Scamming
#34869 - 09/08/07 03:53 AM

to quote the eula directly, While playing Dungeon Runners, you must respect the rights of others and their rights to play and enjoy the game. To this end, you may not defraud, harass, threaten, or cause distress and/or unwanted attention to other players.

does ripping peoples rainbows off qualify as distress? it sure doesnt make me feel good when some takes my rainbows under the false pretense of trading. is a trade system going to implemented soon and is action being taken against those reported for this? it kind of seems like a catch-22, i cant warn anyone in-game about being scammed, i cant take a screenshot and post it on the forums so everyone could see who was scamming or not.....yet there is no available trading system to prevent this from happening? its a thiefs loophole, they can scam as much as they want but if i try to do something i get in trouble? i took Rippers advice and followed "procedure" but have yet to see any action taken?

If you do not know your trading partner, here is how I would suggest you conduct any exchange of Mythic items:

Quote:

  • Join the same team, just you and him AND NOONE ELSE. If at any time a third person joins the trade, call it off. No exceptions!

  • Enter an instance, ANY instance. Clear out one of the larger, unobstructed spaces (the long galleries of lower Algernon work especially well here). Trust me, the time spent is worth it, this scheme protects BOTH of you from being scammed!

  • One of you should drop a potion at your feet - the other person then walks away in a straight, unobstructed line until he is as far away as he can be, and still see the potion. He then drops a potion (or other trash item) of his own, so you can verify you see items at HIS feet, too.

  • At this point, you each put your rainbow on the ground.

  • If EITHER of you moves towards the other person's Mythic goodie without putting what was promised on the ground, everyone snatches their things back. If your opponent makes the motions of a Teleport, EVEN if his item is on the ground - GRAB YER ITEM BACK. The deal is busted, the other guy is a scammer, write their name down and never do business with them again. Don't accept a "trust me, I dropped it - must just be abug, it's right here". Don't accept an "oops, didn't mean to pick it back up again". The slightest whiff of deception or untrustworthiness, and you should be OUT OF DODGE, post-haste.

  • However, if all is good and kosher? Both people walk forward and meet in the middle, pass each other, and continue on collect their new possession(s). (you might want to strip off your armor, if you're a fighter type - JUST to be sure you can't be outrun from that mid-way point in a last-minute double-cross).

thats quite a good idea, although i think most people would think you are trying to be deceptive while explaining all that to them, especially people that have been scammed before and would be a little more wary than most. i will definitely give it a try though, thanks for the suggestion!

Well, I've posted a more-detailed (and more thoroughly thought-out) walkthrough of this idea in the Player Guides section, and even PMed Crickette to ask for it to be made a Sticky thread. If that's done, then maybe it'll come into widespread use.

If nothing else, people will be able to say "go to the forums, and read this thread in Player Guides: Safe Trading and You - How to avoid Trade Scams ... I use that system to trade, itprotects both of us from beign cheated".

^_^ Oh, here's a direct link, feedback will always be welcome.

AND ... the quick version explaination, in-game:

"We'll team up and go into any instance - find a big room, clear the monsters, and drop our items on opposite sides. Once we're both happy that the right items are down, we can walk past eachother to collect our stuff

If _either_ of us does something suspicious, like not drop the item, or use a skill - just grab your own stuff back and leave."

You can give more details if asked, but that's the general gist of it right there.

i will definitely be trying this out next time i get a trade offer...i would still like to know about my other questions to...is it or is it not a violation of eula and are people that are being reported for it being warned or punished in some way?

I don't htink it's against the EULA per se; it's certainly poor sportsmanship, at the very understated least.

But even ifit's against the EULA ... proving an accusationof theft like that true, would be next to impossible. Unless the GM was right there to see it at the time.

Y'see, it's too easy to fake a screenshot, or a chat log, or whatever.

I have to ask why do you want/need to trade in this game. Maybe because I am a part of the old-timers in this game, If I find a rainbow or purple that I cant use I offer it for anyone who can use it for FREE!! I know novel concept, gifting people items is very anti-MMO, but then this game is not your typical MMO. I know in world that I play on there is very little scamming issues because there is a lot of gifting going on. I got a few new items last night from others and they don't expect anything in immediate return. But because of of this I know who I would offer and non usable rainbows to first.

I even added a little something on having an uninvolved/trusted 3rd party arbitrator/modirator to handle a trade. May sound wierd, but it works with the right people. (It did in Diablo 2.)

    What???? My funny quote???

lol... that's cool Cronniss. It's still funny to think about. Even gave my wife a laugh and she cares nothing for MMO's or the community therein.

JoeB: you ask why i would want to trade, im not lvl 100 yet and rainbows are hard to come by for me. i have yet to get a rainbow drop i could use, so i thought maybe, just maybe i could trade something to someone that they could use so i could have a rainbow i could use to. i certainly give items to my friends if they can use them. but if i can get some use out of a rainbow why not trade?
