Skill Upgrades
#34226 - 09/02/07 12:09 PM

Hello all, im currently a low level fighter (13) and was wondering if you guys buy the higher ranks of skills like cleave, soul rend and butcher. If so, which rank do you buy it up to? Cos right now, its all still at 1/20 so im wondering if i should upgrade it. Thanks alot.

Yes. The higher skill levels give better bonuses or do more damage when upgraded.

If your gona use a skill might as well make maximum use of it.

More importantly, are there any skills from other trainers that are useful for fighters?

Example: I've had my eye on the Gaseous Blast skill from the ranger trainer, but am hesitant to purchase. This doesn't suffer a non-ranger penalty for using, does it?

The problem with using skills from the other trainers is that they can be mana intensive. And cause us fighters are a bit fick we don't have much mana to spare.

Especially in PvP where you can't spam mana pots.

Gaseous blast is the only non fighter skill I use, I have soul rend as my "always" attack, and I have a mythic shield with 2 percent mana leech which means I never run out of mana, I only use gaseous blast for the groups of little mobs, 2 normally kills them, its not good enough to use on big mobs or bosses but it is a small help.

I keep these skills maxed when I level up, (i actually buy pretty much every skill regardless if I use it or not, simply because one day I may want to experiment and theres nothing else to spend money on anyway)
I dont actually use any other skills except these two (and heal self), I have found the fighter skills to be not that good really.

Gas blast was two mana intensive for me so i switched to cleave a 2hander and awesome cleavage that owns very hard. My cleave is doing 95% damage which is enough to 1 shot minions and add in aweseme cleaveage and it can kill no tank types in 1 shot also.

this is in response to the first post, but yes you should definately take every opportunity you get to upgrade the skills you use. Eventually, money is basically useless, especially if you ever get into boss farming. Don't worry about being low on cash all you really NEED money for is potions, everything else you can get dropped

I have a high-endurance "Arcane Warrior" ... I carry one or more Resistance spells around:

  • Divine (Fighter)
  • Poison (Ranger)
  • Fire (Mage)
  • Ice (Mage)
  • Shadow (Mage)

I have them at 5/20 ranks now, which gives me +325 resistance for one minute. With these, on normal, I can and have solo'd Vergrim (a Boss-and-two-heroes fight, bottom of the 20-30 dungeon "Vergrim's Vexation"). For him - take Fire and Divine, those're what he seems to spam.

Oh, I still need heal potions, but ... maybe 25-30 of them? Less, now that I know not to use Retribution (makes the small-fry go BOOM, which hurts me a lot), nor Gaseous Blast (same problem).

I can ALMOST take the fight on Insane, except Vergrim has an occasional attack that flat-out one-shots me (from over 6Khp). 8( No amount of heal potions will help with THAT, darnit.

Later, I stepped into the HDOL, alone, and barely level 25. Noted that the mobs were all the same color (blue-white), and some said "frostbitten" in their names. Noted two melee heroes, two fodder-type heroes, AND two ranged heroes. That's six heroes.

I popped Ice Resist and 1H Swivel Action ... waded in ... and only 4-6 healing pots later, all six heroes - and maybe 4-5 nonheroes - were face-down. Hola, pinata! ^_^

    EDIT:

I also use ... oh heck, I forget the name exactly, it's a Ranger curse ... Acid Burst, I think. It's an AoE centered on yourself, cuts the enemy's Defense rating by a healthy percentage. If I get a few tougher enemies on me, I pop that, and they die MUCH quicker.

I think it's called Acidic Blight. It sends out a rolling black cloud that reduces the defense of surrounding creatures.

    #34834 - 09/07/07 11:33 PM

Okay, I know this has NOTHING to do with skills, But...
Me and the Wife are 24th level fighter types, I use 2 ludicrous picks and she uses a fast 2-H sword and we still get our butts handed to us. On ANY setting for Vergrim...Any hints any one? We have had no problems up to here by ourselves on Insane, but even on normal we are having our problems....?
    Thanks in advance...

Are you using AOE or hitting his summoned horde? When I used to fight him I would take out the heroes with him and then only attack Vergrim. Ignore the other and do not use any AOE.

    (a) Fire and Divine resistance are your friends; max them out if you can.

    (b) kill the Rattletoe kith-n-kin first. They go down easier, and that cuts the DPS inbound.

    (c) DO. NOT. DAMAGE. THE. SMALL. RATS!!! They're living grenades, but they only go off if you hurt them. Unwounded smallfry are an annoyance; wounded smallfry are BOOM!-fodder.

    (d) Chug healing potions like it's what you BREATHE ... go through twenty or thirty of them if you need to. Their healing rates STACK, you know!

    (e) Did I mention Fire and Divine resistance?

    (f) Acid Burst is a good curse - cuts enemy defenses, which lets you hit more often than you would otherwise. Unnerving shout is good too, it slows down the inbound attacks.

    (d) DO NOT USE RETRIBUTION. The small rats mentioned above? Boom. Repeatedly. Yes, this is a bad thing - for you.

    ...

My fighter (twin hammer wielder) can solo Vergrim on normal, and _almost_ solo him on Insane (one of his attacks starts being able to cut through the resistances, and by then, is strong enough to essentially one-shot him ... despite having ~6K hitpoints). He's level 26 now, but was 25 last I bothered with Vergy.

What kind of hp and def you got? I solo'd Vegrim on extreme at 23 with my dual wield fighter and all it took was about (2) full rows of health pots.

I soloed him pretty easy but the first time through I came to help my wife. I let her nuke down the rats while I smacked the snot out of vegrim I think I went through 2 maybe 3 stacks of major healing pots. Would have been less but I didnt have those resist auras up. Only had 11k life at 22 then but he was level 25-27 procing red to me.

Well, I have restarted a new fighter, since I think my old one was glitched on the server crash. Anyway we only have maybe 3k in HP each. That may be some of the problem. I have been reading most people that use fighters have an attack rating about half their defence...is this true? I have about 2800+/- def and about the same att rating, my wife has about 3k def and about 900 att rating and seems to be doing better. We were doing well until then, he uses a spell I notice to amp up and then cast like shurikens that do 500-1500 HP per hit...I just can't believe we were doing that much wrong. I did have retribution, but had level 5 divine res. lvl 5 fire and lvel 5 shadow on too. But to no avail. The sidekicks just regenerate faster than I can cut them up. Oh, well, am going to be there soon with a new fighter anyway, but as they say, knowledge is power!

    Thanks all!

I've gotten pretty lucky, gear-wise, for my level. Everyone seems impressed with my stuff, anyway. You can see my stats, including Defense and Attack ratings, in this screenshot.

My STR, AGL, and END are 2:1:2, and that's how I plan to go with it pretty much all the way to 100. If I need more Mana, I'll divert a whole level or three to some INT. But I don't expect that to happen soon, if ever.

Yeah the Heroes were Regenning faster than my Damage out put. And I looked at your stats, and mine were higher all the way around..? I was one of the 'lucky' caught in the server crash and nothing has seemed right since that...Dunno...weird...will try again maybe this weekend.

... part of it's the weaponry I wield, not just the attributes. My armor gives me about +20DPS in melee, as does my helmet, and my shoulder-pads, as do my hammersbetween them (as blanket adds, not just their base rate), and .... well, you get the picture.

Purple gear really IS that good, sometimes. This time around, all my bad luck with drops appears to have given me a pass, and I've got some happily-NICE things (*knock on wood*) to play with.

Part of it may just be a compulsive "tap, tap, tap-tap" of my spacebar while fighting 'em. I chewed through thirty Member-grade heal potions the firrst time through. I think I'm down to twenty now. All on Normal - I can't do Insane on Vergy yet, talk to me again in about three levels. ^_^

im suprised you are having this many problems. i know i went through vergrim all by myself on insane whenever i went through that area. you may have to use a lot of pots but its doable. you have to concentrate on either the heroes first or just vergrim first. i normally went for vergrim first since he does the most damage and that way i could get the most out of the resists i used.never ever hit the little rats unless you accidently do because of a targeting issue. just bring lots of pots and it might take a bit but its possible.

    UPDATE:
We went through again, on normal, and sailed, maybe 3 potions of health apiece and 1 mana. Went up to Insane where their regen rate is still better than our weapons ATM however, but boy did we farm. We have been back several times after. I do notice that if we reset the level, but NOT the instance and we have yet to enter a 2nd time we get glitched. Even on normal they will regen faster than on Insane...We were caught in the server crash that gave us 40 Kings coins, etc. and certain things still act wonky...?If we go in and beat them and reset instance inside the place it pops us out and then things go back to normal, and once again clear sailing...Farmed a few 100k gold plus about 32 purple and two rainbows in one evening on normal. So all in all not a bad haul

So once again thanks to all who answered..now if we can just get some guilds on here.....

Yeah, thats what I want guilds for, not the whole PVP wreckage and sniping I have face on some OTHER MMO's...

    I want to start a guild called The Nightstalkers Guild;

My wife and I both work the late shift and we are usually on from 2AM to about 7AM weeknights, thus the name. I would like to get people together that are online at the same time, etc. That is the real reason I want a guild...

I just got done running Vergrim's Vexation. I fnished it as a fighter on normal, solo, at level 22 and did not have any problem. My Str/Agi is about 60 each and half that for Sta. I've got a little over 3000 defense and my damage is with a 2H rock hammer (Grandma speed) and is about 350-800. It took me between 10-15 member potions to do it and I just attacked the main boss with the attack that does extra divine dmg. and whenever cleave came open I used that. I never even noticed the little guys blow up as I was concentrating on on Vergrim.
Maybe the extra the agility I've got instead of health is the ticket to make it easier? I notice I hit more often with higher agility.

Yes, agility is useful for fighters - not as useful as it is for Rangers, but useful nonetheless.

I spec my stats for 2:1:2 for Str:Agl:End, and bump my INT up just barely to 20 (being an Arcane Fighter type, I find that getting Mana to ~500, at my level, is actually necessary - I go instantly no-Blue when I let off my entire chain of offensive PBAoE spells).
