Why PVP? What's in it for me?
#35767 - 09/18/07 04:49 AM

I only started DR a few days ago, so I'm still learning a lot. I've read the threads on this board and the faqs, but I still don't know what the advantage for PVP is. Is it bragging rights? Do you get gold or items if you win?
Thanks in advance for your response

You get to fight entities that have slighty better intelligence than the AI of the mobs in the PvE dungeons.

They do things like adapt their playstyle, run away (or try to). And are generally harder to beat than the stuff in the normal dungeons.

The only thing you get is a little tag after your name saying how many PvP win you have got. Luckily it doesn't say how many PvP losses you have or I would be seriously ashamed.

I believe the Devs have stated that they plan to have rewards for pvping at a later date. Right now its basically just another way to have fun. If you don't enjoy having to fight against other players then its not for you. For me I get a somewhat high when I defeat an opponent that has challenged me. The AI is not complex enough to give it to me but some of the people that play DR do. There is nothing like getting a beat down until you revise your strategy and end up kicking [censored] to win a match

why pvp?

its a change of pace, if u love repetition, than countinue to pve..farming or running a dungeon or w/e...for me thats fun to a point and then i find myself wanting a lil extra...or i need a break

so i go pvp, beat up on some ppl and feel great bc i didnt just beat another drone ai pre-programmed mob, i beat some 1 who can re-evaluate a situation, adapt, and try and counter my moves....imo for competitively natured ppl, pvp is amazing...for ppl who dont embrace competition with gusto, pvp is a lax endevor at best

other than that u get some cool numbers above ur head

as for pvp rewards/incentive...i personally think that the feeling that some 1 else expressed when u beat some 1 is enuff, for others they might need a lil more, i kinda dunt want them to add rewards, but if they do...hey im already pvping id get more outta it :P

meh.
No loot, no xp, no items, not even a measly king's coin?
Might be fun, but without any decent incentive I don't see PvP taking off.

It's always nice when you face off against a strong oppoenent, you get the shaky legs of excitment. ^_^ It's great fun, and a way to improve reaction times and damage mitigation from different gears and builds.

I see what you are saying about incentive. The PvP however, is the incentive in and of itself. First person shooter games draw a certain group of players for just that reason. Counterstrike comes to mind....

The way I see PvP...
If you want to PvP go join the military and get shot at, doing that once in your lifetime should fill the need to think your superior to someone else. Either that or go play a FPS and leave MMO's behind. PvP in a MMO ends up being the one build dominating all others. Oh and dont forget the 'Ill insult you till I make you so mad you'll PvP me' routine. BTW I perfected that during the MechWarrior2 days (for you younguns that was about 13 yrs ago). It will only work on other phalically challenged small minds and annoys the living hell outta the rest of the community.

I think your post wasn't really on topic here sir,
1. Telling people who wish to PvP should go and join...the military and get shot at to feel superior, so what youi saying is anyone interested in PvP in online -GAMES- is someone who will eventually become meat for a war. So perhaps (just taking a few wild stabs in the dark here) anyone who plays any kind of violent game will do that in real life? If I was you I suggest you stay away from any murdering games, or racing games....because you might be inclined to tear someones face off after seeing it it done, I suggest you also stay away from all violent movies to, just in case you get the urge to copy that irl.

2. You suggest to people interested in PvP that they should LEAVE MMO's behind, yet your argument tends to wayne towards the hostility of players (I call them players because PvP isn't their only interest) who enjoy PvP, I have never been told by someone who enjoys PvP to "Leave this game" Maybe the Devs should quit making the MMO to, they put the PvP system in here.

3. PvP in an MMO end up being one build dominating? From what I have seen many classes counter each other in their own ways, granted some builds are more powerful than others, but general skill of a player and quick thinking can gain someone the upper hand. But I do agree with you in a sense that sometimes games can be un-balanced.

4. The insulting thing...well that's the person, not the PvP, most likely if there was no PvP available he will find something to bother you about and generally be a flamer/[censored], the ignore button helps for this.

5. No comment about your MechWarrior days, I'm sure you were the pwner king of the world.

Just a question for you, if you have zero interest in PvP, do not like people who are interested in PvP and think they should quit Dungeon Runners and joun the army to get shot at, why the heck would you bother clicking on the PvP forums, going into someones post asking a question, and post such a silly, un-thought out reply like this?

C'mon ppl ^_^;; this is a thread on why to PvP not a verbal battleground, that's what creates flamers!

If its of any use my 2-cents on why to PvP is that it shows that for your level, ypu'r cream-of-the-crop and could possibly give you an edge when ur trying to get into a good group and you have competition getting in.

I haven't attempted PVP yet, but that's because I want my character at least lvl 20 before hand unless I can't use my PvE characters in PvP. But I don't think that's the case.

RS??? Never heard of it, I might have if you didn't mention it as an acronym, but some games have great PVP.

Take FFXI for example. PVP is in EVERY server but it's not really like you just walk up to a random person and attack him. Instead you go to an arena and destroy them that way.

RS = Runescape. CRAP PvP system, but that's because its combat system was crap to start with.

This reply is not only for the original poster but to everyone who asks such a question.

Why do you play chess? Checkers? Chinese checkers? Mancala? Axis and allies? Yahtzee? Trouble? Chutes and ladders? Monopoly? Risk? Life? When you were a child did you go into those games with the anticipation that you might win? Did that provide excitement? PvP is just that. You are competing against another person. Winning is what you get out of it. Now as people get older there seems to be an infinite amount of psychological baggage that people voluntarily place on the boards for others to pounce on.

Back on topic... What's in it for me? The competition.

If you do not like to compete then there is nothing in it for you. If you like to compete then there is competition in it for you.

That, and the adrenaline rush (although that wears off if you PK too frequently). Seriously though, people who see a strong link in PKing in a game to murder in real life need serious psychological counseling.
