcard scrolls.

These scrolls would only drop from Hero, Champion or Boss mobs and be somewhat rare, on the level of mythic items I would say. The chance of a drop from a Hero or Champ would be a lot less than a Boss. You are already farming the Boss, one of the things that may drop is a scroll for a permanent waypoint to that Boss' lair. It is also possible that the Boss will drop a Wildcard Scroll, these scrolls would be a randomly chosen Boss way point including the Boss you are fighting. Unfortunately you might just get a waypoint you already have and that would be unlucky. The scrolls are too valuable to be anything but bind on drop.

A good initial idea, but a bit too open ended.

A simple fix to the set in stone boss wp.
Have it be a "reward" for making it to level 100.
As a somewhat long time level 100 player, I get bored of farming one boss.
After going through every level of every area countless times, I do not need to see them anymore.
At 100 you do not get any xp and the drops from anything less than a boss are useless.
Also there would be no need for a boss wp scroll.
Just add a second tab to the obelisk with the wp unusable until level 100.

Doh! I probably should have been a little more descriptive in my previous post...

I meant "on the same page," meaning we recognize there is an issue with waypoints and have some ideas for improving how they work. Our 'fix' will be different than the solution that was originally suggested in this thread. I just wanted to point out that we realize waypoints need some love, and didn't take the time to actually go into greater detail. I apologize for my laziness.

The current waypoint system has issues and can be very confusing (especially for new players) to use. We think we can offer up some additional waypoint functionality (non-permanent that is) that will make it easier to grok and improve your overall experience with the game. I also think we can do this without breaking the balance of the game. Of course, when we do put the improvements out on the PTS, I expect some of you folks to log in and try it out - and hopefully tell us what you think (that goes for all changes really). We have been known to make mistakes... from time to time.

LOL I apologize if I was rude but if I was you were probably not the first that asked me that day. I have shown low levels HDOL before but only for a few minutes so they dont get much benefit beyond seeing how the battles are different there.
