ver 75 Passives?
#21323 - 05/21/07 10:01 PM

Do you have to leave the new passives in your skill bar to obtain the benifits like the extra krispy monster bait has to stay in your bar?

Yes.

Which is rather annoying... considering mages have an extra passive that just loves taking up space.

I'd say it's the opposite of annoying! Everyone has the two passives that were traits before the patch. Mages get an extra one, whereas fighters and rangers are stuck with only two. So magic users get more options than the rest of us; no one says you have to use all the passives for your class. Using all three just gives you an extra bonus, and one that isn't available to the other classes.

Then again, I'm an Arcane Fighter whose current build uses four passives. (Two fighter, one mage, one ranger.) So it's not like everyone's going to be sticking to previous class lines anyway.

It'll be interesting to see what the people who join after this patch do with their characters, since they aren't starting out with the preconception of "this is how you build a fighter, this is how you build a ranger, this is how you build a mage, and those are your main options."

I must fully agree with Swordlgleam. I'm currently using 3 passives for my battlemage(2 mage , 1 ranger for mana pool) and as attack combo i'm currently using Righteous Stomp (fighter) for crowd control, then Ring of Fire and finally Gaseous Blast( cloud of poison - ranger) and spam Shadow Lightning as much as possible. And i can also use protection spells against poison and divine (ranger, figher) so i have full defense and offense tools and game starts to be really funny since yesterday evening

i use three passives too and have space for offense skills that use not very often... i think its good that the passivs have to be in the skill bar because if it weren't so you couldn't really experiment with the passiv combos..

Darn.. I was hoping that wasn't the case... I'm trying to play a pure mage and wanted the extra slots for more spell options, however with the 3 added slots being used up by passives it seems that I didn't really get any new slots at all.

Why to boost pure mages only? Don't be selfish and enjoy new skills and spells. 5 slots +RMB&LMB for attacking skills is not enough for ya? So get rid of some passives ...

From what I've heard, most pure mages don't seem to ever run low on mana, especiallly if they have manasteal gear. So ditch that weak passive and use an extra skill. You might have to chug an extra mana pot here and there that you wouldn't have otherwise, but that's about it.

If you don't like the new passive system and just equip the two for your old class, you're still up a skill slot. I like being able to add more though, as I never really used more than about 4 skills anyway.

I would be rather shocked if someone went without *any* of the passives...

Well Lazarus_K, let me be the first to shock you. I am refusing to use passive skills of any kind in my skills bar since "Passive" has been a title for auto-skills in tons of mmo's throughtout the online gaming history of games like these...and now they have "Passive" skills that can only be used if you plan to waste your NEW extra slots we just received. I am going completely Passive-less because of this mess.

Passive: 1. A component that does not require a source of energy to perform its intended function. 2. Existing, conducted, or experienced without active or concerted effort. 3. Relating to or characteristic of an inactive or submissive role. 4. Receiving or subjected to an action without responding or initiating an action in return.

So.. you're deliberately gimping your character to "stick it to the man" and prove your point about your personal interpretation of the nomenclature?

We had two traits, which are now passive skills. They are passive because we don't have to click anything for them to work. We have three new skill slots. Assuming you keep your two class traits, you have one new skill slot. You are not being cheated or robbed. If you want to use more passives, you have less actives. And visa versa. This is a strategic choice, which also helps make characters more unique. You're not supposed to be able to use all possible skills at once. Five skill slots was decent enough. Now we have an extra one, potentially three extra ones. Why is this a problem?

Like you just said...it's my choice and helps a character be more unique so I will be just that. Unique. Don't like it? Tough. I have every right to throw my 2 cents in just like anyone else in the forums and so I will continue to do so.

I'm not saying I don't like it, I just think it's a little silly. If you can make a viable character without using any of the passives, all the best to you. But I don't really think it's possible to make a character without passives that stacks up to the ones with. You're sacrificing 25% attack speed or 20% damage, as a starter, and it's very difficult to make that up.

Of course you have a right to your opinion. I just don't think you've thought it through very much. You seem to feel that the devs cheated you out of something with the passives. I'm just trying to explain why that's not true.

When I remove the passives from my character I am a Touchy Pirate ... not sure if that is the same everywhere.

Giving my arcane fighter an xbow, swapping out Way of the Roo for the ranger +25% speed one, and taking Soul Rend off my left-click made me a Touchy Pirate. No other changes - same stats (mostly), same other three passives. I've also seen pirates who have melee weapons. Maybe they just call you a pirate if they have no idea [censored] you're up to. In which case, I approve.

I just have to say, I don't think it's a mess. Of course you are entitled to your opinion. It was a choice. Why should DR be constrained to doing things exactly the way others have "throughout the online gaming history"? I'm using four passives at the same time, which isn't possible with the limited historical implementation from other online games.

Sure, it limits what other skills I can use, but how many do I really need? I use soul-rend in my left-click slot, butcher in my right-click slot; then I still have room for ring of fire, righteous stomp, 1H (or 2H) swivel arm, and whatever the quick-like-a-bunny skill is called. If I could do everything, I would be just like everybody else, and it would be boring.

You realize that definition 1 is EXACTLY what the passive skills are, there is no source of energy being used. Definition 2 is also pretty accurate as you don't have to click anything or perform any action for the passive skill to take effect once you've chosen which to use. Definition 3 -- well, without using passives you're likely to be a submissive, so I'll ignore that one. And as for definition 4, well it doesn't make sense in this context.

With the new implementation, you've not lost anything. In fact, as has been stated already, if you keep the two passives you originally had, you'll still be up a skill slot. Bonus.
