Impact of INT & Damage Bonus on Spell Damage
#19662 - 04/12/07 05:41 PM

I did some quick tests to see the impact of INT and +Dam Gear.

Results (for a mage)

Every point of INT ~ .387% damage increase. At 250 INT your spell damage is almost double the base.

Every point of +Dam ~ .328% damage increase.

So every 10 INT ~ 11.7 Dam+

So every 10 INT ~ 11.7 +Spell Dam

I've revised it since it was unclear.

The damage increase as a percentage of the spell's base damage is consistent based on my testing.

E.g. Going from 5 INT to 105 INT will up your spell damage by 38.7%.

A 100 base dam firebolt would do ~ 138.
A 200 base dam firebolt would do ~ 276.

+Spell Dam gear only affects spells for that class.

Wearing +100 Dam to Fire Spells gear would give about 32.8% damage increase.

A 100 base dam firebolt would do ~ 133.
A 100 base dam icebolt would do ~ 100. (no effect)

I must have been unclear in my original post.

The total damage increase due to the spell varies, but the percentage increase is consistent relative to the base spell damage.

So if +10 INT increased your firebolt's max damage by 40 , every additional +10 INT will increase your firebolt's max damage by 40.

Spell DAM = Base DAM * (1+(INT*.387)+(ELEMENTAL DAM*.328))

This has been the case for all the spells I've tested so far.

The algorithm is slightly off.

Testing it shows that with a base of 10, adding 3 int doubles ( 200% as opposed to the actual 1.16% increase) the base.

Revised algorithm:
Damage = Base + ( Base * [ { (Int * .387) + ( ElementBonus * .328) } / 100 ]

Breakdown:
#1 Multiply int by 0.387
#2 Multiply the elemental bonus (fire, ice, shadow equipment) by 0.328
#3 Add #1 and #2 - this is the total damage percentage increase
#4 Divide #3 by 100
#5 Multiply #4 by Base - this is the actual dam increase
#6 Add #5 to Base - this is the total damage

Explanation:

This takes the percentages as integers (int*.387 and elebonus*.328) and turns them back into a proper percentage decimal, which can then be multiplied by the base to produce the damage increase, which is added to the base for the total damage.

(sorry for all of the braces if it's more confusing - I wanted to define it as exactly as possible)

Credit to DarkSunder for stats and original algorithm.

Meh, who cares about the technical mumbojumbo?
What newbies like me want to know is

+10 INT IS BETTER THAN +10 ELEMENTAL DMG

Right?

LOL, I just want to quote this to illustrate why people choose mages in games and contrast to the post in the fighters forum: why'd you pick fighter?

Here is an excerpt:

Sorry, I just thought that was funny. And, btw, thanks for the algo - it gives me ideas to experiment tonight!

Love the comparison. What does it say when I have both a mage and a fighter? Split Personality?
