Switching...Mage->Warrior->Mage?
#24575 - 06/17/07 02:16 AM

Dungeon Runners is definitely a revolutionary game and has greatly changed my view on how classes should be setup in MMORPGs but the problem(or good thing in my case) is that mages are extremely powerful and as always have the highest DPS at higher levels while it seems quasi-impossible to get to a high level playing as a strict mage... My idea was to go warrior by getting the warrior passives and re-speculating my stat points all while getting full warrior gear so I could farm some bosses a bit. After I'd farm bosses I'd obviously(hopefully) gain equipment that could be used for power leveling and from what I've seen(noticed), warriors are extremely good at low levels, and as a level 28 mage with 394 int I do good damage especially with AoE but I just don't seem able to fight(farm) bosses without trading in my int for end and I end up with a tank mage that can't do enough damage to bosses to kill them. I wasn't sure about switching classes though because I noticed my AoE damage was awesome and with spell combinations I could take out entire mobs 'in the blink of an eye'. My most recent strategy of leveling would entail me going to the widow maker's lair and killing off the skeletons for a good 200-350 points each instance. Not too sure what to do and my game time is almost at half that of people who are already level 50-85...

First: Who cares about that level? There is no bonus content at level 100, so the earlier you get there, the earlier your gonna get bored. Just take your time and have some fun

Second: What you say is true. Mages can clean a group really fast, but at bosses they have a harder time. Harder, but there is no reason that a Mage can take a boss down if you do it the right way, and a lot of potions also help.

Now, you have the major bad luck that you are killing widowmaker. That is about the WORST boss to face as a mage, because he and his spawns will do some heavy damage, and his rooting ability prevents you from kiting him. Still, he is doable, be it with a pretty amount of potions each fight (Like 10-15, depending on your HP)

Killing Widowmaker

First: The spells that are good against widow maker. Make sure to pick up Gaseous Blast, Fire Ring, Shadow Lightning, and a direct damage spell of your favorite type (Ice bolt for Ice, Shadow Bolt for shadow, Fire bolt for fire). Also pick up the + damage buff for your favorite damage type.

Second, get the following passives: Mental Power, Bookwurm and Gym Freak(Fighter). You can also take up Improved Shadow Lightning if you like it.

Now, the fight itself is a bit of a timing matter. Get close to widowmaker and start nuking her with your direct damage spell. Whenever you get a lot of small mobs around you, or she spawns a new group use Gaseous blast, Followed by shadow lightning, Fire ring and then another shadow lightning. Most will be killed of by the damage, but try to let some alive, since she is less likely to spawn new ones when there is a reasonable number of them around. After that, simply start nuking with your direct damage spell again. Dont forget to pop your + spell damage self buff, since it helps big time. Just keep doing this tell shes dead (And remember to take PLENTY of pots with you). When fighting her i sometimes drank 3 potions at a time, to prevent myself from dieing.

again, this is about the worst boss for a mage, so you didnt really choose the best one to farm. Perhaps the next dungeons boss, Frump, is a lot better for you. I found him easier to kill then our annoying little spider friend, and his loot is even better.

I'm able to solo widow maker just fine but I don't find that boss to be particularly lucrative, and definitely not worth camping for experience. I mean the ability to kill "properly setup" bosses like vergrim and snow chief.

Widowmaker... ugh.

Pain in the neck - lousy loot.

Zubin, your sig is disturbing, to say the least.
To say the most, I think if that's serious you should be locked up.

It's somewhat of an inside 'joke' if you could call it that... Really it's because some of these arrogant(and yet worthless) high levels on world 19 believe their concepts and ideas are correct all the time. I was ignored by these world 19 players so I had my friend use the <player1namehere> - random message - <ignoredplayernamehere>: <message> trick.

Anyway, the best part about the Widow Maker's Lair is that the skeletons make for great exp, just reset the instance as soon as you get a good 200-350 exp off the skeletons.

Snow Chief is very easy for a mage, and you get 500 exp per run up til level 30. I leveled there between level 20-30. All the underlings die by your AoE, as do the heroes/champs. And Algor himself, just use the anti-bash buff then keep spamming fire bolt/shadow bolt and use your AoE whenever possible.

As for Widowmaker. I never had problem with that boss, dont know what you are trying. But do NOT use shadow lightning as stated above. It just takes time to cast so just keep spamming fire/ice bolt (switching from one animation frame to another it what takes the time). And ignore all fodder, just keep spamming that spider til she's dead. And pot.
