Poison effects missing a tick of damage
#20532 - 05/07/07 01:55 AM

If I turn on the damage display I can see that noxious shot (which is supposed to do damage over two seconds) only does damage in one tick. That damage is for half of what the total damage should be so it looks like a second of damage is being dropped somewhere (either in the beginning or end).

It could be that the damage occurs but is just not displayed but that doesnt seem the case.

So noxious shot which damages over 2 seconds has only 1 tick of damage (or at least numbers that pop up).
Poison shot damages over 4 seconds but only has 3 ticks of damage.
The gas cloud is currently at 5.5 seconds for me and had 5 ticks of damage.

I would bet this also holds true for other DOT's like burning and that divine damage one.

Noxious Shot takes the biggest hit from this as it is only doing half damage now.

Can anyone confirm if they are getting full damage from poison skills? I did tests with various barrels and enemies and Noxious Shot just isn't as good as advertised for me.

I just noticed this bug too when I turned on the damage display, glad I'm not the only one who did.

What's the status on this? It makes noxious shot really worthless.

This was posted over 6 months ago, but after playing with a new ranger today, I see that it still exists. Here's another thread that was posted in July: linky...

This bug effective cuts the effect of Noxious Shot in half by eliminating one of the two expected ticks. The description for Noxious Shot reads "Damage over two seconds". There is, however, only one tick and it's at the one second mark after using the skill. The initial damage appears from the actual arrow hitting the target (it's impossible to tell what causes the damage because the numbers are stacked on top of each other AND they're the same color - see this suggestion: linky...). One second later, a tick of damage is calculated, but then the DoT ends. It's possible that the targeted mob is getting a tick at impact (which is impossible to tell, as mentioned above), but the adjacent mobs definitely aren't. In my case, when I mouse over the skill, this is what I see:

Expected Noxious Shot damage

Unfortunately, when I use the spell, I never see this much damage. Instead, I mostly see damage in the 100s, occasionally in the low 200s. If there was only supposed to be a single tick, then the damage should be at least the minimum value specified in my screenshot. Since the damage is lower (sometimes significantly) than the minimum, this indicates that the damage has been split over two ticks, one of which is missing.

Just got done testing Gaseous Blast. When I mouse over the skill, this is the expected damage:

Expected Gaseous Blast Damage

At the skill's rank, per the link above, I get four ticks of damage. I was able to capture the amounts for all four ticks on a single mob:

Tick 1: 116
Tick 2: 105
Tick 3: 108
Tick 4: 106
------------
Total: 435

After four ticks, I didn't even break the minimum value of 451.25 damage. This is evidence that there is either a tick missing or the calculations for generating damage for the existing number of ticks is incorrect. This particular bug isn't as obvious as it is with Noxious Shot because the combined damage for the existing number of ticks can actually exceed the minimum. You will, however, never reach the maximum due to the bug.

A new build was made last night (went to QA this morning) that fixed this bug.

Anson, this bug appears to affect Soul Rend, too, based on some further testing I just did. Does the build fix this bug for all DoTs or just the poison DoTs?

Here's the expected damage from Soul Rend for one of my characters:

Expected Soul Rend Damage

I recorded two ticks as follows:

Tick 1: 154
Tick 2: 162
------------
Total: 316

Obviously 316 is less (significantly) than the minimum damage of 438. This shows that Soul Rend is also either missing a tick of damage or that the damage is being incorrectly calculated for the existing ticks.

All DoTs.

Rock on! Now that the DoTs are being fixed, do you have time to answer the questions in this related thread ?

Thanks again, Anson!
