"Unique" items/sets?
#19699 - 04/14/07 11:00 AM

I've run across a lot of these purple "unique" items, usually with a name like Psycho's,Preacher's,Theo Logan's,Ringwraith's, Grunt's or Meatpaw's.

Are these intended to be grouped together for some set bonus, like green items were in D2?

In some cases I have 4 out of 5 for a full "named" armor set.

Jest askin.

If so it would be more like the old wonderful game of Diablo2

I like the idea too

Back in the day I suggested / asked about a set idea. Word from the devs was that there were sets, but not "sets". Meaning you could collect a full set of gear that had the same look, but you'd get no bonuses for doing so.

They did say they liked the idea of "sets" and would consider it though. No clue on if that ever went anywhere though.

We are still planning on making Collectible Sets that provide additional bonuses and enhancements, but this feature is lower on the list of "things to do" at the moment. I want them in the game in a bad way, so if I can figure out a way to get this feature in sooner than later, you can bet your Turkey Leg it will happen.

That's going to be a challenge. On the one hand, you want a collectable set to be hard to acquire and thus have the drops be rare, but on the other hand, all the items in this game are lvl based, so by the time you have a full set, you will have outgrown most of the items in the set.

I guess the assumption I'm making is that unique items are fixed in lvl. I suppose like all the other items in the game a set peice could be generated at any lvl. But it would still seem unlikely that anyone would be able to collect a full set close in lvl. This feature would seem to demand some sort of trading system between players.

In my opinion, even trading probably wont solve the problem. Lvl based items are by definition temporary. And collectable items are by definition something with more permanance and long term value. It was suggested before that maybe some items (unique collectable set items) could scale in lvl along with the owner. Perhaps to offset this effect, the value of individual set items would be quite poor, but become exponentially more valuable as more peices of the set were added.

Its been my observation in other games that completed set bonuses are rather lame when compared to the stats on the individual peices, and so people tended to wear mixed sets to get better overall effects. The idea suggested above might address that.

Great idea. I'd think the sets would only be available to higher level players in order to address the issue of outgrowing them. The only problem I see with "scaling" stats on gear is that once you have aquired a piece, if it scales as you level, you would not be inclined to replace that piece of gear. For me half the fun is finding new gear and trying out different stat combinations.

If sets were only available at around 90 +, it gives those high level players something to work for even at level cap, thus extending the playability of the game.

I think a game mechanic such as unique sets would be more fun if they were available for players of any lvl. Perhaps there could be a cap to the scaling effect, so that some item sets would only be useful from the 1-25 range, 25-50 etc.

By making the individual peices of a set lower in quality than a purple let's say, then finding just one or two set items wouldnt monoplize those equipment slots. It would only be after multiple peices of the set were found that the overall set bonuses would make those items desirable to wear (thus the need to collect them).

If you put a hard lvl restriction on item sets then they will turn into what rainbow items are now. Things of limited utility that take up space in the bank vault.

What if you had the sets be themed, and only findeable within certain areas? So all the pieces of the Dangerous Weather set drop in Algor's Frostbite and the side-dungeons therein. That gives it a level limit, the same as the dungeon's, and makes it slightly easier to find, since you know where to grind to look for it. Maybe make the max lvl on the items 5 lvls higher than the max for the dungeon so you can wear it while collecting the next themed set. Have a couple of themed sets per dungeon, either the same as or the opposite as the element(s) in the dungeon.
