mage in the shadows....
#36007 - 09/21/07 11:51 PM

Hello all! for the time being, I'm the new guy on the block, but eventually I'm going to be well known person in DR. Anyway, back to the real topic. I want to be a shadow mage, but desperately need help with a build and the best way to train for that path.

well if you want my opinion and this is my opinion only.. i say just all endurance while trying to get shadow bonus and mostly % gear.. run in circles or kill some mobs run back a bit and bolt ice bolt and shadow bolt some more till the group is small enough you can handle... to me and this my opinion going all int isnt worth it as the damage isnt that much greater once you get yourself some good shadow gear and use that as your main damage dealer.. using blue shield to me just means i waste double the potions as now i have to do heal and mana well doing all endurance it will mostly be just mana as you will running in circles and not getting hit much or kiting (hdol) at lvl 94 i have like 24k hps and like 23k mana.. to me the int bonus for increase atks hits isnt all that great... kinda like the str on a fighter with increase defense rating.. its barely noticeable

Thanks for the great advice! although, i still have some noobish questions about the abbreveations. like what does int mean? or "24k hps"?

Int = Intellect
24k HP's = 24,000 Hit points.

what i was trying to say is i didnt notice any difference going all int and being 8k hps and 38k mana with blue shield other then wasting more pots then doing all endurance with some good int gear and not wasting nearly 1/2 the pots i would do with all int and the time frame i was killing all was in seconds of each other..... tried it out on hdol, rasputin and the crypts.....

Farming is a word for describing grinding, instead of farming lets say oats, your farming rainbows, via killing mobs. So when you go out in search of fat loot by continuously slaughtering a boss or grinding mobs, that is farming.

And I agree with Clamm, the bonus you get out of more health is greater than that of the spell damage gained from +intellect, for me that is anyway.

Early on i would try to keep your end and int about equal. When you get to lvl 30+ you'll be able to decide whether you want more end or int. then you can either re-adjust your stats, or your equips accordingly.

The comments about soloing bosses with a mage seem a bit skewed. Only boss ive had probs with is Abbadon so far, and im only lvl 37, so it was to be expected im guessing. I also imagine that mages are much better for mob clearing then other classes, being that shadow lightning is almost "too" good. esp with the enhancement and good bonus.

The most important aspect that people are missing here is how you play. If you team a lot then you can probably go mostly int. If you don't boss-farm (like I don't == I find it too boring) then you don't need as much end.

Keep in mind that when people give advice, their experience is based on their personal playing style, and ymmv. So while what everyone here is saying may be good advice, it's based on particular circumstances.

Find the way to play that gives you the most enjoyment, and finding that style might take trial and error. It's better to come up with your own answers. It never hurts to get someone else's perspective, so long as you don't take it as gospel.

You are quite right, Haldur. My playing style with my mage is to rely a lot on my AOE spells, mainly shadow lightning, to take out the mobs as I run around them. Works very well for me, and I have almost twice as much int as end. The extra end would do me no good the way I play. But that's just me. I think that's what makes this game so fun, all the different options you can come up with, none of them really wrong.

if you are a member and have decent gear for the skill you use... like shadow.. do this and respec to all endurance and ditch blue screen and see the difference if any besides not wasting mana pots
