The Dungeon Runner Inside Jokes Thread
#32735 - 08/20/07 04:06 PM |
Ok.. Since the game is based around humor, and little inside jokes here and there, I figure it would be a fun thread idea to start listing all the speculated meanings to the jokes and funny things that players pick up on. Names, Voices, etc. I'll start it off. Without any Dev verification, all these are speculations. Algor's Terror Dome = Making fun of Al Gore and his Global Warming campaign, notice the boss is Algor the Cold and some of the levels are in the snow. -------------------- Goya, Level 100 Something Dungeon Map Build 91 "The Oblisk to "Life" is disguised as your power button. here's the easy one, the reference to "Flowers For Algernon", the boss being a rat-like creature. If you've never read that short story, you need to. Still makes me cry, and I'm old! |

Frump's interdungeonal resort is one big joke about "reality" TV. The Mutanous Malaise has lots of funny named mobs that are close to rock and rap stars. Sitar legend / gutiar hero |

Ummmm, the whole game? Almost every quest in it? The NPCs? That being said, here are some of my favorites: * Sam's Dungeon Wholesale = Sam's Club, which is member's only * The arms merchants have huge tattooed arms AND are references to Huey, Dewey and Louie, Donald Duck's nephews. * The quest mob "Ol' Mangy Scrounger" = Ol' Dirty [censored] from the Wu Tang Clan (and the accompanying references to the WTC, as well) * When a certain quantity of gold coins drops, the amount is followed by "!" * The Dr. Seuss references in the Crazy Cat Lady quests from Audrey etc... -------------------- ~Ripper Complainers of the World Unite NOT Ripper in game... Quote: Thare are actually 3 people in Townston with this voice. The Mage & Jewelry King's Coin vendors and Loremaster Vraile. Guess they ran out of voices. As for my addition to this thread, Lothar of the Mound People makes a reference to the Black Panther. At least to the character within the Ultimate Marvel Alliance game (Xbox/360 version - haven't played the other versions). One of the things he says when you click on him is: "Hail stranger! No need to kneel, for I am a common man as you...except, with a crown." Which is similar to what the Black Panthar says in the credits of the game. That and just about there is a reference to just about every Shakespearian-style play there is with this npc as well - "If you see the ghost of my dead father, tell him...I'm sorry about the poison." hehe ![]() Edit - corrected some spelling -------------------- Cronniss Starrmyrr Edited by Cronniss_S (08/21/07 01:34 AM) |

How about in Mutanous Malaise (or how ever you spell it) you get quests from Gee Dubya Shrub to look for WMDs...I still snicker when I see that. |

The merchant near the Dew obelisk sounds like Krusty the Clown from The Simpsons. Lady outside Mutant Malaise is Tipper Gourd and she's looking out for the children. Tipper Gore is Al Gore's wife who put all those explicit content warning labels on music CDs. The head hauncho boardroom dude, Frump, with his non-stop knockdown attacks, just like a greedy CEO, always trying to keep us lil guys down. Cleaveland (Cleveland), Deathtroit (Detroit), H.E.L.L. A. (L.A.) areas. The One True Bling (rainbow ring), reference to the One Ring in Lord of the Rings and makes fun of showy "bling" jewelry. I had a bunch of others in mind, but just now forgot em, lol. - N Edited by Merkad (08/22/07 01:16 AM) |

Two of the new skills in the new patch: Blue screen of life - read "Bluescreen of death", the way windows tells you it is chewing away at your system ![]() and Heal self, not other - Guildwars spell: Heal other. ´nuf said. Also the tooltip to spontaneus regeneration is a spoof of Einsteins theory of special relativity,. Now thats some hardcore intelligent stuff for you! -------------------- Run, my pretty little chunks of XP! Run! |

Ya know Frump actually reminds me of a Deveel in one of Robert Asprin's MYTH Inc series of books.. maybe its just me but Greed + Frump + Interdungeonal == Deveel Frump on Deeva [Deeva was an Interdimensional Bazaar... see the coincidence?] |

Oh yeah, and the opening screen to this game looks like a dead Conan at the end of his movies on his throne with blade next to him and all his riches. - N |

Is it just me, or do the merchants all sound like Mike Myers' Shrek? I love the references to some music stuff.......Tonee Eye-Oh-Me's pad, having to get "the Grey Album", one album by Zeppelin, and a third I can't remember. I thought the feud betweed frump and Roh-Zee O'Donnell was a hilarious reference. There are others, I just can't remember them atm. -------------------- Oglind - level 100 Pyromancer - World 4 FourSticks - level 25 Ranger - World 4 "Frisbeetarianism is the belief that when you die, your soul goes up on the roof and gets stuck." I believe that at least 2 of the quests, in the text of the quest, mistakenly use "Trump" instead of "Frump". -------------------- World 7 Gelum - Level 58 Arcane Scout CrimsonMoon - Level 47 Pyromancer Thormageddon - Level 19 Brutish Barbarian 4/1/1 Rainbows 9/3/1 Books |

actualy the whole game is riddled with jokes and inside humor the game is designed to be a parody of diablo2 and WoW its drop style is from diablo 2 and the items names are mocking drops of both games as for voices the hermits voice is krusty the clown and when you get to meet the weapon dealer his voice is shrek and ive played around with other voices theres a nerd near the hermit that looks like a burly fighter but talks like a D&D geek a valley girl works the booth near him as well ive even talked to a sean connory type npc and i seem to meet new ones all the time like arnie is the banker and im sure the humor goes on for miles wish more games were this humorus we focus on the reality and bleakness of life more often in games and forget games were designed to be fun and humor is fun ![]() |

This one may be nothing but my obsession with Animal Planet shining through, but all of the rat-like creatures in Algernon are named Whisker _______. The Townston Lieutenant is the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons, I'm sure. |
