Gear for the Fashionable Mage...
#19336 - 04/05/07 11:07 PM

G'Day Runners!

Tonight I started hunting in HDoL and also Dinged to 50. I've noticed that the mobs I'm now currently hunting are regenning very quickly compared to the normal dungeons. I'm looking for advice for gear directions. Currently from level 1-50 I've primarly been a Battle Mage in that I've selected mostly Str/End gear and placed most of my stat points into Int. In the early levels I put stats into End as well for survivability.

Here is my stats:

HP = 4898
Mana = 7690

Str: 209
Agi: 5
End: 216
Int: 308

Resists: Fire = 180, Ice = 127, Poison = 84, Shadow = 322, Divine = 190

I think I want to start swapping out some of my Def/End gear for more Int based gear. If the Int has some Str and/or End as well that is good too.

What I'm a bit skittish on is if I start to do this I think that my trips to the Graveyard will become far more frequent.

Am I doing the right thing here?

Also I grouped with YellowSnake (Fighter) tonight and the mobs I was attacking seem to take forever to kill when compared to the ones he was killing. Is this normal? Or is it mainly due to my current build?

Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance

Rhonen

Well for starters the reason why the mobs you were fighting took longer was because as you group the mobs get more difficult with each member of the group...so takeing on one beast by yourself in a group will be noticebly slower.

i would suggest not that much str and definitely more end...try to get end kinda close to int.

but i haven't played mage much so....

At 50 Id have had around 100 END,650 INT with some STR/INT gear. I ended up swapping out the STR/INT for full INT but I must stress I duo with a warrior.

I definately would not recommend soloing HDoL with the 2k HP, 400 so DEF that I had back then...though I had an endless supply of mana and even after the patch I have still only had to take a mana pot once or twice (19k mana pool).

I personally dont think you need to up your END, but you will know better than I about that and a Mage who regularly solo's would be able to have a better picture.

As for taking longer to kill mobs than the fighter, this is my own experience too but your relatively low INT will have been a contributing factor yes.

Paradoxically although our damage was reduced in the patch I have found that we (the fighter and I) are slightly more equal than we were before...it seems they didnt just nerf the PCs the NPCs got nerfed too and I am no longer a 2-shot kill for certain HDoL mobs if they get in melee range. (Coupled with an endless supply of health pots, this is yet another reason why I dont think you should add any more to END).

Rhonen, gratz on half century.

For a little perspective here's my stats at 96.

5/5/316/1107 7652/27048 dr/1847

resists 411/415/252/100/186

I realized I took more stat points in END below level 30 than I really wanted, about 40. The elemental resists were really hard to get used to back in December, so I bumped up my HP. I sure wish I had the firepower from those stat points now. I'd say you need to get your INT stat up 50-100 and the STR needs to lower.

As for gear: Depends on if you are solo or grouped more often. Solo you need a mix of high END/INT and armor with the highest def rating you can manage. I constantly switch stuff out. Grouped you can go with a more pure INT set of gear. Also you really need to be able to move, try to get armor with plus movement percentage.

Skill choice makes a difference too. The last two builds have made me change things around a lot.

Here's my current choice (l to r):

Ice Bolt/Acidic Blight/Gaseous Blast/Ring Of Fire/Shadow Resist/Dark Wizardry/Shadow Lightning

Experiment a little, you'll know very quickly if something doesn't work.

I have 320 int at level 27. Things drop really fast. Honestly The only time I wear Plate is on bosses like agrock.

Like, if you notice the cloth in this game has alot of +%movement speed. This is because your not supposed to stand and take the hits as a mage. I personally am a big fan of running into groups, aoeing, then stomping the mobs away followed by a "Lightning Kite" on the survivors.

Mage isn't a just stand their and auto attack class like fighter and ranger, it really requires you to move if you want to stay alive. And just wearing plate in dungeons is nerfing your damage so much.

On the other hand, mage gear in this game isn't as cool looking as the fighter gear. So, w/e.
