Allow freeloaders ONE purple/yellow item
#21222 - 05/20/07 11:36 PM

My logic goes like this:

I'm a freeloader.
I can't use membership items: yellow, purple, rainbow.
Therefore, I barely even glance at membership items.
Because I never look at the better stats, membership items don't give me any incentive to pay.

If non-members were allowed to use a single yellow or purple item at a time..

I would look at every non-member item I picked up, because I might be able to use it.
I would constantly be seeing the better stats on membership items.
The better stats might inspire me to pay for a full set of membership gear, not to mention the other bonuses.

I don't think this needs to include rainbows, because use of mythics should be a reward for paying members. Besides, everyone looks at the stats on those anyway, since they're fairly rare. (The stats on them also suck - work on that.) This could only include yellows, but then I would still never look at purples, and most members have outfits of mostly purples.

This might also work as "use for anything but your weapon," as member items have drastically better base damage at lower levels. (I haven't noticed it at all at higher levels, when I've bothered to check.)

I know that "freeloaders who for some reason stick around" aren't high on the devs list of priority demographics to focus on. (There's not many of us.) I still think this is a worthwhile idea. Every membership counts, right?

Sorry if you dont have much money but the way i see it is they deserve to get paid something for entertaining you. and its as simple as that.

Come on the game is only $60 per year to be a member and thats the price of a new box game on store shelves. Most of those games dont even have secure servers.

I do like your logic it sounds well thought out at least the part of you checking all the members gear for upgrades.

Well, of course I'm in favor of it. (I doubt any non-member would be against it, of course.)

I really like this idea. It would encourage membership and constantly being plagued by the idea of getting to see what one item does for you while knowing you could use them all if you paid for them would be a real incentive.

I also think they should put a time limit between each use on HDOL and Respec for non-members to encourage membership.

I really love your idea. Sorry for putting in my two cents.

Where did I say anything about that? I agree that the devs deserve something. I want this game to succeed, and that means the devs make serious $$$. Personally, I play as a non-member because my schedule is very unstable. I'm about to leave for a summer working in the wilderness with no internet. If I paid now, most of my subscription would go to waste, and the subscriptioni benefits aren't worth $5 a week to me. When I get back, I'll be taking 18 credits, working as a lab assistant, and competing on the equestrian team. That'll probably only leave a couple of hours a week of DR for me, if anything, and the subscription benefits aren't worth $5/ten hours.

If I had a lazy summer ahead of me with nothing much to do, I'd be much more inclined to pay, because I'd be getting my money's worth. Note that I say the benefits, instead of the game - I find the game to be very playable without the benefits, and in fact, I enjoy the extra challenge.

this is an interesting idea

as for birds nudge to nerf non-member respec..bad idea
-if you want cheaper respec for members thats fine
-but you do not alter a CORE aspect of a game-new aspect at that-
---in rediculous ways

see ALL free games with payshop..if you dont understand -why-

@Swordgleam

I said i was sorry to hear you had no money and now i will say sorry to hear your liffestyle is too buisy to actually play. Get yourself unbuisy and paying is my other suggestion.

I did say your idear was good dont push it, the company has a right to make money and by you saying the game is very much playable without member only gear then they need to actually make things harder as giving you member only gear even 1 piece to use might allow everyone to freeload and never pay. Now its a bad suggestion. You should have stay quiet when you was winning.

But in all fareness the game is designed so you get a chance to test it not actually play it to the end.

Lestai... you think the game isn't playable to the "end" without becoming a member?
That's not what the devs said, that I recall. (They just said very difficult)

I played to close to level 30 as a nonmember. Was compelled to become member because I was missing the good stats on my gear. Wanted my health and mana steal. Havent looked back and now paying for 2 members, cant wait till I can merge them.

I doubt the devs would ever put merge in...

(It'd be easy to make five level 12 chars in a few days and combine them altogether into a level 72)

At level 29 as a non - member and doing fine. Can't become a member. May never be able to. That isn't why I think this Is a good Idea though. I think this is a good Idea because one cigarette is never enough. Give them one item and they will want to have all there slots filled with member items.

Sorry you misunderstood what I meant by merge. When multiple characters are allowed on one account I can merge my 2 accounts into 1 with 2 characters. So I only pay $5/month instead of the $10/month I am now.

I know it could just be because I'm a freeloader too, but I really like this idea. Most of the member bonuses are subtle yet effective - extra storage space and ability to store more potions in less inventory. Throwing in a multitude of overpowered items only members can use seems out of place; I'd never pay to play simply because I wouldn't feel as good about my accomplishments knowing I did it using a special array of highly overpowered weaponry I paid real money to use.

Allowing one member item shifts the focus away from them being "special things you paid money for" and more towards "really good and special weapons", where I think it should be. Heck, it could even be explained with the old D&D excuse for why you can only wear two rings (which was something about their magic fields being too powerful to wear more).

It still lets member items help members much more, but makes them something more than useless tradeables to non-members. And it would even make K-Coins kind of useful to nonmembers, in a gambling sort of way.

Arrange my lifestyle to better fit a computer game.. got it. But I appreciate your sympathies.

The game isn't supposed to be impossible for freeloaders. It is supposed to be a free game - you can pay if you want extra perks and to support the devs. And that is the reason most people pay - not because things were getting too hard as a freeloader, but because they wanted that something extra, or because it was their way of telling the devs that they'd made a quality game. This suggestion is aimed at that first group - the ones who are fine with DR as it is, but might be inspired to want that extra something special, once they get a taste of it.

One member item isn't going to overpower freeloaders. A bit of healthsteal, which is probably what most people will end up going for, is nice, but hardly game-breaking. And as Kazerad mentioned, this will allow non-members to finally have a use for king's coins, which they currently don't.

Me , I could care less about life steal , I would like a little of there resists.

I would love to support this game if I was able to. Still trying to figure out a way to as a matter a fact , and if I should off of my $600 a month income. Yeah I think I will try it.

Eh, resists are not that useful. I played when the game was still in beta and we all got free member gear. I never even paid any attention to my resists, because they didn't seem to make all that much difference. Casting a resist spell helps a lot, but those give you around +600 resist at higher levels, whereas you'd probably only have 60 resist from gear, unless you went looking for an entire set of gear that all had that resist.

Ya, finding the resists you want on gear that is statted with what you want is nearly impossible.

Unless you keep jewelry with the right resists on it.. I sort of do that now, except with stats. Two +stat rings for every stat, plus two +resist stun % rings.

Another suggestion is to make non members gear have lessor resists and lessor leech on the blues /?

Or allow the ppl that have made at least 1 attempt of $5 sub to get the 1 item of members only gear and spend kings coins. This way the guys that did show good faith and support... its only $5

Now if you cant pay that much.

But my experences of watching the locus go from f2p to demo to pirating games its just all bad and i have been shafted from beta positions because of these locus and im a paying customer with any games i play. At some point i just wish all companys would stop the f2p stuff and only give beta spots to paying customers. But we dont live in a perfect world and i may not get in the beta as many paying customers could still take that open spot.

Another grip i have with pirates is they ruin everything. The game titan quest comes out and 50% of the player base has pirated the game off bit torrent and demanding they want a working patch for there problems. lol

So what happens the company iron lore stays unfunded and cannot give us the titan.net with secure servers and it was and is a very good game. but no secure online features means no online community for me and i get bored to death in just a few weeks of single player so the game lost al its replay value and there was no real econemy. And that because of freeloaders.

If they make it too playable then i want me money back as i paid too much. but i think your right with this as its still hard for even members so i can see were your coming from if they offer the game free to play it must stay free and sort of playable without becoming a slug fest. So thats why i made a suggestion to add half resists on blue gear because even i have seen the gear you guys get and think of that stuff as trash, i have not one blue on me or in stash nothing even comes close to being an option of usable, not even for a lvl hehe so thats whyi can give you guys the benifit of the doubt the game may be too hard.

If your kings coins was not soulbound i would be taking them. here ya go a few blues for those, hehe

I don't really see how pirating relates to this..

The game isn't supposed to be hard for freeloaders, as far as I know. It's just supposed to be easier for members. Way back in beta, free players could only use green and below - the devs added blue to make thing easier.

To reiterate the things we seem to keep coming back to:

1. The point is not to gimp free players; you're not supposed to have to pay to make the game playable. The game is not designed to be exceptionally hard for freeloaders.

2. One membership item won't greatly increase the power level of free players. It will make them aware of the benefits of membership, but one upgraded item out of ten items worn is not going to have a huge effect on their gameplay experience.

Having partial resists on blues is interesting, but I don't think it's needed. It takes away some of the extra benefits of membership, and though it does benefit free players, I think things are easy enough as it is.
