Error Connecting to Server
vB post 134379 - 08/18/08 08:33 PM

These are getting really old. Took me 10 tries to log onto pvp server. Please fix.

Is it worth it to point out that if you always and consistently have these connection problems, maybe the issue is not on the server end?

Broadband connection, completely lag free on other 3 games on my pc always connects first time, all three firewalls set to allow each of the games and virus programs set to allow any connections from the port. I connect to the internet and start my search in 2 seconds. Tell me what I could possibly be doing wrong and I will fix it.

I would, but if I remember right, aren't you the one who doesn't have time to trouble shoot and who doesn't want to because he knows it's not on his end...?

If you were willing to troubleshoot, I would suggest taking down/disabling all three firewalls, and connect to the game. Disconnect. Enable one firewall then connect to the game. Disconnect. Reenable the next firewall, then connect to the game. Lather, rinse, repeat, and if it's not one of the firewalls, then start doing this with any other blocking software you have installed.

Time-consuming, but it is the simplest way of determining what it is you are doing wrong.

Waitaminit.... 3 firewalls all on the same PC?? Damn isn't that a bit of overkill... like wearing 3 trojans....

It's no wonder your having connection issues, with all the fancy maneuvering the packets have to do to get through 3 firewalls, I can see
why you'd be having issues

Try cutting back to 1 firewall ( and listing the 3 here) and see if you have better luck....

Even Microsoft recommends that you use only 1 Firewall....

<shakes head and submits post.........>

I don't know. I've seen people where three trojans would have been justified...

3 firewalls? Virus programs? Dude, no wonder you have problems.

As Cthulhu said, cut down to 1 of each and you will find your computer to be much, much faster and effective.
I would suggest for anti-virus, just go with Avast Antivirus or AVG Anti-Virus & Spyware Scanner. I said OR, not both.
For firewall, Comodo Firewall is still probably the better one.
They're all freeware.

I don't have a software firewall, other than the one in Vista. That in combination with the firewall built into my router gives me enough problems.

Just using Vista and router myself right now (although without any problems) but on XP that won't be enough and he must have a firewall.
I used Comodo on my Vista earlier and it worked great so it's probably just my laziness that I haven't installed it again.

On my Windows XP Computer I have this set-up: Windows Firewall plus the one in the router. Spywareblaster, Avira Antivir, Spybot S&D, plus lots of common sense and no teenagers allowed near it.

The Windows firewall is not a very good one in XP, as you say. It was hugely improved for Vista. Comodo has a very sharp learning curve, but is kickass once you get the hang of it. Easier to get to know but still good, is ZoneAlarm.

I understand you want to do a security overkill with a younger brother surfing on this computer, but installing several firewalls and antivirus programs won't make your computer any safer. They will conflict with each other, cause all sorts of problems, and you will end up being less safe. If you really are worried, this guide is very helpful if you want to learn more about keeping your system safe from nasties.

I use, on Vista:

SpyBot
SpySweeper
Windows Defender
Norton 360 (almost everything on)
*Disabled* Windows Firewall

and a Linksys router as first line of defense firewall.

I used the same setup with XP only I used Norton System Works (most of it disabled).

Grab a parental type "web nanny" piece of software and knock out p0rn sites...that's half the battle right there.

I don't think that it is the firewall... I've also been having difficulty logging on to my world of choice. Several times I have needed to play on w8 if I was to play at all. I'm just not getting through!

I have already posted a topic about this. It's completely random. Sometimes it lets me through from the first shot and sometimes it makes me tap Enter for over 20 times (seriously) to the point where I want to smash my head into the monitor. It's really inconvenient when I tell someone I'll go switch to one of my other chars...

I count you lucky yesterday I tried for two hours straight and couldn't get on any server. What is funny is that I've been playing since Dec. 2007 with the same set up and this is the first time I've had any problems. I even tried with all firewalls taken down, so that is not the problem. I like to play, so this is very discouraging.

Error connecting
vB post 136311 - 08/31/08 06:35 AM

Hi there.
I'm a new player, started playing about August 22nd.
I've managed to play for two days, with my firewall and all my settings unchanged and no problems at all! The game is extremely fun and I've even managed to get to level 7.
However, from the third day onwards, I can't even connect.
I've tried disabling everything but my internet connection and zilch.
In the rare occasions when I managed to actually reach the world list, it can go into the little queque screen forever.
In the even rarer occasions the game manages to actually go into a world, it takes a lot of time for my character to show up, for the game to load, and when it finally loads, I can't move, and everyone around me is stuck. I've waited for an hour and nothing.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game with no success, tweaked setting, tried a lot of different things and I just can't get this game to connect and stay stable like my first two days.

This game is a lot of fun, I even thought of paying, but its no use if I can't play!

Wow, heh...a common problem a lot of us are having, but on a much grander scale. Really, I'm no expert and all I can tell you is a pretty generalized speculation; it must be a connection issue. Be patient and some of the more technologically inclined forum members will help you out.
