Should I fire >1 poisonshot on somebody at a time?
#31874 - 08/09/07 04:18 PM

I had a fairly newbie question about firing poison shot (The one that affects only one target). When I hit a monster, it gets poisoned for about 2 seconds. My refresh is 0.5 seconds, so I can fire multiple poisons at them. Do the poison effects combine, or is it redundant if the thing is already being poisoned (and firing on it again will do no good)?

I shoot multiple of enemies once with poisonshot. Then, shoot them again with the poison wears off.

Consensus used to be that poison stacked the same as other elemental damage. Not sure if that has changed but I am pretty sure it still does the same.

I've been wondering that myself, Fonzo.

Something to consider when using poison shot on a main attack button is that it can actually slow down your attacks with certain bows. Experiment and find what works for you...

Yeah I found that out the animation actually slows down my plate piercer when trigger frenzy is activated which is almost always, very short cool down at 100. I do more damage with all my crit gear and trigger frenzy on LMB than using poison shot.

I've wondered this my self. . .

My test:
VERY VERY scientific. Hit something, watch the numbers float away. determine if there are multiple floats based on what i've hit them with.

my conclusions:
1) same element dmg from different effects stacks. poison shot, gas blast, penetrating shot damages will stack.
2) same effect dmg from different players stacks (duh) such as 3 guys using poison shot
3) 80% sure: same effect damage from single player resets the effect timer. hitting a guy with poison shot, then waiting till after seeing the 2nd dmg float (2 second mark), then shooting him again, the observation was that there was only 1 damage float after that. if it stacked there should have been 2 (withing 1 sec) at least once.

combine conclusion 3 with the fact that poison shot is the ONLY skill effect that overlaps dmg time vs cooldown time, and imo it'll be changed.

Weapon-based cooldowns are based on the base attack speed of the weapon you're using, so attack speed bonuses (passive, buffed, or otherwise) don't affect the cooldown.

we weren't referring to the cool down for poison shot. This has to do with how many shots you get off per second. When using poison shot on your LMB you get less shots off than you do if you have a skill such as trigger finger on it. This causes a large drop in DPS that the added damage of poison shot does not make up for. After playing around with it for awhile I know why Tachan always laughed at rangers who used poison on LMB.

Obviously you were, because if you're using poison shot on LMB the "number of shots you get off per second" is going to be based on poison shot's cooldown. Weapon speed increases do not affect the cooldown. Thus, weapon speed increases will increase the "number of shots you get off per second" with a normal attack, but will not increase the "number of shots you get off per second" with poison shot.

Your rate of fire is not based on the cooldown. You do get shots between the poison shot the same as if you have shadow lightening as a LMB skill. You fire a normal shot in between the poison shots. I am fully aware that the cooldown for a skill is not affected bonuses to weapon speed. Either you are not a ranger or have not noticed the difference we brought up. If you don't find me in game and I will show you. It is not as obvious until you are at high levels.

Answer to question:
No, the same poison attack do not stack. Not to my knowledge at least.

And yes, you do less damage per second when using poison shot compared to go speed/crit with normal attacks.

Jinxed I am almost positive that gaseous blast and poison shot stack. I think poison shots stack but would have to test it more for sure.

Gas blast wears off anyway before the cooldown so no biggie. And as for poison shot, Ive never tried it. Just passed on what Ive heard from high levels using it.

"If poison shot stacked bosses would go down silly fast" was their words.

Hmm, I think Ill try it out myself. Second hand source is never really reliable, is it?
