Help a noob fighter out here
#56569 - 04/30/08 06:24 PM

I'm real brand new, not just to this game, but online games in general. I just recently got broadband; before I had 56k for years. I started playing this game and I really seem to enjoy it, but I see that either I'm doing something wrong or I just don't know how to play this game. Can anybody give me any suggestions or advice on how to better my character, in PvE and PvP. I keep getting my butt kicked pretty badly in PvP by people not even half my level. Again, any help will be greatly appreciated. Where to level up, get good weapons, etc. Also, if I die in HDoL, do I die for good and have to start from scratch? Thank you for your time.

Hi, MonroeX! Welcome to Dungeon Runners!

I don't have all the answers for you--I'm not that great a PvPer in DR, I'm sorry to say, but I will address a few of your questions.

You may not be as bad as you think you are...you may simply have not been matched up as well as you could have been. For the next update, we're doing some skill balancing, PvP balancing, and PvP matchmaking improvements. You can check out the related notes here. (Side note: I'm an instant fan of Dark Conniption!)

You asked "Also, if I die in HDoL, do I die for good and have to start from scratch?" No, your characters never permanently die. If you die in HDoL, you'll simply get resurrection sickness that will reduce your character's combat capability for a short while.

Hey Sannio, thanks for the welcome and reply. I appreciate your help. Do you know when the new update will be released? Also if anyone else has comments or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks again.

As of this evening it's on our public test server, so we think it's good enough to put out but first we're gathering player feedback on it. Only Stephen can really put a time on it, but it's definitely going to be live "soon."

Sounds like you need a sponsor for "Big Runner/Little Runner" to help you out! This is a great opportunity to make my idea work, yay! Sadly, and regrettably, I cannot personally do it, but maybe someone who reads this post will jump up and put on one of those yellow shirts with the word "BIG DR" printed on it...

::hands noob another yellow shirt with the words "lil' dr" printed on it:: lol... You'll be alright, it just takes practice like everything.

As for the update, its on the PTS now, so it should hopefully be out in a week or so (hopefully..we seem to have a lot of hiccups here at DR - it's part of the stigma of being a runner' )

1: Get Average BMI from ranger skill trainer.
::takes BIG DR shirt and puts it on although he's the same lvl as MonoroeX::

You can always respec and try another build out with mage or ranger. Or just find what suits you mate.

I have beaten u b4 . Anyway, drop cleave, and get soulrend. Get Fear of Gosh, get a speed skill, and max chill bill with globe and twigs. If you want, drop butcher is u like. Also, have a full suit of mage gear for the runners.

That isn't saying much, everyone beats me. Once I hit level 40 I'll probably re-enter PvP and try again. I'll try out all of your suggestions, guys. I'm pretty content with being a fighter, and I feel that it is the best class for a newbie to start out as. Maybe I'll try to make a hybrid. Fighter and Mage sounds good. We'll see. Thanks for all the help. If anyone else can offer up some more, by all means do so.

Meh. I kept reconfiguring my character over and over and over. I spent about 800,000 in gold doing so, just trying out new things. I think I'll just stick to being a fighter for now. To hell with PvP. Until the new patch comes out, I probably won't try it again anytime soon. It's just way too unfair. I just need to find more rainbow items and purple items and I'll be set. I try to keep my level high before I move onto a new area. I'm just starting the Mutanous Malaise and I'm at level 40. I usually go to the HDoL by myself to level up. I usually can't find anyone around my level to go in with me. So, again, thanks to everyone for the suggestions. If you have some to help my character become a better fighter, let me know.

At lvl 40, do embercore. Run lvls where there is RB Sally (lvl 3 and 5).

FYI: the higher your lvl, the less hp u get in PvP, but more power. No (or 1-3) rbs at high lvl = getting pwned by lvl 12 with all yellows (trust me on this one)

Le me get this right, I should repeat certain levels until Rainbow Sally appears? Rainbow Sally is a merchant, right? And does she appear on every level 3 and 5 of every dungeon, or certain ones, or beginning with embercore, or what? And I can't do Embercore yet because I haven't reached the Embercore Portal yet.

Sally is a merchant yes. She is a random spawn that shows up on levels 3 and pretty sure still level 5. She will not appear everytime you run the level. I am not sure the percentages anymore.

But when does she start showing up? Does it start with Embercore, or does she show up on lower-level dungeons like Frump's Misfortune or The Widower's Nest?

Also, for Sam or Sally, if you run the dungeon on insane you have a better chance of getting Rainbow versions of them, (they sell rainbow, or mythic items). On normal, you can find them but they usually sell purples.

Not sure about this one. News to me if that is the case. I cant comment fully on it though b/c I havent been running as much though. In the past I have never had a problem finding rainbow Sally on normal. Would need more of a confirmation on that one.

Ditto.

Also, Sally 'seems' to appear more often in the higher lvl dungeons (Embercore and up), but I can't confirm that either.

I set my difficulty level to insane and it hasn't increased the chance of getting rb's at all. I haven't gotten any. It's just easier for me to die, but I do get a lot more items dropped, though they're all gray, blue, green, and yellow.

Higher difficulties don't mean that more of your drops will be rb's. Higher difficulties increase drop rates (as you know), and the more drops you get, the more chances there are of a drop being a rb.

Ok for your level i suggest Malaise, when I was grinding Mayah from 40-46 for pvp, I got like 3 rbs running Malaise on normal doing quests and what not.

Rainbow sally only starts appearing in Embercore and higher level dungeons, and yes the frequency of her appearing increases a little bit in higher level dungeons.

Difficulty doesn't effect rb sally appearing.

Now, during normal gameplay, just grinding levels, I don't get very many rbs, Maybe 10-15 total with all my toons, not each. The only surefire way to get rbs is to farm with a full group. Rotgut is best for 55 and lower, with a full group on insane you've got a pretty good chance of getting one, about 1 in 25ish. Solo on normal you have a 1 in 300 chance of an rb dropping from a boss, and 1 in 500 from one coming from a chest. With a full group on insane the chance goes up quite a bit. So having 5 players each with 1 in 25 chance to get rb, there is a 1 in 5 chance of an rb drop as a whole.

Speaking of getting rbs on normal, I got like 4 in less than 4 hours in HDOL. Also, RB Sally restocks her items after some time they are bought. It's wise to find her, invite random people from world to buy from her, and wait for items to restock to your likings (is it a word?). Thats the way if you just want RBs. Also, you might want a little more cash than you currently have.

My apologies to all for issuing inaccurate, poorly worded information.

In my experience, it seems that when I am on normal difficulty, I find purple Sam and Sally fairly easy. I have only found rainbow versions of them on insane. That has been my experience though and not fact. Again, I am sorry for portraying it as anything other than that.

In my experience, and talking to long time sally hunting veterans, never, the she only appears in Embercore and higher.

I suppose it is possible for her to appear in lower level dungeons with rbs, but i've never ever seen or heard of it.

The lowest level she appears in at all, is Algors Terrordome, lowest i've seen her is Verigrims Vexation. As i said, the likelihood for her appearing increases a bit with dungeon level. SO, its much less likely to even see her in algors than embercore. So the rb version is even more unlikely.

After build 110 went live, someone logged around 400 sally runs in Rats(lvl 75+ dungeon). And only found Sally with rainbows 9 times. See here at thetownstons.com. If you want to try looking for sally outside of the 40+ dungeons, go for it, but you probably wont find anything.

I suggest you get to embercore and start running lvl 3, you'll probably find an rb or two from drops before you find sally. PM me in game if you haven't been able to get to embercore portal, and i'll get you the obe.

Scary when I agree with WH ... I know you can find her lower.

I think it is more of when people search her out. Most dont have the cash when in algor ect to hunt for her. By the time you get to embercore there is plenty of spare cash to blow on rbs

Sally and sam can both be found down to algor's as far as I've even known. I've found them both on level 4, and 6 (respectively) in algors with Swiper when she was in level range for that dungeon. If that has changed in patches/updates, it wasnt mentioned (I went and checked patch notes real quick). I think its just that most people dont go "sally hunting" at level 20, lol. You ain't got the cash, nor the "time" to bother wasting. Its around 50's or so (i.e. embercore level minded) when running sally seems to become useful and economical.

Raising your difficulty has nothing to do with finding her - I only "look" for her on normal, and when I do go looking I usually find her at least once a night (like Dark usually does it seems too), BUT it is usually on embercore 3. BUT (lol) the only reason I started looking there in the first place is because it used to be THE place to supposedly find her, and it still seems that way for some unknown reason.

Maybe her "fence" lives down there? I dunno...

I never said that they couldn't be found at all, only that they don't sell rbs in the lower dungeon, and I said that it could be possible that they could. But i've never seen them with rbs in anything lower than Embercore. Everytime i hear of sally and its in M Malaise, or Widowers, its always regular sally.

I'd love to be proven wrong tho, but I'm not spending all my time searching for very little reward, and a 1 in 50 chance for her to appear doesn't really appeal to me. I don't get to spend much time on these days so I try to be as productive as possible when I do get time.

Maybe i'll do some of my grinding with Mayah in MM until she hits lvl 55(which will take longer due to reduced xp rates after lvl 50) just to see if its possible so we can squash the debate.

I finally made it to Embercore level 3 and I got my gold up. I ran it twice and she hasn't shown up, so I guess I just have to keep resetting the instances until she does. I am assuming RB Sally sells items for King's Coins and not gold coins, right? I have over 2 million in gold and over 400 in King's Coins. Also, does it matter what world you're on for her to appear? Ever since I became a member, I have been playing on World 2. However, I've noticed that I get disconnected a lot when in World 2. If I go to another world, I'm fine.

Another thing I was wondering about. World 2 is specifically for members, I get that. But is there any significances of being in World 2, or not really. I was just wondering as it is being for members only, if it was better in some way, or maybe experience is gained quicker in it, or something.

There are 3 versions of Sally: regular Sally (sells yellows and purps for gold), KC Sally (sells KC's for gold), and the coveted Rainbow Sally (sells mythics for gold).

RB Sam is the one who sells mythics for kc's. His prices range from something like 100kc to 200+ kc, so you might want to keep accumulating those coins. A regular Sam is more common, and he sells purps for a much lower KC price.

I don't know why you would be getting disconnected in w2 as opposed to any other world, but you might want to post in the Bugs/Tech Issues Forum or start a support ticket at NCsupport.

There are no benefits to playing in w2 other than avoiding the many nonmem beggars and spammers, which is benefit enough IMO.

I converted my fighter over to a mage, and I must say that I am glad that I did. My mage is much stronger than my fighter was and it makes the game a lot easier. I guess now that I am a mage, this topic is in the wrong section.

Rainbow Sally. What must I do to get to her? I spent almost six hours replaying Embercore Level 3 over and over and over...I found regular Sally three times and King's Coins Sally once, but now Rainbow Sally. In six hours, not once! Am I too low of a level or something?

I have never found her on my own - only when someone else did and announced on market chat.
By the way, that is the correct behavior if you do find her. Drop a waypoint compass and announce it.

I have found RB Sam on Embercore 7 (I think) several times though.
It is also customary to tip your guide with one RB if you can afford it.

I used to find Rainbow Sally every four runs in Embercore 3. I'm not sure if it was a bug and has been fixed, but she used to be ridiculously common (and cheap) back then.

Yeah she was bugged Im pretty sure. Also pretty sure that was fixed last build. I know it is one of the reasons that people think she cant be found on dungeons before Embercore. She was way to easy to find for awhile on that level.

I read somewhere that RB Sally won't appear passed Shadow's Embrace. Is this true, or does she appear in Balzack's Burrow and Ratsputins Gulag? And if she does, will I have a better chance of finding her in those upper levels? In Embercore Level 3, I spent six hours one night, then almost four hours another night looking for her. Not once did I find RB Sally. After that, I said the hell with it and proceeded to the next level. Maybe it depends on what world you're in? I always play the Members Only World 2, unless I feel like losing in PvP, then I'm in World 5 I think it is.

She appears in every dungeon from Algor to Ratsputin.

Regular sally may be there every time ... but not rainbow sally

This was patch 100, though. Since 110 went live, that "everytime" thing was no more.

When searching for Sally, it doesn't matter if you're member or non, playing on normal or insane, playing in w1 vs. w4/w7/w2/etc.
