How is the fanbase going to increase, etc
#34310 - 09/03/07 12:46 PM

This is a question more to the devs than anything but if anyone has any info, feel free to share.

I discovered the website for Dr randomly before it was open to the public, it was during closed beta, I have noticed the number of people on the servers now is maybe 20 percent higher than when I first started playing.
My question is, what is being done to increase the fan base, is this game advertised well, for example magazines or fileshack kind of sites etc, obviously the bigger the fanbase the more content we can expect in the future, this game deserves more numbers than its getting, I know it is still relatively new, but it would be interesting to hear from a dev any marketing plans in the pipeline or currently under way that will ensure fresh customers coming in.

Comments welcome, particularly from devs, and from the players, how did you find out about the game?

EDIT

I should add, I am not griping at the content now, I was very impressed with how much has been added on the 91 build, from the little things like more diverse icon images for the items to a whole new set of levels etc...

From what I understand the biggets problem with expanding the fanbase is this game has zero budget for advertisting. It is a word of mouth and I have mentioned it to everyone I know who may be intretsed.

Same here, I even promoted and reviewed it on TES forums, one of the busiest games forums, (as much as I could without going against their no advertising rules)
I was interested in future plans if the devs were able to extend advertising

Here is that thread:

BTW if the mods/devs think its a bad idea to put this link here then please feel free to remove.

Well in my general opinion, people are expecting something on the graphical and action level of 'certain' games. (we all know the games...) Thing is, Dungeon Runners is for a better word... original. It lacks anything that defines it as being a standard MMO. Instead it is an online dungeon crawler, plain and simple. Those who played diablo 2 reconize this game and those who loved diablo 2 I think like this game.

Point is that people want this game to be like everything else, it's not acting like it though, nor does it want to be. Dungeon Runners is the equivalent to the goofy kid at the prom dancing his own way and enjoying himself while every 'popular' kid hides their faces in shame at the sight of him. People begin to dislike the dancing kid but soon they come around to him and like his style of dance!

before any one says it yes i know Gamestop is the anti-gamer but....

I'm a store manager for them in a small town in Oklahoma:) yes we have the interthingy here to. I basically give out the DR ftp site to anyone that comes in for a mmo. It's not much but hey I try to do my part.

I just discovered DR on Thursday, when I downloaded the Tabula Rasa beta. Just happened to notice it in the PlayNC launcher, and I'm glad I did. I played about 20 minutes of Tabula Rasa and several hours of DR over the long weekend. My fiancee and I are subscribers now/already, and I plan on converting as many of my WoW-playing friends as possible.

There are a TON of nice things that DR has going for it -- twice the action with half of the running, for one. It may borrow from other games liberally, but it uses some of the best features out there.

I've heard a lot of complaining about the lack of complexity, but it doesn't seem like the devs plan on shutting off new content anytime soon, and I'm happy about that. "Lite" also isn't a problem if the play is engaging, which this most certainly is, solo or with a group.

There are few other features that would be nice too, and I hope this game lives to tell about them. I'll be doing my part to make sure word gets out and the base grows.

Personally I think DR needs a feature that totally seperates it from every other game out there, thereby making people stick with DR for that feature, if you know what I mean.

Diablo 2 had the whole magic finding, prefix/suffix, levelable mercenaries, rather unique features that made it great. We need something unique like that.

i think it kinda already does in the humor that the game has. you dont really see this hardcore of humor in any mmo's or rpg's.

You've never played the new bard's tale. Its full of jokes and humor poking fun at other games and genres. I enjoy these types of games but I'm kinda drugged up most of the time so I actually miss the humor. Too many doctors prescribing far too many meds.

A lot of arguments can be made for both sides, but I'll keep my response short and sweet instead....

The fanbase as as a whole (including member subscriptions) has done nothing but steadily increase. It hasn't skyrocketed, but it has gone up and up at a rather healthy rate. That alone is very satisfying, so we're very proud of that

Yeah, you aren't going to see any major New York Times Square ads for Dungeon Runners, although that would be pretty funny to me. We're far more interested in internet buzz.

Yes I notice the increase, and of course never expect to turn on the TV and see Christopher Walken as Frump in the upcoming DR film, just as long as the numbers keep increasing

I can only imagine how the Tabula Rasa Beta is helping out. That's the only reason I had even HEARD about DR, and I think Gamespot cast a pretty wide net for the Beta.

If even 5-10% of the people who got in on the Beta notice and decide to check out DR, that seems like it should help quite a lot...

I DO have a question. If DR wants more members, why do they limit those of us who recommend this game to someone, only allow us four people to bring in? I have already recommended two, who I have yet to see, and have a few interested.

after the person either signs up or 2 weeks you get another invite... but you could just give them the ftp link and they could download it without having to wait on invites to respawn:)
