Bug in Soul Rend, butcher, dual wield damage
#18389 - 03/27/07 12:14 AM |
After spending 58000 on an upgrade to Soul Rend tonite I just about choked when I moused over to see the damage and found it reporting 217-502... about 5 minutes later the damage counter bumped up to 825-1914 (I have the skill in the left mouse button.. I'm getting these numbers by mousing over it) 5 minutes after that, with no fighting, no equipment changes it dropped to 604-1755, then 448-871 then moved back up to 825-1914 less than a minute afterwards. I'm going to presume this jumping damage is occurring in the dungeons as well, which would explain why I seem to hit very hard with soul rend at times, and barely scratch the exact same monster with it at others... I've noticed the same in butcher.. the explanation of the skill is 55% of attack rating and 85% of normal damage dealt with a chance of knockdown.. I've given up on using the skill because since the patch, 2 out of 3 hits with the skill (and this is with a knockdown.. enemy goes flying) does no damage at all. Absolutely nothing. The other 1/3 of the time you actually get a knockdown it does normal damage. Finally, I wanted to report a bug in the much maligned Dual Wield... after the patch I went and did an impromptu test, and granted, I need to test it a zillion times, as I was repeatedly informed in the game, I nevertheless think the data supports the problem. Using two weapons, damage 96-404 and 85-402, +65 total strength, +66 total DPS boost, both ludicrous speed, with 1 hand swivel arm action and the 20% boost from dual wield... I was killing a specific champion critter in HDoL in 5.81 seconds, and a hero critter in 11.64 seconds... Now, with a 2hander, slothful speed, 117-691, +42 strength, +30 total DPS boost with 2 hand swivel arm action, I killed the same champion critter (gotta love HDoL :P) in 3.54 seconds, and the hero one in 6.96. Barring an obscene string of luck with critical hits every swing, the dual wield should have been par with them walking into a blender... blizzard of damage that should have massively outstripped the 2hander.. even the weapons themselves are better.. more str, more dps, more high and low end damage, massively more attack speed (2hander should be about 1.875 swings per second, dual wield should be 3.48 swings per second EACH). My question at this point is where does the system break down? I think the 2nd weapon still isn't dealing damage properly.. I'd love to use dual wield, but IMO it's still broken :/ It'd be great if the devs could look at this and perhaps take a peek in the game as well.. the oddball damage on these three isn't a serious problem I guess, but a bit strange. I agree with your analogy on dual-wield. I had the same experience. With two ludicrous weapons, each with great damage, I should have been outdamaging my slothful 2h. Fact is, I wasn't. I did verify that my offhand weapon was doing damage, but it also appeared to only do damage every third swing or so. Of course, this is a little more difficult to test. One note - I tested with two ludicrous daggers (one of which was a rainbow) and two fast hammers. The daggers had the highest damage output in the char screen, but I was much more effective with the two slower hammers. Visually, the hammers also did more actual damage (meaning the numbers that were flying were higher than they were with the daggers). Part of this, I'm sure, is due to the fact that my minimum damage with the hammers was 100 points more, even though the max damage was less. That being said, I appeared to do higher level damage--in general-- with the hammers over the daggers (which should have been superior). One last thought - it 'appears' that I miss a lot more when dual wielding--especially with ludicrous-speed weapons--than when using 2h weapons. |

I suppose the easiest way to test would be 1 godly weapon, and one weak as possible one from Dew Valley, then turn the view damage thing on.. I'll have to give that a try soon and see what happens... And yes, for the record, after a reboot my soul rend is still doing odd things.. 3 damage changes in just under 10 minutes this morning, and all I was doing was idling in townston at the time... |

Are you making any changes to your equipped items? Did you have any buffs active that then ended during that time frame? Or are you literally just sitting there watching the numbers for Soul Rend change without doing anything and without having any buffs placed on your character? Any additional information would be very appreciated. I want to look into this issue pronto. Thanks. -------------------- MarkT Lead Designer |

I'm literally just sitting there in townston watching the numbers change up and down.. no buffs, no equipment changes, nothing at all.. the biggest jump was immediately after I purchased an upgrade to the skill.. that was the 200-500ish damage and I was a touch excited when I saw that :P Since then I've seen it do it more than 2 dozen times.. if I leave the mouse overtop of the skill there is no change. Moving it back and forth seems to spark the change in the damage reported. As I mentioned in my first post, I think it's doing it in the dungeon while I am fighting as well.. with the damage soul rend does when reported properly, I should at least see a normal enemy (i.e. poison whisker) take 1 or 2 pixels of damage.. instead I'll see them turn colour, indicating the skill is working, and take no damage at all, so I expect it's dealing that vastly lowered damage rating. The same happens to me with butcher on a regular basis. I can hit an enemy, knock it back and stun it, and deal NO damage.. not even 1 pixel from their health bar. |

Ok.. having actually taken the time to test Dual Wield, I'm very certain that the offhand weapon isn't hitting for anything at all.. I tried equipping a grey staff, 2-8 damage, ludicrous speed and then went and attacked a boss with it.. was getting really piddly hits around the 80-130 range with it (view damage turned on), which is in line with what my damage counter was reporting on the character sheet. I then went and put on a decent purple hammer in my first hand, and the piddly stick in the right... The hammer had a bit of str on it, and a much higher damage rating, bumping my reported damage up to 490-1350. I then went after the same boss... EVERY hit was over 500 damage, without exception. What I was seeing on the damage output was consistently high damage with a massive batch of Miss messages in behind. So I decided to go and try.. I played for a half hour in HDoL, and not once did I see my offhand weapon hit for anything.. every hit I dealt was between 500 and 3300 damage depending on my critical hit success... So the question is, what's up with dual wield? Any devs available to comment on this one? |

i'm definitely not a dev. but i can tell you dual wield is working several of us have tested it and all agree that it is. but you do seem to already have wierd issues considering your other problem |
