Skill cooldown...
#14618 - 02/08/07 08:24 AM

About the cooldown of skills when equiping them, I understand that that might be to prevent people from setting/unsetting them to get past the cooldown.

I think a more elegant solution to this would be for skills cooldown to be independent of whether or not they are active/equipped or whatever you call it. That way if i use retribution, for instance, swap it for another skill then change it back the time it spent unequipped counts as cooldown. It's more realistic that way, and I know there have been previous design choices made on that very basis.

That sounds pretty overpowered... what's to stop you from having all the skills and just cycling through them?

Cooldown should depend on int

Well, hopefully nothing! Other than the cumbersome UI involved in swaping skills.

If I have a skill it's cuz my char knows how to use it and if I choose to be a jack of all trades and somehow master the art of swapping skills midfight then I *should* be able to use *all* my skills on the mobs. God knows I paid for them!

I don't see how it's overpowered. Skills would retain their cooldown so you won't be able to use them more often. You'd just be able to swap them while they're in cooldown.

It would be overpowered because right now there's a cap on how many skills you can fire at once imposed by the limited hotkeys. If you are suddenly able to fire off shadow lightning from a distance, fire every AE attack skill as the mobs close, and pop all your resist powers and Retribution before switching over to butcher... well, I imagine that would bork up the balance vs bosses.

Guild Wars runs on a similar system. If you could fire off every single skill in that game by hotswitching, you'd be an unstoppable force of death. As it is, you can only switch in town. I know that's a bit facetious as an example, but I think the concept carries over.

Right, but you could use a lot more skills more often.

I don't see this happening much.

The UI for swaping skills is cumbersome enough to prevent this from being a big issue. By the time you swap one or two skills (at the most) mobs will have gotten to you, I don't care how fast you think you can click-drop.

But it's really pointless for me to continue to argue a point that is evidently unpopular... so boohoo for me

Nothing wrong with a little healthy discussion =) I do see your point about switching skills being tricky.

My suggestion would be to improve the UI responsiveness (which I have noticed too), not change game mechanics behavior.

I wouldnt mind a sort of skill system with skill points, that would make it the same as diablo 2 where sure you can have every skill but they will all be signifigantly weaker than using a few key skills.

How about a cooldown TIMER! ^.^
